Is is right that an unpopular govt can reverse the democratic wishes of the UK to have nothing to do with Europe?

We had many GEs, voting in pro EU governments every time... even after Maastricht, Lisbon, large scale migration from eastern europe... still voted in pro EU governments.

At which GEs did the second place party (i.e. Labour or Tory) campaign against the EU? I'll give you a clue - never!

Again - if the vast majority of the UK electorate had felt so passionately hard done by regarding not having had referendums at every change in the EU, they could have voted in UKIP. They didn't.

DuncinToffee · 23/05/2025 20:26

UKIP did well in the 2014 European Elections, Farage could have used his position as MEP to influence EU policies, if only he had bothered to show up.

And encouraged his fellow MEPs to turn their backs on the chamber. All they did was collect the salaries they pretended to despise.

They knew leaving would be bad for the UK.🤷‍♀️ The only party leader stupid enough to suggest it was David Cameron. He resigned the day after the result because he realised it was a very stupid thing to do.

It divided the country. It fucked the economy, the health service and immigration. It destabilised the Union. It wrecked the Conservative Party.

BIossomtoes · 23/05/2025 21:21

I guess nothing’s all bad.

Instead of fiddling his expenses? Which wasn't a criminal offence in the European Parliament, unlike in the UK.

I’d argue that the country has suffered hugely from having a government that was more interested in internecine power play and appealing to niche parts of its support than in actually governing the country. The referendum itself was part of this but what then played out was the loss of all sense of public service as well as the ideological purging of the centre-right and the loss of some principled politicians.

It’s what gave us Truss and Johnson as prime ministers, and may deliver a Reform government,

if leaving the EU was a winning formula, then one or both of the 2 main parties would have changed track and campaigned to leave, yet in 1997, despite having a eurosceptic wing in the party, the Tories never did, the MPs and membership didn't even vote for a anti EU leader.... had plenty of chances didn't they...

In 2010, the EU didn't even figure in the top 10 of voters concerns, it was a fringe issue, that only came to prominence with the likes of Bojo writing false articles about the EU as a journalist in Brussels and Farage and his racist rants... both of course very happy to take advantage of the FOM rules on working in Europe and the salary being an MEP gets plus of course a very large expenses tab.

Like Braverman and Stewart, totally hypocrites...

And Rayner with her council house debacle 🙄

Edited

So because he could, he did..... a fucking hypocrite of the worst order, he of course will get, for life a EU pension of £73k per year.... he should either decline it or give to charity as he hates all that EU "corruption and waste..."

Some chance....

Plus he did get docked £35,000 for expenses fraud.

So he did in fact fiddle his expenses, in any job i've ever had, that sort of thing would result in instant dismissal, its theft!

I suspect you shouted loudest "Resign" when Starmer had a suit bought for him didn't you, which is all within the 'commons rules.

Do you remember Liz Hurley voting leave because she believed some numb nuts who told her she would be able to get peach lightbulbs and powerful hairdryers? Still cracks me up.

Some have been paid back.

Starmer said he would pay back more than £6,000 worth of gifts he has recently received, including Taylor Swift, designer clothes and and race trips.

What an insult to pensioners who've had their WFP ripped off them 😡

So you agree that nonmajor party offered the option to the electorate to withdraw or step back from closer eu integration then, which is what I said in the first place when someone, maybe you, said that voters should have voted for parties against closer integration in elections if that’s what they wanted!

Well it seems like there was a lot of it about.

https://www.euronews.com/2019/04/11/anti-corruption-prosecutors-accuse-former-romanian-mep-of-fiddling-mep-expenses-to-tune-of

Now I know two wrongs don't make a right but I was told on this very thread how the EU parliament was democratic and transparent !

Last year, (2018) a European Parliament committee called for more transparency over a €4,416-a-month lump sum given to MEPs with no questions asked over how they spend it.
In September, the European Union’s top court ruled that MEPs do not have to reveal what they spend their general expenditure allowance on, in what critics described as a blow to transparency.

And it seems it still goes on.

https://brusselssignal.eu/2025/03/two-italian-meps-investigated-over-alleged-fiddling-of-european-allowances/#google_vignette

Transparency my hat !

Thank goodness we aren't paying for this any more.

My obsession with facts actually. I think they are really important and people who post inaccurate nonsense about really important things are damaging our society, so yes, I care.

Your c&p above - do you know exactly what payment it’s describing and what the situation is now, several years later? Or did you just find that on a biased website and plop it on here? Again, that matters to me. Because it predates a change in rules and no longer reflects reality.

I repeat for those who cba to read my earlier reply.

I did not bring up the issue of hypocrisy.

Someone opened the door and people now are getting upset because they saw something inside they didn't like.

Too bad. Maybe they should have "let sleeping dogs lie"?

My dog agrees, BTW zzzzz
