To not agree with David Beckham being knighted

Those two are so full of their own self importance already. A knighthood will make them even worse. Absolute publicity seeking pains. They've been angling for this for years.

How has he exactly worked hard?

Do you not know about his work with UNICEF? Clearly not, when the way a man looks is more of a determining factor for you.

Uricon2 · 06/06/2025 13:42

He was pretty much the footballer of his generation in the UK and has done significant charity work.

If everyone who got a gong was purity tested for lifetime behaviour and total deservedness, there would be very few handed out and those recipients still wouldn't please everyone. Far, far worse and less worthy than Beckham have had them and will continue to get them.

Init4thecatz · 06/06/2025 13:27

I'm all for it.

He was a decent footballer and was the face of British football for years. I mean, if you were to ask anyone to name a British footballer, they'd probably name Beckham!

He's your classic rags to riches person. He has worked HARD to be where he is, and I don't even care, i hate football. I'd take him any day over any politician being knighted.

I think knights should be good representatives of the country. Someone who people think of when they think of your country, in a good way. I think he ticks that box.

Playing football isn't working hard

Never heard of his work with Unicef- that speaks volumes. Heard a lot more about his idiotic sons tho...

SpidersAreShitheads · 06/06/2025 13:44

When Posh and Becks were first a thing, I wasn’t a fan of either. I don’t like the whole WAG culture and they seemed to epitomise everything I disliked about it.

But over the years my opinion of them both has gradually changed. She’s got a self-deprecating sense of humour and he’s worked his absolute arse off with grass roots football and helping kids. They both clearly adore their kids and are really family-oriented.

Slagging off Beckham is a bit of a national sport but I think he’s actually a decent guy who genuinely wants/tries to make a difference.

If it were just for his footballing career, I’d agree a knighthood would be undeserved but if you look at everything he’s done I think he’s a worthy candidate.

Lots of people criticising don’t have the first clue about all the good work he’s done over the years, much of it quietly, without splashing it everywhere for PR.

PauliesWalnuts · Today 13:25 "Agree - he’s a massive suck up to the royals, a tax evader, and I feel that his charidee work is only to keep him in the public eye."

Tax evasion is a crime. Do you realise you are accusing him of a crime?

cumbriaisbest · 06/06/2025 13:45

HeddaGarbled · 06/06/2025 13:08

Ah, I don’t know. I’m sort of pleased he’ll get it at last (to the small extent I care about that sort of stuff). He’s worked hard enough for it.

What work?

Choux · 06/06/2025 13:45

PauliesWalnuts · 06/06/2025 13:25

Agree - he’s a massive suck up to the royals, a tax evader, and I feel that his charidee work is only to keep him in the public eye.

Other people are far more deserving, including some civil servants! I’ve worked with several colleagues (not necessarily Senior Civil Servants) who have been awarded honours and can honestly say they have all been extremely well deserved by people who have gone above and beyond in public service. I can’t say that David Beckham has done the same altruistically.

Yes. He has undergone a years long rehabilitation of himself following being told his tax affairs made him not suitable for a knighthood and his leaked outrage at not getting one back then. He has had his eyes on a knighthood for years and years. The charity work and standing in line for hours to pay respects to the late Queen comes across to me as a means to an end.

If they get divorced in the future, does Victoria stay a Lady? Not that I think they will, they seem all about the brand and self promotion so I think neither would want a ‘failed’ marriage.

TillyTrifle · 06/06/2025 13:31

And I bloomin’ love Posh. She’s hilarious, witty and self deprecating never mind an insanely talented designer who has achieved more than most could dream of. Let her be lady of the manor, at least she has done something with her life and didn’t just inherit it! (Yes I realise it’s not her achievements getting her the title but still!)

This is satire right?

You asked the question. Why does his working with children in need speak volumes? Oh you mean his worthy knighthood.

cumbriaisbest · 06/06/2025 13:46

Services to plastic surgery and being skinny.

ReachOutfortheSunshine · 06/06/2025 13:47

'Full of their own self importance' isn't really a valid reason not to award a Knighthood.

'Beckham has been in line for a knighthood for more than a decade after playing more than 100 times for England and becoming well known for his charity work, much of which is focused on improving the lives of underprivileged children.'

PhilippaGeorgiou · 06/06/2025 13:48

Those two are so full of their own self importance already.

I agree. David and Charles think far too much of themselves.

OfDragonsDeep · 06/06/2025 13:48

I like them. I think he deserves it.

MeridianB · 06/06/2025 13:49

Stellaris22 · 06/06/2025 13:19

Paying UK tax should be a minimum and non negotiable requirement for a knighthood.

This. And the Qatari element was grim, although the King has just hosted their ruler so clearly they are on the same page with that. But how Beckham squares that with Unicef is odd.

Many don't deserve it, including him.

CarpetKnees · 06/06/2025 13:49

ACynicalDad · 06/06/2025 13:09

I have more of a problem with the number of politicians, Whitehall civil servants and diplomats that get these things. If you get senior enough it seems you get it for doing your job rather than for being exceptional.

This 100%

I have issues with the system generally, but in terms of the system being as it is, he has done far more than many who have received knighthoods or who have been made a dame, and definitely far more than the shockingly poor politicians who seem to be handed them like sweets.

The level of ignorance isn't surprising.

Flying around the world first class and first class accommodation for by the charity he represents?
I think we all know the purpose for his charity work. He made no secret of the fact he was desperate for a knighthood!

InWalksBarberalla · 06/06/2025 13:53

Does he have to go fight a dragon now?

Great that he's getting one then 👍

HRTQueen · 06/06/2025 13:53

There are a number far less deserving that have received a kinghood for just being chums with ex PM's

This I have an issue with

He does, every night

CantStopMoving · 06/06/2025 13:55

I don’t like him much and his family much particularly for various reasons but I do think out of anyone he has fulfilled the brief of what a knighthood is for. You can’t say he hasn’t done an enormous amount of charity work and been a good ambassador for football and sport in general.
