I'm alone on a uk beach, taking in the sun.

Will people likely be thinking the old beached whale thing?

We better play Frisbee further away because DSs aim is shit and mine is even worse.

Cynic17 · 20/05/2025 14:47

I'd just think, lucky her - I wish I had the opportunity to lie on the beach.
Also, bravo her, because she won't hide herself away because of societal perceptions of what women are supposed to look like!

PinataHeeHaw · 20/05/2025 12:07

Aw thank you. I'm so relaxed but also a bit on edge knowing people can be judgemental.

The people who are likely to be judgemental are going to be judgemental no matter what you do, whether it be lying on a beach, walking round a supermarket, running a marathon or whatever.

So there's no point even thinking about them, they're not worth the headspace

MH0084 · 20/05/2025 14:50

I would think how nice is that everyone regardless of age, gender, religion, shape, size or colour, can enjoy themselves at the beach! Nothing in the world is more democratic than that!

Todayisaday · 20/05/2025 14:51

Oh sounds lovely OP. Enjoy :)
People will judge all sorts of things, id they judge it is their issue and doesnt mean anything to your life.
Those kids are too noisy, her bikini is too small, his swim shorts are too tight, she has gone red from the sun, hes so pale and pasty, that kids too skinny, she looks like a rake, he boobs are so small, her boobs are massive, shes wearing a burkini, they have too many kids.
If a judgy person is going to judge you will be just one of the many people they have judged that day and it just means they are sad and unhappy.

Caligirl80 · 20/05/2025 15:12

In the words of the great Ru Paul "what other people think of me is none of my business". If you want to go lay on the beach, go lay on the beach. What other people think of how you look is utterly irrelevant to your enjoyment of your beach day.
Now, there may of course be some oafs who aren't so enlightened and have wretched body-image/social skills. If you are worried about hearing someone say something cruel then get yourself a nice pair of headphones and listen to some music or an audio book/podcast. Enjoy your day. Wear sunscreen, drink water.

GAJLY · 20/05/2025 15:17

I wouldn't care as I'm too wrapped up in how I look and feel! Don't give a second thought to other people's thoughts, because they are meaningless to you. You enjoy life and have fun!

EndlessTreadmill · 20/05/2025 15:21

I would register 'oh she's a bit fat' but I would think the behaviour is perfectly normal, and that she is right to be doing it.

And within 3 seconds I wouldn't be thinking about her at all, I would be thinking about myself....!!!

StrawBeretMoose · 20/05/2025 15:25

I wouldn’t think anything and anyone who does is not worth worrying.

I remember older female relatives worrying about how they looked on the beach while men with bigger boobs than them strutted around!

Honestly I was brought up with some fattist attitudes but as an adult have shed those.

Enjoy the beach.

FlumpWonPrize · 20/05/2025 15:44

I wish that I was laying on the beach in the sun !

Instead I am at a hospital appointment

Gettingbysomehow · 20/05/2025 15:46

Twofoursixeight · 20/05/2025 14:45

My god, in what context? Did they just approach you? What did you say??

They made nasty comments as they walked past or comments loud enough for me to hear. I was around a size 18 then just in shorts and a teashirt. I've since lost all the weight but it was just so humiliating.
There were no other large people on the beach. It was all teeny shorts or animal print thong bikinis. Some topless women.
I do speak French but was too humiliated to say anything.
I felt like a zoo elephant. I've never gone back.

babystarsandmoon · 20/05/2025 15:47

A lot of people seem to think others spend time thinking about them but they really don’t.

QOD · 20/05/2025 15:58

please dont feel like that, life is too short - no one worth anything would judge you

Maybe feel envy!

ItGhoul · 20/05/2025 16:02

I’d think “There’s a woman lying on the beach”. That’s all.

HarperStern · 20/05/2025 16:18

I live in a seaside town and see people of every shape and size on the beach every sunny day. I think nothing of it snd nobody else I know does either.

proximalhumerous · 20/05/2025 17:59

I suspect there are a lot of bikini bottoms on fire on this thread... Most people are too polite to say anything, and it's true that in general people are more concerned with their own appearance than that of those around them, but I simply don't believe the almost universal claim of >150 people on this thread that they "don't even notice" what other people look like.

If everyone was really as immune to what other people say, do and look like, Mumsnet would pretty much grind to a halt.

Anyway, try not to worry about what other people are thinking of you and enjoy your holiday because otherwise you'll just spoil it for yourself!

Pembrokecrier · 20/05/2025 18:00

I wouldn’t think anything at all and I would think anyone who does is an absolute idiot

Pembrokecrier · 20/05/2025 18:03

@proximalhumerous Its not that people don’t notice what either people look like, it’s more that they don’t think to make any form of judgement about it.

I think you will find those that pass judgement are in the minority, I mean who actually cares what other people look like on the beach

AgathaMystery · 20/05/2025 18:03

Neolara · 20/05/2025 12:06

No. The only thing I'm thinkin is, lucky you, I'd like to be sunbathing on a beach right

This!!

You may be right, but I do think there is an awful lot of virtue signaling going on on this thread which I'm taking with a large pinch of salt!

If people never made judgements the Daily Mail's sidebar of shame wouldn't be a thing, for starters.

I've had to work hard and it has taken years, to let all those shoulds and beauty expectations go, for myself. So I'm not going to start judging other women. Maybe there are a lot of us in the same boat?

mathanxiety · 20/05/2025 18:29

I would hope you had put on sunscreen.

mintbru · 20/05/2025 18:35

I hope she has sunscreen on? Other than that I wouldn't think anything to be honest and I hope everyone wears sunscreen!

PorgyandBess · 20/05/2025 18:45

The mature women of Mumsnet are going to be nice.

I’ve been on beaches with my friend. She’s massively overweight. I’ve seen how horrid people can be.
