Tell me my dh is being unreasonable ?
We have a noisy petrol mower at he is outside mowing the lawn !
I've been out ( in my nightie ! ) and told him it's too early , and he has told me it's not .
Surely it's way too early ?

Actually early morning and early evening are the most important bird feeding times. Disturbing other people and wildlufe early in the day just because you can doesn't necessarily mean that you should.

The thing I have noticed over the 60 odd years I've been feeding birds in various gardens in very varied locations is that particular gangs of birds arrive at various times over the course of the day. So, for example, the goldfinches and the long tailed tits have an afternoon slot, the bullfinches start in the early morning but disappear for the afternoon and come back around teatime for the rest of the day. Birds that don't use the feeders but pick up on the ground are here all day. I stand by my comment also that birds are not generally scared off by noise. My husband has coincidentally just finished mowing and none of the birds budged.

Isobel201 · 02/06/2025 12:05

Monday IMO its okay - night workers are still coming home, and day workers are just getting up anyway. I think if its a Sunday then you have a point.

Rolo87south · 02/06/2025 12:17

Would not bother me at all. I would just be thankful that he's keeping his garden presentable.
Unlike the neighbours I have who are causing rats by letting there garden grow like a jungle.

Northernladdette · 02/06/2025 12:20

Whatever happened to consideration for your neighbours? My husband would never make noise before 10am, that includes rolling out bins 😳

Going against the grain here but I go with the planet's seasonal rhythms.

if the sun's up you're free to make noise until it goes down 🤷🏼‍♀️

The birds wake me up long before any human does anyway

Edited

I live inScotland sunrise is 4.30 and sunset is 21.50. If someone was mowing a lawn at 4.30am there would be hell to pay!

Good for you and your husband. The birds in my garden are most active for feeding purposes in the morning and early evening.

Having been quoted multiple times- 7am is too early to be that noisy, however I’m surprised people are actually asleep at 7am on a weekday in the summer.

In winter, absolutely understand people can be asleep at 7am and still make it to work on time.

Summer though, I assumed people would have been woken by the light, unless they have exceptional blackout curtains!

I must be a light sleeper- the noise of other people going about their day, getting in their cars, making phone calls wakes me well before 7am no matter how much I wish I was still asleep. DS does manage to roll out of bed at 8am and make it to work for 8.30am, but I’m pretty sure he’s already awake before that.

I’d love to know the statistics on the percentage of people in working household or with school aged DC, so therefore with people moving about fairly early.
It’s most people under 55 I’d have thought, which would still be most people at the moment.

I have excellent black out curtains and an eye mask.

I don’t want to be up when the sun comes up, I like a lie in!

On a school/work day my alarm is set for 7am the days I physically go into work and DS is at breakfast club and 7.45 on the days I WFH.

It might be Monday and a working day but I think its too early. 8 am is OK.
Saturday 9am, Sunday 10 am and try and avoid lunchtime.

Avoid lunchtime? When is that exactly?

Penthrowingsurvivor · 02/06/2025 13:38

So rude and inconsiderate.

My kids are not even awake on a school day at 7am!

Motherofalittledragon · 02/06/2025 13:55

Not illegal but I’d also be cursing his name!

Emmz1510 · 02/06/2025 14:04

Yes, it’s too early IMO

BitOutOfPractice · 02/06/2025 14:29

There have been some really daft comments on this thread but @MuffinsAreJustCakesAtBreakfast ’s crackpot theory that if it’s light it’s ok to make noise really does win.

Brownpaint81 · 02/06/2025 15:16

Being retired he could have picked any time

snd even if he did think he was reasonable, his wife was bothered about it, so he could have just waited but instead head down and ignored her

bloody hell it must be crap having someone like this around all day

OneNewLeader · 02/06/2025 15:19

I’m up early, but I wouldn’t mow the lawn until around 11 am. That way I wouldn’t annoy too many people.

I have exceptional blackout precisely because I don’t want to be woken by the sun rising at stupid o’clock in the summer! We have east-facing windows as well.

Because people might be sitting out in their gardens having lunch? I mean, it’s nice to be that considerate but even I think that’s taking it a little too far!

BethDuttonYeHaw · 02/06/2025 15:28

It’s far too early. Very anti social

830 maybe but 9am is more reasonable.

In the UK there are noise restrictions. It is generally accepted to mow after 8am,and he is bring unreasonable to mow before this.

I said when, not why. 12-3? Seems a big window to down tools.

You could always buy him a scythe and make him do it by hand - much quieter apart from a bit of swishing noise and grunting off him, more eco-friendly to wildlife and insects like mining bees etc, quieter for your neighbours and you won't have a peep out of him for the rest of the day as he will be too knackered 🤣🤣🤣

dandeliondandy · 02/06/2025 18:54

Bonus is you will always have a prop for Grim Reaper fancy dress! 😂

How can people be asleep at 7am on a weekday? Surely most people have work or school?

You Can’t really work around shifts as they are so variable.

Or are retired? Or have babies?

Noodles1234 · 02/06/2025 19:26

Yes it is a bit, I’d wait until 9am.

if a weekday / school day you could get away with 8am, 7am is a bit of a push and way too early if a weekend.

We are up every day 6am. 7am isn't a big deal.

Yes it is if you don't normally get up at that time and are having your sleep cut short. There is such a thing as thought and consideration for other people, and there are plenty of other hours in the day you can do noisy activities without disturbing people. You sum up one of the worst things about people, the I'm-alright-so-no-problem individualistic toxic attitudes. I'd be pissed if I normally get up at 8am and some thoughtless cunt insists on waking me up an hour early by mowing a lawn, revving a car engine or whatever.
