2nd Date, he embarrassed me in a restaurant

Am I over reacting here? I suspect I might be.

1st date went well, 2nd date today. We went for for late/early dinner. nice restaurant. We got talking about Austria, Switzerland etc and he said “I can yodel”. I just laughed so he said “I can show you?” So I laughed again and said “in the middle of a restaurant?”

He then started yodelling loudly. I swear everyone turned around and looked at us. I’m normally pretty passive and would usually just quietly die inside but on this occasion I was beyond embarrassed, absolutely mortified and snapped “Shush!”

He laughed and said “what?” So I said “seriously? We’re in the middle of a restaurant”. He said sorry (whilst still laughing) and tried to change the subject but I couldn’t get past it. Who does that?

I don’t like being centre of attention and yes I embarrass easy. I ended up going home early as I just couldn’t stop thinking about it. He’s messaged me since asking if everything is ok, I don’t think he’s actually associating my change in mood to the yodelling incident!! Making me think maybe I’m over reacting??

Sign me up for Yodelling Restaurant Guy. That sounds epic! And much more fun than talking about boring jobs or kids or whatever.

TENSsion · 31/05/2025 07:08

Throw him back in the sea.
Single me would have really loved this. I love confidence. He’ll find someone on his wavelength.
You’re just incompatible

IVbumble · 31/05/2025 07:56

There is a positive - you didn't find out about his yodelling skills at your wedding reception.

LoafofSellotape · 31/05/2025 08:01

I'm sure I've read about a date yodelling before, perhaps it's the same chap?!

booksnbaking · 31/05/2025 08:58

But what kind of yodelling? Alpine? Swiss? Cowboy?
So many questions, so few answers.

I often wonder why it's always the people who do mad socially unconventional things and behave like the zany friend in a romantic comedy who get credited with embracing life, seizing the day, living in the moment etc. Maybe OP's embracing life by having pleasant evenings in nice restaurants and not forcing other people to take part in her attention-seeking antics, you know, like a normal adult.

Exactly! No thought to the other diners either. It's so self indulgent and 'look at me'.

Caligirl80 · 31/05/2025 09:06

He sounds like a bit of a prat. And if he's annoying you that quickly and has views on social behaviour that clearly don't match yours then it's just going to keep annoying you. And you'll annoy him. Do yourself and him a favour and go out with someone else.

Completely agree. The whacky out there ‘ooh I’m mad me’ people are not just embracing life, they’re making it all about them.

Not being a show off doesn’t equal dull and boring, introverted, uptight, self conscious or any of the other things the OP has been called.

Most people manage to have full enjoyable lives without having to make themselves centre of attention in a restaurant where other people are trying to have a nice, relaxing night out.

Agree. Introverted doesn’t mean you hide yourself in a cupboard refusing to socialise or speak to people. They can be good company and a good laugh and sociable, just not 24/7 look at meeeee!

Or wedding night.

He comes across as someone who doesn't take himself too seriously fair play to him . You get embarrassed and shushed him. Maybe he thinks you are stuck up and don't know how to have laugh. If I went on a date with a man I just met and he sushed me I would be gone. You need to learn to lighten up maybe

BlueEyedBogWitch · 31/05/2025 09:46

Anyone else imagining him in lederhosen and a little hat?

Please note the OP reads "… I swear everyone turned around and looked at us”, not “… I swear everyone turned around, looked at us and joined in the laughter”.

dontcryformeargentina · 31/05/2025 09:50

Attention seeking and too stupid to understand how it affects people around him… Thank you, next!

shoelady2 · 31/05/2025 09:51

I would actually find that pretty funny. It certainly wouldn’t put me off him unless he was a complete exhibitionist who did that sort of thing all the time.

WhenYouSayNothingAtAll · 31/05/2025 09:52

I’d find it funny, you didn’t. He’s obviously the type of person who doesn’t give a fuck, while you have too many fucks to give. You’re not compatible and it’s best to end it now.

Onlyharmony · 31/05/2025 10:21

I think I would have walked out of there. I hate being embarrassed! 😫 Nope nopity nope, bye!

BangersAndGnash · 31/05/2025 10:26

Go on another date, turn up in a full Heidi outfit.
Or possibly a dress with a bodice, made from curtains.

Might be seen as milk maid wench, I think his yodelling might go stratospheric.

ChristmasFluff · 31/05/2025 16:56

He's not the one for you, OP. Your life will be full of experiences like this if he lacks filter, so don't sign up for it if that isn't what you want.

There are plenty of women who love men who don't give a shit about showing themselves up and who act daft. Let him meet one of those.

Isinglass20 · 31/05/2025 17:51

I’d be watching the waiters tittering and assuming he’d had too much wine, and the knowing looks and nudges if you went back 🤣🤣

TatteredAndTorn · 31/05/2025 18:06

It’s nice to be with someone that would do crazy things and make you laugh. All the more important as you age tbh and life can get very hard and boring. I would have felt mildly embarrassed but also would have found it funny. But if that’s not for you I’d knock it on the head. You shouldn’t be a in relationship where one person is suppressing the other because they find them embarrassing. Not good for either of you.

SamphiretheTervosaur · 31/05/2025 18:08

That would be simultaneously the most embarrassing and the funniest thing ever to happen on a date

If it isn't for you tell him. If you like him give him another chance, if he does similar agin walk away

Best of luck getting rid of the feeling of mortification

GentleJadeOP · 31/05/2025 18:15

It would be funny if you got as far as having sex and he started yodelling 🤣
