To not agree with David Beckham being knighted

Those two are so full of their own self importance already. A knighthood will make them even worse. Absolute publicity seeking pains. They've been angling for this for years.

He acted like a spoilt brat when he didn’t get one years ago! It was embarrassing to see how desperate he was for a knighthood, and sucking up to Royalty. Lady Victoria must now be thanking her lucky stars she didn’t leave him after the Rebecca Loos incident.

Continually working with countries known for human rights abuse is my issue with him.

I agree with you, but since the government arms and does deals with such regimes, and the monarchy has been hand in glove with human rights abuses forever, I don't think anyone in power is going to see that as a problem. (More's the pity.)

mutinyonthetwix · 06/06/2025 13:20

I don't particularly think he deserves the honour on one hand. On the other hand the honours system is such a farce now I can't particularly bring myself to be bothered about it anymore.

Hoolahoophop · 06/06/2025 13:18

@BobbyBiscuits What's so awful about his wife?

How long have you got? 🤣

Pancakeflipper · 06/06/2025 13:21

I think the value of Kinghthoods has been devalued in recent years. I think it's time to reduce the number given. Be tougher on the criteria.

It seems to mean alot to him and his wife so hope it makes them happy.

Allseeingallknowing · 06/06/2025 13:17

That doesn’t warrant a knighthood!

I didn't say it did. You must have missed my first sentence. He's also done some work in developing countries, working with kids wanting to play the game. His behaviour on Queen's passing complements his commitment to sport and developing young talent.

Dangermoo · 06/06/2025 13:22

Oh and I can face Becks being called Sir far more than Blair.

toomuchfaff · 06/06/2025 13:24

He's done more for this country than you have... moaning on mumsnet.

Why do you even care

PauliesWalnuts · 06/06/2025 13:25

Agree - he’s a massive suck up to the royals, a tax evader, and I feel that his charidee work is only to keep him in the public eye.

Other people are far more deserving, including some civil servants! I’ve worked with several colleagues (not necessarily Senior Civil Servants) who have been awarded honours and can honestly say they have all been extremely well deserved by people who have gone above and beyond in public service. I can’t say that David Beckham has done the same altruistically.

Dangermoo · 06/06/2025 13:27

Nah, he's just worked with Unicef, instead of sitting on his arse in Whitehall.

Init4thecatz · 06/06/2025 13:27

I'm all for it.

He was a decent footballer and was the face of British football for years. I mean, if you were to ask anyone to name a British footballer, they'd probably name Beckham!

He's your classic rags to riches person. He has worked HARD to be where he is, and I don't even care, i hate football. I'd take him any day over any politician being knighted.

I think knights should be good representatives of the country. Someone who people think of when they think of your country, in a good way. I think he ticks that box.

Figcherry · 06/06/2025 13:27

I prefer Beckham getting a knighthood to a load of old luvvies prancing around on stage.

Stellaris22 · 06/06/2025 13:28

He wouldn’t need to do charity work if he (and others) paid their taxes (and they were distributed fairly).

Its amazing how people applaud charity work from tax evaders.

She will be even more unbearable as Lady Beckham!

TillyTrifle · 06/06/2025 13:29

Meh. I can’t bring myself to be too upset about it. There’s far worse injustices taking place in the world and he’s done a lot for the promotion of British sport. Let’s face it, he would have got it years ago if it weren’t for those unfortunate leaked emails. And he can’t enjoy it now without all that being dragged back up so it comes with a fair dollop of renewed embarrassment.

I’ll save my rage for other issues and not get too worried about this one. I suspect he’s having a pretty awful time at the moment anyway having effectively lost his first born son after being such a tight knit family. Can’t bring myself to begrudge him this and I imagine it’s pretty bittersweet given his son won’t be anywhere near the ceremony.

ARichtGoodDram · 06/06/2025 13:30

I'm surprised he's getting it after that embarrassing whinge about it years ago.

NormasArse · 06/06/2025 13:31

Screamingabdabz · 06/06/2025 13:18

No one should be given a knighthood for their kicky ball skills. It just shows how meaningless the whole charade is.

I suspect it’s more for charity work and the development of grass roots football.

Like it or not, footy gives young people a focus, and keeps them fit. I have no interest in it, other than watching my kids (two boys and girl) play when they were younger. They all still have friends they made whilst playing for local teams.

TillyTrifle · 06/06/2025 13:31

And I bloomin’ love Posh. She’s hilarious, witty and self deprecating never mind an insanely talented designer who has achieved more than most could dream of. Let her be lady of the manor, at least she has done something with her life and didn’t just inherit it! (Yes I realise it’s not her achievements getting her the title but still!)

AndrewPreview · 06/06/2025 13:33

Lots of arseholes get honours, it's all a popularity game of sucking up to the right people.

I don't mind him (especially as he made posh admit to being driven to school in a Rolls Royce).

derxa · 06/06/2025 13:34

Well done David you deserve it.

What exactly has he been knighted for ? Service to nasty tattoos?

MungoAndMidgeNotMary · 06/06/2025 13:38

As one of the very few celebrity crushes I have ever had, I would give the knighthood to him just for being hot...

WitchesCauldron · 06/06/2025 13:39

HeddaGarbled · 06/06/2025 13:08

Ah, I don’t know. I’m sort of pleased he’ll get it at last (to the small extent I care about that sort of stuff). He’s worked hard enough for it.

How has he exactly worked hard?

What has he done for 'this country' exactly? Other than played football here more than twenty years ago. He probably doesn't even pay UK tax on most of his assets/income.

GrouachMacbeth · 06/06/2025 13:41

We went be sent to the tower if we don't tug our forelocks or call him/her sir or lady. They don't get our money as a result. They will sill be six foot under or ashes when they croak.
