Is is right that an unpopular govt can reverse the democratic wishes of the UK to have nothing to do with Europe?

I’m not an expert on climate change so have no informed opinions.

You don't need to be an expert. You just need to do a little reading. The consensus is broad - it's just distorted because broadcasters have a regrettable tendency to always put someone from the climate denial side on show in the interest of 'balance' - which makes viewers think the scientific community is split 50/50 on the issue. It is not.

I intended to vote Remain, but now I know more about democracy, EU protectionism, and Reform's plans to take advantage of the Brexit liberties, I am glad Leave won! When Reform get in, the UK will start trading all around the world- which is what we used to do before we joined the Common Market 50 years ago!

Ah so you’re a reform plant. Now it makes sense. You clearly have not learnt more, you’ve just swallowed Farage’s half arsed rhetoric.

And, as others have said, don’t vote, don’t comment.

DuncinToffee · 27/05/2025 21:27

derxa · 27/05/2025 21:22

But you are. It’s horrible.

What have I said to you that is horrible?

Brexit has been bad for farmers, the Aus and NZ deals are bad for farmers, I don't know if livestock import is bad for farmers, I just said it is still happening.

What a good thing you forgot to vote then eh.

How do you mean, because I am not a farmer? I buy meat and try to buy British where I can.

Brexit affects me and my family

SinnerBoy · 27/05/2025 22:59

DuncinToffee · Today 20:39

Not all, they also export livestock to the UK.

Having just been alongside by the ferry in Larne, I can confirm that it's true. Before anyone quibbles, there were lorries with Republic plates dropping trailers with Republic business numbers and town names on them.

A concrete example of how Farage has improved people's lives? He is the man behind Brexit, and so it is he more than anyone that we should thank for allowing us to live in a democracy again.

Brexit has not improved life for UK citizens.

The UK is a democracy and was a democracy as part of the EU. It's not something Nigel Farage or Brexit delivered, we've had it all along.

Nigel Farage is a shyster.🙈

I'm not arguing with you.

Of course it does, "poorer" farmers means we have to put up with even more of their constant fucking moaning.

I'm assuming this comment is a joke, but on the slim chance it's not let's just take a moment to consider your statement.

Firstly, technically speaking, we have never lived in the kind of democracy you allude to. The UK is a constitutional monarchy with a (at least on paper, FPTP I'm looking at you!) democratic parliament.
You don't get to vote on law any more than I do. You get to vote for representatives and then desperately hope they'll enact policies you agree with and not turn out to be a bunch of self-serving shysters. True, that last part hasn't gone especially well in the last few decades, but that's absolutely nothing to do with Europe.

So does your statement stem from a misunderstanding of the word "sovereignty"?
Well, the UK did not lose its sovereignty when we joined with Europe and has not lost it following the imbecilic act of self-harm that was the referendum. Our "sovereignty" has not been affected one iota.

Or perhaps you cling to the pernicious idea that we have "taken back control" that was spoon-fed to a desperate populous by egregious players in the whole debacle?
You can only maintain that stance if you can point to actual, real-world instances in which membership of EU made things demonstrably worse.
@brexitbarbie has made some effort here by referencing animal welfare regulations which, if true, is a genuine example of a ruling that we should be grateful to be free of, but the two issues there is firstly they have clung to that single example and attempted to weaponise it as an example of why the entire EU membership was bad, which is as intellectually lazy as it is wrong, and - secondly - only one or two examples, however valid, arguably do little to counter the enormous benefits that membership conferred.

What I suspect, other than the idea you may just be trolling for the lols, is that you have fallen / are falling for the duplicitous rhetoric of Farage, just as many Leave voters did during the referendum campaign, in the erroneous belief that your life will somehow be improved.
But the whole thing is illusory, as it always is. Farage will not make your life better; he doesn't give a fig for you or your life. He is doing it to serve his own selfish interests. You won't get your unicorn because they don't exist, and by the time you realise that the con-man who sold it to you will have already made good his escape.

FFS I bet you think Trump is doing an excellent job with his trade deals as well 😂

StandFirm · 28/05/2025 11:33

Trump, Farage and the rest of that lot are immensely wealthy people looking out for their own wallets and that of their business cronies.
Because of the unwillingness in both the UK and the US to reform a corrupt and ethically bankrupt donation system, politics has been highjacked by the super rich elite who will have you believe that educated people are the actual elite and the enemy, when all they want is to lord it over all of us and sow divisions so that we're too busy bitching amongst ourselves (and ignorant) to pay attention to their nefarious agendas.

Compassion in World Farming have been campaining about Live Exports for decades with the EU being intransigent, despite overwhelming public opinion - https://www.ciwf.eu/media-and-news/news/new-eu-law-to-protect-animals-during-transport-a-missed-opportunity/

I'm veering between pmsl and being confused by this post. When I read it I'm in stitches, but then it wears off and I don't understand the message.😟😳

So reread it and I'm back to laughing and it starts all over again.

My Team???

Its the UK matey! and no laughing matter, though why i'm i not surprised a farmer sees it as a laughing matter.

Don't read the Guardian.

14 years of the Tories have wrecked the UK, the latest is water, social housing and yes.. even farming... not that it bothers some who are making a fortune whilst moaning about paying less than 50% of the tax other wealthy people would have to pay.

Walkden · 29/05/2025 06:00

"the democratic wishes of the UK to have nothing to do with Europe?"

But they have a democratic mandate (from the election) from the UK public for this. Overwhelmingly so.

Sometimes in a democracy people have to accept other people voted differently to them. Stop being such a "bremoaner" about it lol

brexitbarbie · 29/05/2025 09:38

Alexandra2001 · 28/05/2025 06:21

Of course it does, "poorer" farmers means we have to put up with even more of their constant fucking moaning.

Your comments just show clearly your know naff-all about farming. What it does show is Labour's scattergun approach to taxation.

Most farmers are asset rich but cash poor, so any inheritance tax increase just means that farms will have to be broken up to pay for it,

This means that Millipede and "Rayner from housing" can have their way. They can cover the countryside with solar panels and pylons with housing estates in between.

Then where does our food come from?

If we have to import more food then we all pay more and that means you as well. Then you'd really have something to moan about
