To not agree with David Beckham being knighted

Those two are so full of their own self importance already. A knighthood will make them even worse. Absolute publicity seeking pains. They've been angling for this for years.

I was genuinely angry when I heard on the news he'd been given the knighthood he's been whining after for goodness knows how many years

What with that and the Trump / Musk fallout drama it's just another thing to add to the feeling we are living in a blooming soap opera and there is no escape.

I'm really glad I don't have too many more years left to live.

He’s helped a lot of charities and young people. If you don’t like him/ people getting this just ignore

Claiming flight costs etc from charity funds when you’re a multimillionaire. How very selfless.

Their own children don’t exactly reflect that, do they?

A feud has broken out in their family. Most people have something.like that going on from time to time. It isn't right to attack David and Victoria through their family. I.hate the way the Press blow it up and make it worse. And how people seize the gossip and think it nullifies all achievements.

MyKingdomForACat · 06/06/2025 14:28

Good luck to him. He’s always come across as a perfectly nice chap

He's played for his country, done a lot for the British Olympic group, no doubt does much other good work that we don't know about.
She's talentless but made lots of money because people buy her stuff ... not sure why, wannabes likely.

She is not talent less. She cannot sing, but that is another thing altogether. She has been successful with her fashion label, and knows how to dress to flatter what she has. Her eye for fashion, and tailoring has made her a fortune, and should not be overlooked.

PonkyPonky · 06/06/2025 14:30

We don’t advocate for home grown talent in this country enough. Our premiere league is more foreign players than English. That’s fine but we should be really proud of the few that did well at football or any sport at international level. He’s a great ambassador for grass roots as well which does so much good for young people. That being said, if he’s a tax evader then that should be automatic disqualification imo. But I don’t know the ins and outs of his tax affairs. I’d like to think that’s checked before handing out knighthoods

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 06/06/2025 14:31

@Summertimealready reading your post reminded me of the leaked emails that came out years ago when he wasn't offered one.

https://www.edinburghlive.co.uk/news/uk-world-news/david-beckhams-leaked-emails-full-30684747

However, amidst the controversy surrounding his absence from the Honours list in 2014, Football Leaks—essentially the sports world's equivalent to Wikileaks—disclosed emails said to be Beckham's, wherein he furiously slated the committee as a 'bunch of c*s' and dismissed the honours system as a "f**king joke".

He reportedly vented: "I expected nothing less... Who decides on the honours? It's a disgrace to be honest and if I was American I would of got something like this 10 years ago... It's ped me off those old unappreciative cs.

He is also said to have remarked bitterly, "Unless it's a knighthood fk off". Beckham supposedly questioned Katherine Jenkins' OBE, scoffing at her for, "singing at the rugby and going to see the troops plus taking coke. F**king joke".

David Beckham's leaked emails in full as he's snubbed for knighthood again

David Beckham has been desperate for a knighthood for years and was said to be 'fuming' after being snubbed in 2014 - while Katherine Jenkins was awarded an OBE despite his fury

Automatic disqualification. Have you seen some of the past knighthoods 😂

Pedallleur · 06/06/2025 14:32

Golden couple who have been successful. his face is known all over the world. Better him than some time served Civil Servant or rees-Mogg who got his in 2023 for???

LunaDeBallona · 06/06/2025 14:33

What have you done for your country compared to him?
He had a long football career, representing England over 100 times. He was also captain.
He worked hard with Prince William to secure the London Olympics 2012. All his own time, his own expense.
He works for UNICEF
He and Victoria set up a charity/foundation to help disabled children years ago which they give money and time to.
He lives here.
He pays his taxes here.
He supports and gives time to grass roots sports.
He has been appointed a representative of the Kings foundation.
He LOVES his country which is more than the likes of ‘Sir’Keir and ‘Sir’Sadiq Kahn.
Do you complain when civil servants get awards just for doing their well paid job??(see the two above).
If he was that ‘full of his own self importance’ he wouldn’t have queued for 12 hrs to pay his respects to the late Queen, or do ‘normal’ things like go for pie and mash/do his own cooking.
I know that nobody is universally liked but do people really have to be so mean about him and his wife? Both self made, both work hard when they could just fuck off abroad and do bugger all. There’s much worse role models young people could have.
I can’t decide if people are just nasty or bitter and jealous as their own lives are a dismal disappointment.

Summertimealready · 06/06/2025 14:33

@AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta

That's exactly what I was remembering too.
That's the real David Beckham.

I think the criteria for who gets a knighthood is spectacularly vague.

I am def not a United fan but tbh I wish him well.
He comes across as a nice guy-and yes he has grafted for it but when I look at some of the other recipients he is more than worthy.

I think it is going to be so much fun to watch him and Posh get them-imagine the spectacle and the outfits.
Things are pretty miserable all round at the moment and this bit of fun is welcome. 👑🎩I don't think this is one to take too seriously!

anniegun · 06/06/2025 14:35

Jimmy Saville was also knighted so standards are pretty low

Honestly no, I don’t know the tax affairs of anyone who has received a knighthood. If they’re giving them out without basic checks such as this then I’d like to see the system made a bit more stringent. Most of them have expensive accountants that make sure no laws are being broken though so how they would disqualify them I don’t know. Perhaps we need to tighten our tax laws so that the morally wrong options are off the table

That won't have anything on their wedding thrones 😅

I was thinking the same-maybe bring them out for the after party??

And those purple suits!!!!!

😆 Torvill and Dean eat your hearts out

Inertia · 06/06/2025 14:38

I think honouring sportspeople is as valid as honouring actors/ musicians.

I’m more bothered about the peerages and honours bestowed upon political deadweights whose actions have been harmful to the UK, such as David Cameron, David David and Nick Gibb.

Fair enough to have an opinion, but this is the worst reason for complaining about getting - or not getting - a knighthood 😂

TrickyD · 06/06/2025 14:40

if sporting types are getting knighthoods or damehoods, I would pick Torville and Dean before Beckham.

FoodAppropriation · 06/06/2025 14:41

and well, being full of your own importance can't be a criteria, or what would happen to Will and Kate?

Soontobesingles · 06/06/2025 14:41

I think it’s just one of those things. Honors are political and always have been. DB has arselicked enough to get one. A friend of my DH has an OBE and he told me ‘anyone in my job long enough gets one. It’s just how it works.’

They'd need to ask Harry and Meghan.

Every rich person avoids tax (legally)if he possibly can.

When they’ve got more than enough money if they have a conscience, they shouldn’t.
