To not agree with David Beckham being knighted

Those two are so full of their own self importance already. A knighthood will make them even worse. Absolute publicity seeking pains. They've been angling for this for years.

Lady V! She’s a real ladeee!

Does she actually design the clothes?

I saw something on television years ago, where she was shown in her works studio. She will, of course, have a team. But it did look like she was very hands on with the design of her clothes, cut, and materials, etc. She is an intelligent woman, who knows what looks good on her frame, and there are plenty of people with money, who wear her clothes.

romatheroamer · 06/06/2025 15:46

Rather him than some of the awful Tories Boris knighted simply because they'd supported him.

Instrumental? You mean he turned up in Singapore for a few days to add a bit of celebrity to what was already a great bid. Lord Coe oversaw the whole Olympic Games planning for several years in return for his title (and he was paid to do the role too).

Okey dokey. It was rather more than that but never mind.

Sure. It doesn’t matter what they have done or what their achievements might be, no matter who they are. But if it makes him big headed then he shouldn’t be give one. Perhaps test the water? Give him a knighthood then if he looks a bit smug later, or mentions it, then strip him of the award.

Many charity works and work on the Olympic committee are what he has done to deserve it.

Bu the fact people are querying 'why' shows the message isn't getting out, is it?

Which charities?

and why does he need to advertise booze and Cola/Pepsi? Both known to be counterproductive for health.

Kings Trust for one. UNICEF for over 20 years including 7 Fund. Malaria No More.

The fact that people need to ask is actually good because he isn't doing it in your face for publicity like some feel the need to do but actually for the charities he works for.

Well, the fact we have to ask shows it's not getting the PR it should. The King's Trust is always needing publicity so whoever does the PR isn't doing a good job.

Charities only thrive if more and more people support them. Being 'quiet' isn't helping.

You had a google did you to update the charities? :)
Proves my point that most people -and you- don't know.

Or people choose to ignore it because they don't like him. Anyway as a UNICEF ambassador for over 20 years too and working I was well aware that he was doing such work. It's on other people if they aren't widely read or not in third sector work.

What an odd attitude you have.

The whole point of using slebs or the Royal Family as ambassadors for charities is to promote them and raise awareness.

Lavendersong · 06/06/2025 16:05

He’s a genuinely kind and caring person.

He deserves his Knighthood

Spirallingdownwards · 06/06/2025 16:07

@LittleHouseOnThePrarie 😂I did indeed Google but to check which Unicef section he was involved with but was well aware he was involved with Unicef as is Geri Horner, but again wouldn't know which section without checking.

In any event there is no disputing he does a lot of charity work which is why he has received the honours which personally I think he is deserving of.

Just because you aren't aware doesn't mean millions of others aren't. You are the one with the strange attitude.

Boomer55 · 06/06/2025 16:13

The honours system so degraded now, that I couldn’t give a toss. 🤷‍♀️

gerispringer · 06/06/2025 16:13

Good for him. Well overdue. Lots get gongs for much less.

Todayisaday · 06/06/2025 16:24

Personally, I really couldn't give a flying fuck😂

WitchesCauldron · 06/06/2025 13:44

Never heard of his work with Unicef- that speaks volumes. Heard a lot more about his idiotic sons tho...

He's been a Goodwill Ambassador for them for over 20 years , raising realisation on issues for vulnerable children .

Words · 06/06/2025 17:26

What does 'raising realisation for vulnerable children' actually mean?

What did he do? How many ? where? Why? How specifically was his own contribution assessed?

Nanny0gg · 06/06/2025 17:43

MeridianB · 06/06/2025 13:49

This. And the Qatari element was grim, although the King has just hosted their ruler so clearly they are on the same page with that. But how Beckham squares that with Unicef is odd.

Many don't deserve it, including him.

The king doesn't get much say in who he hosts

Which is why Trump is due to come over

And I thing the fact that so many DON'T know about his charity work makes him more deserving of it

Funnywonder · 06/06/2025 17:51

What about all the people behind the scenes of his charity work? The ones who do the ACTUAL work? Are they getting knighted too? Being ‘an ambassador for’ always strikes me as an easy way to look altruistic.

Disclaimer: I think the honours system is a load of old bollocks and should be scrapped.

Plenty of kind and caring people around! The bar for Knighthood should be much higher.

BeNiceWhenItsFinished · 06/06/2025 20:22

Genevieva · 06/06/2025 13:16

People with lesser achievements receive knighthoods without controversy.

Quite.

Reliablesource · 06/06/2025 20:51

I don’t agree with honours being given to sportspeople/actors/musicians and the like. All of whom choose those careers for their own benefit, not to do a public service, and many of whom then make a great living and receive all sorts of accolades, and certainly don’t deserve a national honour for it.

I would possibly concede an exception for an Olympian who has won multiple gold medals, which is a truly extraordinary achievement. But the government hands these honours out willy-nilly these days.

Beckham’s achievements as a footballer were minor compared to many others. He has done very well on the back of a mediocre football career, low intellect and being married to a Spice Girl. His face is his fortune 🤷🏻‍♀️

Knighthoods/Damehoods should be reserved for unsung heroes, like scientists and doctors making medical breakthroughs, and people who have selflessly devoted their lives to public service.

Zanatdy · 06/06/2025 20:57

I think he deserves it. He is pretty harmless and if we are going to give them to sports people then he’s as good as anyone else. I think really they should be reserved for people like Alan Bates.

Mapletreelane · 06/06/2025 22:54

I'd have knighted him purely for that free kick against Greece in 2000.

Whatever you think about the Beckhams, I really admire him for how he responded at the vitriol and hate aimed at him.after he was sent off in 98 against Argentina. The reaction was disgraceful but he got his head down and worked his football socks off and ended up as England captain.
