7 years for the boy and three for the girl. This country is pathetic sometimes. A man lost his life while innocently walking his dog. Too sad

I can understand the hope that young teenagers might be able to grow as people and still make a decent life, so I can understand the wish to rehabilitate. I also understand that the boy had a dysfunctionai upbringing. So I suppose they have to be given a chance due to their ages. I agree the sentences should have been longer though.

However very sadly I don't know if somebody capable of knocking a defenceless old man to the ground and kicking him, then filming it could ever become a decent person. Especially the boy who told a pack of lies about poor Mr Kohli, claiming he had a knife and the boy was defending the girl from him. Ridiculous. Insulting his memory and giving his family more grief.

The judge saw through the boy's 'remorse', however he made ill judged remarks about the attack not being racially motivated. Clearly it was, imo. I should think the Asian community in Leicester will be furious about this and I wouldn't blame them.

It's a shockingly lenient sentence. And the judge's comment that racism had nothing to do with it is stunningly ignorant.

They behaved like animals.

I just can't understand the judge saying that racism had nothing to do with it, it very clearly did!

The offenders were children.

Don’t you understand that?

OonaStubbs · 06/06/2025 17:16

I honestly don't care about rehabilitating criminals. I can't see why they should be given the chance to live normal lives, their victims don't have this choice. Just lock them up and throw away the key.

Iloveeverycat · 06/06/2025 17:31

And it was manslaughter and should have been murder

OonaStubbs · 06/06/2025 19:29

I think serious questions need to be asked about the justice system in this country.

Swiftie1878 · 06/06/2025 19:35

Any repercussions for their parents, I wonder?

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 06/06/2025 19:37

Come on Keir, where will justice come from, if it doesn't come from you?

The Home Secretary, presumably, since Justice is their remit and nothing to do with the PM.

karoba · 06/06/2025 19:45

I've applied today to the Attorney General for their sentences to be reviewed. I suggest everyone who feels as strongly about this issue as I do does the same so that the AG comprehends how disgusted people are about this shocking crime and the unduly lenient sentencing.

This is so heartbreaking, the poor family. Really sad story and shockingly low sentence they should have got life for that it's horrible.

MintChocCat · 06/06/2025 19:50

This is a cruel, evil and clearly racially-aggravated case of murder. On behalf of his family, I am saddened, angry and disappointed. It is cases such as these that further reinforce my disillusionment with the police and justice system in this country.

It’s as though little to no value was placed on that poor gentleman’s life.

Absolutely abhorrent offenders that deserve much harsher sentencing.

my thoughts are with his family. I don’t know how you grieve such an incident.

Yes, I absolutely understand that the offenders are children. I’ve worked with children for over 30 years. 12 and 14 year olds know right from wrong (apart from a very small minority).

The legal age of criminal responsibility in this country is 10. They committed a crime and should be punished accordingly, within the law.

But the fact that the judge declared that the attack wasn’t racially motivated is causing serious concern. Many, many people think that it was because of the language used by the defendants. If it the judge had decided that there was a racial element to the attack, the sentences would most likely have been longer.

Judges do make mistakes when sentencing and I think these sentences need to be reviewed as unduly lenient.

Wasn’t there videos on the girl’s phone with racist name calling?!

Dutchesss · 06/06/2025 19:53

Imagine laughing at an old man being beaten to death. These aren't human, there is no rehabilitation for that level of depravity.

It’s 10 in England. Different elsewhere in uk.

they are still children and this is therefore taken into account sentencing.

I still think it’s too lenient even for a child. I think most would agree. Just abysmal.

StMarie4me · 06/06/2025 20:03

I am also angry about this.

sprinklesandshines · 06/06/2025 20:04

Presumably this is because of how young they are, especially the girl. I think they feel like rehabilitation is less likely if the girl gets longer and ends up going to an adult prison. They likely want the boy to be out of prison when he is relatively young for similar reasons. A lot
of prosecutors believe the longer someone spends in prison the less likely they are to be able to be rehabilitated. I hope their families get investigated- what sort of parents and upbringing must they have had for their them to end up being murderers?

presumably they’ll have new identities on release?

dollyblue01 · 06/06/2025 20:07

This is an absolute disgrace to that poor poor man and his family , 7 years for a life ? What kind of message does that send out to teenagers ? Disgusting he should have got life for a life.
cried reading it, was so so sad.

LemonLeaves · 06/06/2025 20:11

My heart breaks for Bhim Kholi's family. I can't even begin to imagine how they must feel - to lose a loved one in such a cruel and dreadful way. And then to have to live with "justice" having been done.

tonyhawks23 · 06/06/2025 20:17

I just read a quote that says "The more helpless the victim the Greater the crime" and I wish that was something the Judge would have felt. Is there a chance of appeal?

deeahgwitch · 06/06/2025 20:17

Can it be appealed ?

Are you saying an elderly persons life is worth more than a younger persons? If anything surely it’s worth less, the man was 80 so probably didn’t have many years left anyway. I’m not saying that makes it okay or less horrific, but are you really saying they should have got longer because the man was elderly than they would have if they’d killed a 20 year old, 40 year old, 60 year old?

What a vile comment! You should be ashamed for saying this man's life was worth less than a younger person's. I'm sure your parents and grandparents are very proud.
