Neighbour bbq smoke

Heathershimmerwinner · 11/05/2025 15:54

Hi. My neighbour round the back has a raised bbq area. He has bbqs twice a day, not kidding. It’s getting a bit too much. The smell of the smoke is making me feel sick. We don’t get on with him as it is. So speaking to him is out the question. My washing constantly smells of smoke. I wouldn’t bother if he barbecued now and again. But it’s twice a day.

Well if you’re not willing to speak to him you’ll have to try and communicate telepathically.

WillTheSHTFsoon · 11/05/2025 15:56

That's ridiculous. I had to rewash my laundry today as some twat 2 doors down decided to start a bonfire in their garden yesterday afternoon.

Could you report to the council? Obviously a BBQ is very different to a bonfire but there must be some reportable issue for something. Do they run a smoking business or similar? Twice a day seems ridiculous

AlertCat · 11/05/2025 15:56

It’s hard to suggest anything if you can’t speak to him. Write a letter to him? Ask the council if he’s entitled to barbecue twice a day?

ThejoyofNC · 11/05/2025 15:58

I do the majority of my cooking outside in this weather. Don't like it, don't put your washing out.

Croquembouchiere · 11/05/2025 15:58

As already said, not sure what the answer is if you cannot talk to him. Maybe write a polite letter, but I'm not sure what that will achieve tbh. He isn't doing anything illegal AFAIK and it seems like he can't move the bbq if it's built in somewhere.

I do empathise though. I would not hang my washing out there anymore.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 11/05/2025 15:58

Start smoking weed against his wall and blowing it in his direction or burn your rotten food waste.
He is a selfish fecker

How very inconsiderate of you.

Why does washing trump cooking outside?

HollyGolightly4 · 11/05/2025 16:01

We might have to ask our neighbours this soon. Yabu because you won't ask! BBQs are to be expected, twice a day is unreasonable!

smart ar**! Why would I communicate telepathically? 🙄 I’d obviously speak to the environmental health

This is one of those things that seems to wind people up on MN but is just normal and acceptable IRL.

You can't tell your neighbour that he can't use his own BBQ in his own garden.

What about you cook indoors? No?

Isn't it just as inconsiderate to expect your washing to trump someone else's desire to BBQ?

What about people dry their washing indoors?

If you know, why are you asking?

Why does washing trump cooking outside?

Because one disturbs others’ quiet enjoyment of their garden and the other doesn’t.

Heronwatcher · 11/05/2025 16:06

He’s not doing anything wrong. No one “official” will give a monkeys, unless he’s burning car tyres or animal carcasses! You can theoretically do a BBQ for breakfast, lunch and dinner in your own garden if you want.

Honestly I think you might just need to have a chat and see if you can agree a couple of days when he doesn’t BBQ, or, if you’re not prepared to do that, make alternative arrangements for very nice weather (use a heated airer or front garden?).

Heathershimmerwinner · 11/05/2025 16:06

Hey I don’t mind the odd bbq especially in this weather. But when it’s been twice a day for the past 4 weeks it’s a bit too much. It’s not just my washing it’s inside my house too. I like to open my windows in this weather. Twice a day everyday is just getting a bit too much!!

A lot of people cook outside all year round even. I can’t say my clothes have ever smelt of bbq even if I’ve had a bbq and my own washing out. In fact I’m doing both right now.

We have also smoked/bbq Christmas dinner before.

Cooking outside is a choice.
Hanging washing out to dry is usually a necessity.

BBQ is usually a social activity and that's fine, everyone is entitled to have fun ..but it's a complete lack of respect to do it all the time and sod the neighbours because you only consider your own wants .

What if their washing disrupts my sunshine?

If you live surrounded by other people, you have to accept that they're going to live their lives and do things that annoy you, just like you're guaranteed to do things that annoy them.

If you want quiet you really need to live in an isolated area otherwise you need to accept neighbours do things differently to you.

I mean technically op clearly dries her washing elsewhere when it’s raining.

So neither are a necessity.

It's obnoxious to do what you want all of the time without any consideration of your neighbours.

Oh come on though, you can dry washing inside (airer/ tumble dryer). We have so few decent days in this country when you can eat outside, and if you live in a built up area someone’s always going to have their washing out.
