To be put off a man because he was asleep during the day?

Been on a few dates with a bloke. He sent me a message yesterday at 2pm asking what I was upto, I returned the question and he said “I’ve just woke up lol”. At 2pm?? He’d been up in the day earlier as he’d messaged me at 10am saying he was off to shop. How lazy - don’t get me wrong I’m not bursting with energy either but I at least stay awake during the day. It’s really put me off

Yes there is, it’s been shown that mid-afternoon naps are beneficial for brain health. UCL have done studies on it, unless of course you are more knowledgeable than UCL researchers?

Edited

Beneficial for some people, not all

To be fair I had spelled it wrong, I probably need another nap to recharge!

Yes, have a power nap!

LegallyLoopy · 21/05/2025 16:10

I’m so thankful my DH completely understands my need for sleep during the day. Some comments on here make it seem like having a sleep is some awful thing to do. It doesn’t affect plans in our house as DH will go out whenever he wants and I don’t leave the house due to pain and other issues.

Unnecessary to point out that someone claiming to be professor can't spell?

It's an Internet thread... not a conference paper. Now I'll have a nap.

Rumors1 · 21/05/2025 16:16

My BIL naps for 2 hours every day in the middle of the day. He is self employed and comes home for a 3 hour lunch break which includes a 2 hour nap.

I would struggle to put up with it if he was my DH. He has no issues sleeping during the night, is not busy in work, does nothing around the house, has no health issues so all I can conclude is he is being lazy.

If there is a health/physical need for it thats one thing, but it would put me off as I could see it continuing in the relationship where he naps while you are left minding children or cleaning the house.

It may be beneficial but I dont know anyone who is working full time, with children and pulling their weight around the house that would have the time for afternoon naps!

@PeptoDismal I'd be interested to know what you consider to be acceptable, when relaxing.
Is it okay to

  • read a book?
  • sit in the sun doing nothing / people watching?
  • Chat with a friend ?
  • watch TV?
  • start a thread on MN ?

I didn't realise that some ways of 'resetting' were acceptable, and others weren't.

Just the nap thing, I'd imagine, as that's what she posted about

I suffer with insomnia. So I nap every day as otherwise I wouldn’t be able to function. You are ridiculous

Which ones is it beneficial to and which ones isn’t it? How can we tell?

Koazy · 21/05/2025 16:21

I love a nap

SpunkySquid · 21/05/2025 16:21

Some right nasty cows on this thread. I suggest you all go take a nap. You all woke up on the wrong side of bed today.

BoudiccaRuled · 21/05/2025 16:24

I'd be more put off by the grammar.
WokeN up.

My sleeping at night is very bad, I have the type of insomnia where I can fall asleep but I wake up numerous times during the night. Having the freedom to nap any time I want is a godsend to me. I don’t change prior arrangements or let people down because of it though and I didn’t see anything in OP’s post to suggest he does either.

BunnyLake · 21/05/2025 16:25

How sexist! I have woman naps, are they ok?

Total red flag.

You. You're the red flag.

That is me exactly!! Half 2 every night I’m wide awake! It’s exhausting! It’s so hard to function without a nap later on. Luckily I work just 2 nights a week so I’m home with my toddler so I nap with her.

And as you said, I still make plans with friends and miss naps. I’m just a better human with a nap!

phoenixrosehere · 21/05/2025 16:27

BunnyLake · 21/05/2025 15:59

Thing is she is basing her ‘ick’ on one solitary nap with no backstory at all. I can’t help but feel she wasn’t that keen on him in the first place for one isolated nap to be such a deal breaker.

Agree after being on a few dates unless there’s some drip feed coming about him saying something on their dates that makes him lazy in her eyes.

Still her choice, but assuming he’s lazy based on a single nap when they have nothing planned is ridiculous.

TooBigForMyBoots · 21/05/2025 16:27

IABU to judge someone I barely know for having a nap during this hot weather?

Yes @PeptoDismal, YABU.

Naps are the best!

MayaPinion · 21/05/2025 16:49

’Post lunch dip’ is a well known and understood psychological phenomenon. It’s perfectly normal to feel tired in the early afternoon due to our circadian rhythm. It’s why coffee is often served after meals. You can find out more here:

RedPony1 · 21/05/2025 16:58

I'm with you OP. I couldn't date someone who naps, it's weird to me - who has that spare time anyway?!

lifeonmars100 · 21/05/2025 17:10

There was a time when an afternoon nap used to leave me nauseous and disoriented but as I have grown older I find them such a treat. If I have had a bad night or am recovering from a migraine a nap restores me. As for the OP's bloke, he was honest with her

justkeepswimingswiming · 21/05/2025 17:11

Omg how dare he have a nap!

Jesus. Get a life op.
