Tell me my dh is being unreasonable ?
We have a noisy petrol mower at he is outside mowing the lawn !
I've been out ( in my nightie ! ) and told him it's too early , and he has told me it's not .
Surely it's way too early ?

How can people be asleep at 7am on a weekday? Surely most people have work or school?

You Can’t really work around shifts as they are so variable.

I often sleep until 9 or 10am, no way would I ever get up before 8am.

(Childfree, and work part time)

whitewineandsun · 02/06/2025 08:41

I wouldn't mind this on a weekday. If it were the weekend, I'd want to kill him.

Ilovemyshed · 02/06/2025 08:43

It might be Monday and a working day but I think its too early. 8 am is OK.
Saturday 9am, Sunday 10 am and try and avoid lunchtime.

MoistVonL · 02/06/2025 08:44

The local council here says noisy work from 8am. 7am is too damned early.

None of us get up until just after 8 anyway, and the windows are all open because it’s warm, so I would have been very unimpressed if my neighbour used a petrol mower at 7!

It is very inconsiderate and nothing that can't wait for an hour unless you don't have neighbours close by? Why not do a few other gardening jobs like weeding first then mow a little later? Also there is still usually dew on the grass at that time as the sun isn't warm enough to cause it to evaporate so it isn't good for mower blades. It is also peak feeding time for the birds so the noise would scare them off.

Birds don't have a peak feeding time. They feed all day long. I've also never known any birds to be scared off by a lawn mower. They might startle and fly up if it makes a lot of noise starting up but that's all. The world is noisy and they really wouldn't survive if noise worried them.

Doesn't seem to have occurred to anyone what people who run gardening businesses are doing at 7am. I can assure you it's not paperwork.

Well our gardener turns up to work at 9am. I assume between 7 and 9 he’s showering, brushing his teeth, eating his breakfast and getting dressed.

Your neighbour is an asshole

It’s her husband doing the mowing. Not sure what her neighbour has done wrong?

Actually early morning and early evening are the most important bird feeding times. Disturbing other people and wildlufe early in the day just because you can doesn't necessarily mean that you should.

Reliablesource · 02/06/2025 09:16

8am earliest on a weekday, I’d say. Shift workers, people without children/school runs, people on a day off are all likely to still be asleep at 7am, so he should be more considerate. 8am is usually the earliest start time for noisy building works etc under most local authorities.

And definitely not before 10am at the weekend, when many people want a well-earned, peaceful lie-in.

Baital · 02/06/2025 09:36

Too early for a weekend, but OK for a weekday, though I would wait until 8am at ready myself

MintChocCat · 02/06/2025 09:37

I think 7am is too early to be mowing grass. 8am seems more reasonable.

You clearly have no clue about wildlife. A lot of birds and other wildlife is at risk because of humans. Bird numbers are dropping year on year.

CarrigDubh · 02/06/2025 10:03

If you are in Ireland, where it is a bank holiday today, then too early. But if it's a working day, then while it's a little early it's probably OK.

We are up every day 6am. 7am isn't a big deal.

You might be up but what about your neighbours??
It's only fine to do anything noisy at 7am if you happen to live in the middle of nowhere

CarrigDubh · 02/06/2025 10:07

PetiteBlondeDuBoulevardBrune · 02/06/2025 07:48

Lots of people are still in bed at 7am!

7:30 wake up and get ready / get kids ready
8:15 depart for school
8:30 school drop off
9am I start work

Yeah, work and school but still in bed at 7. Lucky enough for both to be close to home so very little commute.

BatchCookBabe · 02/06/2025 10:07

Waaaaaay too early. Though you will always get the virtuous '5am club' on here saying it's 'halfway through the day,' and accusing anyone who gets up after 8am of being lazy and slovenly... 🙄 I would be legit fucked off if my neighbour mowed the lawn at 7am. Who DOES that? I'd think they were deliberately trying to piss me of, or they were losing the plot.

DriveMeCrazy1974 · 02/06/2025 10:10

It's a weekday. I wouldn't be that bothered by somebody doing this at 7am on a weekday. If it was a weekend, I'd be furious!
Mind you, I live on a road that is busy and a local business that seems to think it's OK to do renovations (with machinery) at 7am on a weekday morning, so maybe I've just got used to this kind of thing.

Oh well if you’re up then of course the whole world should be 🙄

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 02/06/2025 10:14

I think it’s allowed, and not too awful on a weekday, but if it was on a weekend it would definitely not be on!

It’s the new version of the competitive undereaters club I think - the competitive early risers!

Eh???? You do realise that at least half of the population don’t have school age DC or 9-5 jobs! Think a bit wider than your own small world.

Lonelydave · 02/06/2025 10:26

7am is too early, 8 at a push. but it depends upon neighbours etc..,

It’s weird isn’t it? I wonder what these people would say about someone mowing their lawn at midnight, because ‘who the hell goes to bed before then?’
Some people are more productive in the evenings but like to sleep later. It’s a body clock thing, not a virtue thing.
I am an early riser, but that doesn’t mean I think everyone should be. If someone works from home, starting at 9am for example, why would they need to be up at 7?
Getting up early doesn’t make someone a better person.

People might have a day off? It's still the school holidays where we are as we get two weeks.
It's inconsiderate to make excessive noise so early.
