People who hang out washing in heavy rain

Why do people insist on putting out washing when having heavy rain?

If out all day, don’t do it. If in, take it in as soon as it rains!

Washing stinks when out in the rain. Or when is stuck in the washing machine - as parents’ washing machine on Friday. It didn’t drain - the pump has gone. I took the load home with me and washed it as stank. Not strong, but enough to feel conscious about it.

It doesn't make it smell. If the rain is passing over I'd rather it was on the line blowing the creases out than scrunched up in the machine. It'll just take longer to dry.

I wouldn't hang out towels in the rain though, the weight of the water would break the washing line.

Maybe they hang washing out and then go to work. I can't imagine anyone does it on purpose.

This. Rain doesn't make it stink anyway. It only stinks if you leave it in the washing machine because it's a confined space.

They dump clean washing on the ground?

Yup. They used to leave it in a bag but now it just goes straight in the ground. It makes no sense.

EleanorReally · 08/06/2025 08:06

i dont have a heated airer or a tumble drier
summer rain means wet washing

PurpleYarnivore · 08/06/2025 08:06

The family opposite me leave their washing on the line for days , it’s often had two dry days ( so must be dry) then been rained on , dried out again, rained on … I don’t spend ages studying their washing but my bedroom window looks directly over their garden so it’s hard not to see and wonder the logic !

Previous NDN had washing out for a week! Had rain, snow, sleet on it

This is me. If I’ve missed getting the washing in and it’s got rained on then I’ll leave it until it’s fully dry or I have time to redo it.

Life’s too short to worry about it.

Bloody hell.

You’re overthinking it. There’s no logic, they simply forgot to get it in. Other priorities. Life happens.

katepilar · 08/06/2025 08:18

Once the washing gets rained on what do you suggest to do? Its probably easier to leave it where it is and let it dry once the sun is out.

What I never understood though why the houses in the UK dont have balconies or other places to dry the washing when it rains so often.

Washing stinks when out in the rain.’ No it doesn’t. Not in my garden. Where do you live that has smelly rain then?

If your washing is left in the rain all day, yes, it stinks. You might be nose-blind to it.

No it doesn’t.

I would assume that usually, but I work from home and tho both men are at work al day , both women are at home all day.

Because there's nothing better for the wellbeing standing out there in a downpour, wrestling with damp sheets, knowing that before long, they'll be soaked through. It's an absolute triumph of nature against the 1200 spin, and good for the soul. I've a load ready as we speak and am watching the forecast avidly.

BallerinaRadio · 08/06/2025 08:20

Fair play for getting 4 pages out of this, there really can't be anything else to do on a Sunday morning 😂

SmellyNelliey · 08/06/2025 08:22

I've had mine out all week neighbours properly think I've lost my mind, but being 30weeks pregnant and poorly I've just not brought it in 😂

Sally2791 · 08/06/2025 08:23

Mine goes out whatever the weather is. It’ll get dry eventually

Are Sunday mornings always this exhilarating on here?

Between this and the thread about the sign in the cafe and mentioning it in an otherwise positive review, it’s made my Sunday and I’ve only been awake 5 minutes!

JoshLymanSwagger · 08/06/2025 08:32

You'll all be glad to know that my first load is on it's final spin, then it's going in the TD. I've hoovered downstairs, now heading upstairs to make the beds and hoover up there.

Then there's cleaning the kitchen and lunch.

Such an exciting life...

Happy sunday everyone. Brew

I'm not nose blind. Washing out on the line, pegged out properly does not stink. Only washing that's hung out badly so it can't dry stinks.

You don't have an option in Manchester it's always effing raining 🙄

👋 waves to fellow Manc , it really couldn't make its mind up yesterday could it. It looks like it might be better today.

@Klonc yesterday I put my washing out when it was raining lightly because there was a mix of sunshine and showers pretty much all day it's still out there now so it got darked on as well ! 😲

Why do you monitor other people's washing lines so much ?

Yes washing left in the machine will smell but washing left on the line in the rain won't

IOnlyWantSexMoneyPowerAndRevenge · 08/06/2025 08:48

I don't put it out in the rain but if it is out and it starts to rain heavily before I notice, then I don't rush to bring it in. Its soaking wet by then so why do I need to get wet too?

If it gets lightly rained on eg if Im at work but its goes sunny again then Ill just leave it on the line to dry. Sometimes more than once.

I have been known to put my washing out at night if I wont have time before work the next day and its a dry night and a good forecast.

I also sometimes completely forget to bring the washing in at night.

Im more likely to get smelly washing drying indoors tbh. We have "clean" rain though. I can imagine if you live in the middle of a city etc that if your clothes get rained on, they will need rewashing.

We don't have a tumble drier which probably influences my decision quite a lot! 🤣

TanyaMcQuoidHunt · 08/06/2025 08:50

Who on earth does this? I get putting it out and then forgetting about it or going out and not being able to bring it back in again, but do people seriously put their washing out in heavy rain?

IOnlyWantSexMoneyPowerAndRevenge · 08/06/2025 08:54

I know coats can sometimes smell after being in the rain (eg wool) but they are generally fine after the dry.

Do you wash / dry clean your coat everytime you get rained on?

Or do you avoid the rain like The Wicked Witch of The West?

MyDeftDuck · 08/06/2025 08:56

stayathomer · 08/06/2025 06:56

The people with hayfever, have you tried putting it in the drier for twenty minutes after it comes in? We started and it seems to get rid of it for me and my sons (the doctor recommended it)

This.
I do this too…….wouldnt dream of drying all the laundry in the tumble dryer if it can go out on the line………think of the impact on energy bills! And I think it is lazy to not bother hanging laundry outside.
I have asthma and hay fever season is purgatory for me as the pollen makes me very short of breath.

MyDeftDuck · 08/06/2025 08:59

And FWIW……years ago we used to call out to the neighbours ‘ popping to town, can you bring my washing in if it comes on to rain please?’

Coffeeteasugar · 08/06/2025 09:03

Rain on towels makes them softer - I don’t get the science behind it but it always seems to work!
