People who hang out washing in heavy rain

Why do people insist on putting out washing when having heavy rain?

If out all day, don’t do it. If in, take it in as soon as it rains!

Washing stinks when out in the rain. Or when is stuck in the washing machine - as parents’ washing machine on Friday. It didn’t drain - the pump has gone. I took the load home with me and washed it as stank. Not strong, but enough to feel conscious about it.

I leave things out if it rains, unless it's urgent that it dries. It'll dry once the rain stops. And no, it doesn't stink at all because the air keeps it fresh; when it's finally dry it smells just as lovely as it would've done without the rain. But we're in a very windy spot.

Thanks for that info !

I lived in Manchester for 40 years and moved further southeast about 20 years ago. The first thing I told my Manchester friends was that I could peg washing out from February - September and it didn’t get rained on!

MassiveOvaryaction · 08/06/2025 13:42

Meh. Why do you let it bother you op? Unless maybe someone is coming over, kidnapping your laundry and hanging it out in the rain?

Objectionhearsayspeculation · 08/06/2025 13:48

Because they have no other way to dry clothes and with a stiff breeze they will be dry quickly between the showers or if not when they rain stops. It doesn’t stink in the rain, it does however stink left in the washing machine. It seems unlikely (albeit not impossible) to rain forever.

stayathomer · 08/06/2025 14:51

Noshadelamp

it possibly just knocks it off? Never had to wipe anything here anyhoo

rosemarble · 08/06/2025 20:02

It was meant to rain while I was out today so I brought all the washing in. It had only been out for about an hour - good wind.
It did not rain. It could have stayed out.

THIS is why so much washing is out in the rain - our weather forecasts stink!

JohnTheRevelator · 08/06/2025 20:20

I've never seen or heard of anyone doing this.

Maybe they hang washing out and then go to work. I can't imagine anyone does it on purpose.

My neighbour used to hang theirs out regardless. During bouts of crap weather the same clothes would be out there all week 😂

asrl78 · 09/06/2025 18:36

Everyone knows that if you don't like the weather, you can change it by doing activities or wearing clothes that are appropriate to the weather you want.

For example, if you don't want it rain, put your washing out, the weather will avoid raining over your house until you bring your washing in.

If the summer weather is cold and claggy, because of a screaming north-westerly with temperatures at least five degrees below average, put your shorts and T-shirt on. That will magically re-align the weather patterns to bring southerly winds with 25+C temperatures and beautiful blue skies. If you feel cold, just whack the heating on, especially if someone else is paying the bill.

MellersSmellers · 09/06/2025 18:53

....and why do you care. What difference does it make to you?

CrispieCake · 09/06/2025 19:20

Let not the perfect be the enemy of the good. Unlike many on here, perhaps, I live in a small house without a dedicated laundry room and separate tumble dryer. So by the time I've got a few loads building up or needing drying, half my (small) kitchen is submerged in damp or dirty clothes. So if the weather is mixed, out the laundry goes as an improvement to having it in the house. An extended wet spell sees us taking loads to the corner launderette to dry in their large machines.

GoldOP · 09/06/2025 19:24

My neighbours don’t peg it out in rain but they do peg it out on days when rain is imminent and then leave it out for days when it’s dried and been rained on again. It does puzzle me as it’s not difficult to check the forecast and they’re in and must know its getting rained on.
Doubt very much rain makes it smell tho!

Anotherparkingthread · 09/06/2025 19:34

Alright I'll admit it. I'm the neighbour who leaves the laundry out in all weather.

I put some out today and I know full well it's going to rain tonight. If I remember to bring it in it's 50 / 50. If it gets rained on both me and the laundry will live, I have never considered this something to stress about, I have definitely never considered this might be something for my neighbours to stress about 😂

If it needs washing again I'll wash it again?

August1980 · 09/06/2025 19:39

Well! If it’s me you are talking about, the sun was out when I hung it up. It rained when I was out. Then I had to bath and pop baby down before I went out in the rain to get my washing in for another wash! Stop being so judgmental.

flowerpink · 09/06/2025 19:51

When it's raining I put it on a clothes horse with a rain cover, it does the job, I hate it in the house and I don't have a dryer!

Mrsgreen100 · 09/06/2025 21:14

If my washing is on the line and it happens to rain and I’ve missed it or been out, I love it. It smells delicious when it’s dry and so much easier to iron and all the crappy chemicals in Brother our laundry machines are the washed away.

emanresu3 · 09/06/2025 21:29

I do my washing rain or shine when the electricity is half price 11-4 week-ends and never hang wet washing indoors. Been rained on and never stunk

katepilar · 09/06/2025 21:58

The pollen situation will vary greatly depending on where you live and what grows in the neighbourhood as well as on what individual pollen one is allergic to.

aster10 · 09/06/2025 21:59

Ah, mumsnet laundry threads! It has to be because their laundry was darked on and spiders rubbed their willies on it! How else can you wash it all off!

ThreePointOneFourOneFiveNine · 09/06/2025 22:01

Why do you have an opinion on what other people do with their washing? I’m genuinely baffled!

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 09/06/2025 22:44

Never heard of actually going out in pouring rain to hang laundry.

I admire their optimism though, glass always half full.

Someonelookedatmypostinghistorysoichanged · 10/06/2025 06:55

Why do you care. What does it matter to you and rained on washing does not smell.

CrispEater2000 · 10/06/2025 08:04

Sometimes I get caught out but if it starts raining I don't rush back and get it all in. The way the weather is at the minute it soon clears up and dries out anyway. It doesn't smell either, it's just rain not actually cats and dogs.

I think she cares because where she lives washing smells bad if left out in the rain. If that's the case then it would be strange to actively peg it out when raining. I think it would only be the case if say it was dry, got rained on, then didn't dry properly, and went a bit mouldy?

She has no idea if it smells, she is extrapolating because her Mum’s manky washing in a machine that wouldn’t drain smelled. She doesn’t hang her washing out anyway.

I don’t know where in earth she’s finding smelly rain, but it isn’t a real thing. Damp washing that isn’t able to dry will get musty. That isn’t the case for washing that is merely rained on.
