To not agree with David Beckham being knighted

Those two are so full of their own self importance already. A knighthood will make them even worse. Absolute publicity seeking pains. They've been angling for this for years.

I’ve heard their charity is amazing

derxa · 06/06/2025 14:11

If MN is against it then I’m all for it.

You really have got it bad. He queued on behalf of his late grandparents.

So? Very commendable, How does that worthy behaviour contribute towards a knighthood?

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 06/06/2025 14:11

Beckham has been in line for a knighthood for more than a decade after playing more than 100 times for England

I think I'd feel a bit embarrassed if I'd played football for my country 100 times but never managed to help them bag any silverware or even get to a major final.

Surely the womens team, who achieved both of those feats should be mostly made up of Dames now.

And people justifying him deserving it because he queued nicely to pay respect to the queen is hilarious. A good friend of mine did the same thing, she's yet to even receive a MBE but I'll tell her to keep an eye out for it arriving in the post now!

She will be even more unbearable as Lady Beckham!

As long as she realises it is Lady Beckham and not Lady Victoria Beckham, which she was reported to have said a few years ago when the possibility of David being knighted was brought up.

Screamingabdabz · 06/06/2025 13:18

No one should be given a knighthood for their kicky ball skills. It just shows how meaningless the whole charade is.

I do think that's dismissive of the sporting profile he has - but I've seen you use that sneering term before.

I'm not a fan of the honours system but I'd much rather he got a knighthood than some of the politicians who've received one.

Tell that to the covid nurses

So many non sequiturs on this thread.

Of course being a professional athlete is hard work.

What a profoundly ignorant opinion.

I admire David and Victoria. They have made the.most of themselves and both built very successful careers. I would say they are good role models for youngsters in showing how hard work and being canny can make you successful. They also are very committed to their family which is refreshing these days.

I hope David enjoys his Knighthood.

Their own children don’t exactly reflect that, do they?

He's done more for this country than you have... moaning on mumsnet.

Why do you even care

But...if they did give out honours for 'Moaning on Mumsnet' OP would be a shoo-in. No question.

Playing football isn't working hard

It is when you reach the top and stay there through yout efforts. UNICEF and charity works require effort too

Threads like this really brings out the lowest common denominator. It's so predictably depressing....

The women’s team is too busy throwing their toys out of the pram.

What stupid snobbery

tinyspiny · 06/06/2025 14:16

I can think of many worse recipients so I can’t say I’m bothered , should probably do away with the honours system anyway .

Pandasandelephants · 06/06/2025 14:18

the whole knighthood circus is a farce and should be abolished.

Every rich person avoids tax (legally)if he possibly can.

Allseeingallknowing · 06/06/2025 14:19

The whole honours system needs reviewing. Knighthoods should only be given for exceptional long term contributions to society. Winning gold medals at the Olympics is very good but don’t warrant a knight or Damehood imo. Neither do ostentatious acts of publicised charity, brown nosing those in high places or someone’s pathetic desperation to be knighted . Very few actually deserve them. Many should be recognised for their achievements, whether sporting or charitable, but the bar needs setting much higher for a knighthood.

DisforDarkChocolate · 06/06/2025 14:20

Nearly everyone who gets knighted has bought it is some way. Who want to be on the same club as Jimmy Savil?

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 06/06/2025 14:20

He's played for his country, done a lot for the British Olympic group, no doubt does much other good work that we don't know about.
She's talentless but made lots of money because people buy her stuff ... not sure why, wannabes likely.

VickyEadieofThigh · 06/06/2025 14:21

Honon · 06/06/2025 13:12

The whole system is a problem and is heavily biased towards those who shout the loudest and know the right people. But within that context I wouldn't pick on Beckham especially, he's achieved more than many who have been knighted he's been a high profile ambassador for English football for decades now.

Indeed.

The whole honours system is a complete nonsense, of course. As pp have pointed out, some people get honours (include knight and damehoods) simply for doing their jobs.

It's not snobbery, it's being accurate.

David Bowie and Danny Boyle both declined knighthoods. David Beckham however is desperate for one.

Dangermoo · 06/06/2025 14:25

Never mind, he could have caused the death of many innocent civilians and soldiers. All this frothing about an ex footballer receiving a knighthood. Remember Sir Geoff Hurst.
