To not agree with David Beckham being knighted

Those two are so full of their own self importance already. A knighthood will make them even worse. Absolute publicity seeking pains. They've been angling for this for years.

Look up sporting knights and dames on Wikipedia. A lot of you will never have heard of many of the more modern ones. MN generally hates sport.

Cyclebabble · 06/06/2025 15:08

He has done a lot for charity and for sport. I think he deserves it.

Of course being a professional athlete is hard work.

What a profoundly ignorant opinion.

Being a professional athlete being paid a hell of a lot of money doing something you love is not hard work. What utter crud.

Most notably English sportsmen.

Tax evader so in my book he shouldn’t be knighted

How?

So do a lot of people. Doesn’t warrant a knighthood . He already has a CBE - more than enough.

But what he did wasn’t legal:

Anyway, the knighthood was always going to happen at some point after the tax evasion scandal was largely forgotten. We all know they’ve been campaigning for this for years and he’s been a UNICEF ambassador for ages. Knighthoods have been given for less. Does anyone know if they’ve donated any of their own cash to charity?

He crossed the line from tax avoidance to tax evasion.

Justabouthangingon · 06/06/2025 15:16

He has done a LOT of good. When my daughter was critically ill I saw first hand how much the Beckhams supported the hospital, nothing ever in the papers, kept completely private.

Dideon · 06/06/2025 15:18

LunaDeBallona · 06/06/2025 14:33

What have you done for your country compared to him?
He had a long football career, representing England over 100 times. He was also captain.
He worked hard with Prince William to secure the London Olympics 2012. All his own time, his own expense.
He works for UNICEF
He and Victoria set up a charity/foundation to help disabled children years ago which they give money and time to.
He lives here.
He pays his taxes here.
He supports and gives time to grass roots sports.
He has been appointed a representative of the Kings foundation.
He LOVES his country which is more than the likes of ‘Sir’Keir and ‘Sir’Sadiq Kahn.
Do you complain when civil servants get awards just for doing their well paid job??(see the two above).
If he was that ‘full of his own self importance’ he wouldn’t have queued for 12 hrs to pay his respects to the late Queen, or do ‘normal’ things like go for pie and mash/do his own cooking.
I know that nobody is universally liked but do people really have to be so mean about him and his wife? Both self made, both work hard when they could just fuck off abroad and do bugger all. There’s much worse role models young people could have.
I can’t decide if people are just nasty or bitter and jealous as their own lives are a dismal disappointment.

How do you know he loves his country more than Kier or Sadiqe ?

They'd need to ask Harry and Meghan.

If we MUST have someone, I'd rather Harry and Meghan.

I think Brand Beckham has done a lot for the British reputation and visibility overseas in the past (more before their children were adults than now). As a footballer he helped keep British football in the top tier globally. David personally was instrumental in securing the Olympics, and he also does a lot of charity work. Far less deserving people than him have been given knighthoods, I am pleased he's finally getting one.

have you ever practiced a sport in your life? What a strange - and sorry but stupid-- comment

I prefer Beckham getting a knighthood to a load of old luvvies prancing around on stage.

What, really talented actors who bring entertainment and joy to millions are less important than an ex footballer who takes money from anyone to promote their shitty product, even if the place he promotes thinks women are mens property and gays should be murdered?!

Oh stop being so silly. Being an elite sportsperson is huge amounts of dedication and hard work, no matter how much you love doing it.

Have you ever been a professional sports person? You have to keep yourself very physically fit. You have to have specialised diets. The constant threat of injury. Endless media intrusion. You have a short professional life etc.

LittleHouseOnThePrarie · 06/06/2025 15:24

I can't see what he's done to deserve this other than play football.

What irks me- and it was the same with Lineker- is that he is actively advertising products that are not conducive to healthy living but clearly aimed at a young age group - lager and Pepsi (or Coke?)
Like Linker was doing crisps.

He doesn't need the money and his time could be spent better promoting exercise / health for an obese nation!

spoonbillstretford · 06/06/2025 15:24

I'm not fussed either way. I don't think he quite deserves a knighthood but far worse people have been knighted and I don't dislike Victoria and David.

Words · 06/06/2025 15:25

And so it should be. But with a couple of arrivistes like those two you can be sure there were other reasons to keep it quiet. Tax related, I imagine.

As for the shoot - I don't care about that as long as he has been taught the difference between a grouse and a golden plover for example. And takes a brace or two back home for Chef to cook. But again, suspect a bit of cynical ingratiation going on. Those circles will smell him a mile off, so the knighthood is surprising.

Everything is being degraded these days.

Spirallingdownwards · 06/06/2025 15:26

Does a lot (and I mean a lot) of charity work and was instrumental in helping bring the London Olympics here which massively boisted the economy so far more worthy than many other people who get honours.

If you don't like them you don't have to.

PomeloOud · 06/06/2025 15:27

The whole honours system is an embarrassment - an outdated relic. David Beckham is a dick who called the honours committee ‘a bunch of cunts’ when it wasn’t going his way.

I have zero respect for anyone that accepts an honour.

Many charity works and work on the Olympic committee are what he has done to deserve it.

Bedknobsandhoovers · 06/06/2025 15:27

He's more deserving than many others who've been given gongs.

Good for him, it doesn't really affect me. The sun will still rise in the morning.

Instrumental? You mean he turned up in Singapore for a few days to add a bit of celebrity to what was already a great bid. Lord Coe oversaw the whole Olympic Games planning for several years in return for his title (and he was paid to do the role too).

Fiver555 · 06/06/2025 15:32

He went up in my estimation when he queued along with the rest of us for the Queen.
