Neighbour bbq smoke

Heathershimmerwinner · 11/05/2025 15:54

Hi. My neighbour round the back has a raised bbq area. He has bbqs twice a day, not kidding. It’s getting a bit too much. The smell of the smoke is making me feel sick. We don’t get on with him as it is. So speaking to him is out the question. My washing constantly smells of smoke. I wouldn’t bother if he barbecued now and again. But it’s twice a day.

But OP if you're not willing to speak to him, you'll have to keep a log with evidence (smoke filled skies, soot covered washing) and complain to the council.
He's unlikely to stop of his own accord given how fond he is of his bbq.

What if their washing disrupts my sunshine?

If you live surrounded by other people, you have to accept that they're going to live their lives and do things that annoy you, just like you're guaranteed to do things that annoy them.

How would my washing annoy you?

It doesn't make a noise or smell and doesn't blow into your garden

Liondoesntsleepatnight · 11/05/2025 17:10

is there a way screening it off your side? So the smoke doesn’t come inside of the house?

Digdongdoo · 11/05/2025 17:10

BigHeadBertha · 11/05/2025 17:08

No, actually. Your rights end where mine begin. Get it now?

Not how it works. Sorry.

lol, special screen to disperse air borne smoke & particulate to prevent it wafting over a fence

It could block out my sunshine. That would annoy me.

OP's complaint is that her washing smells of smoke. My question is why does her desire to dry her washing in her garden trump his desire to use his BBQ?

Prove the damaging to health. How you going to substantiate that

For what smoke comes off a BBQ, it’s not really enough to be inhaled unless you’re stood right over it

your verbal drivel is pathetic, you know nothing about the history of my neighbour. His son was bullying my son years ago. Which this has nothing to do with. I’m complaining due to him barbecuing twice a day every day. If it was a different neighbour I’d still be annoyed. It’s bloody annoying and rude.

As you have no control over the BBQ OP and you won’t go and talk to him, you can only deal with your washing, depends if you work or not, out of the house, you could get clothes dryers which are lower down, or a rotary dryer you can get covers for them to help prevent the smoke getting on them, find the least smoky area if garden, get something rigged up there.

Or hang out washing early to be in before BBQ1
hang out between BBQ1 and BBQ2
or hang out overnight after BBQ2
or just take your chances!

It’s an annoyance but what exactly can the council do? I assume he doesn’t work?

It’s an expensive and unhealthy way to cook (if it’s smoky) twice a day, perhaps it’s just the novelty of the warm weather and it will fritter out soon.

It's obnoxious to do what you want all of the time without any consideration of your neighbours.

yes it it, our neighbours are like that. they have a bunch of people over every weekend, huge bbq, dozens of kids all ages running around shrieking until midnight. after school during the week they always bring other kids back from school and their backyard is more like a public playground. they also did extensive noisy dirty building works for 12 months out of 24.

we do a LOT of grinning and bearing and looking up properties on RM.

So you don’t like him then..it’s not just his excessive BBQing. Ultimately there’s nothing you can do about it so you’ll just have to put up with it. I think whinging about bbq smoke is equally as pathetic but there we go

But if there is nothing you can do about it you will have to let it go or it will wind you up all summer.
He and his family are aggressive, inconsiderate bullies, they exist all over, you are just unlucky to have one so near.

For what smoke comes off a BBQ, it’s not really enough to be inhaled unless you’re stood right over it

Prove that it is a damaging to health issue
Inhaling BBQ smoke is a predictable outcome of a BBQ

WillTheSHTFsoon · 11/05/2025 15:56

That's ridiculous. I had to rewash my laundry today as some twat 2 doors down decided to start a bonfire in their garden yesterday afternoon.

Could you report to the council? Obviously a BBQ is very different to a bonfire but there must be some reportable issue for something. Do they run a smoking business or similar? Twice a day seems ridiculous

We have a gas BBQ now so not so much of an issue, but when he had a standard coal type I always went and told the neighbors near us we were going to have one if they wanted to get their washing in, just seems like common courtesy. Funnily enough no-one ever bothered to do the same for us.

Holiday24 · 11/05/2025 17:19

I think putting up with barbecue smoke is just part of having neighbours, even if is it annoying.

Obviously his aggression is a problem though; it would be much easier to deal with if he was a reasonable person and then maybe you could come to some sort of compromise, or at least get the heads up so you know when to bring your washing in.

venus7 · 11/05/2025 17:19

faerietales · 11/05/2025 17:07

Well, by OP's definition they are - because she doesn't want people to BBQ when she has her washing out.

Why should your desire to line-dry trump someone else's desire to cook on their BBQ?

That's rather like comparing someone's desire to read in their garden with someone's desire to play loud music in their's. It's all a matter of considering what affect your actions have on others.

noodlesforme · 11/05/2025 17:19

bbq smoke twice a day is obnoxious, are you sure they don't do it to annoy you op?

maybe time to bring out the loud music or do you own huge bbq like have a hog on a spit when he's not doing his and invite loads of people

GoodCharl · 11/05/2025 17:19

You dont gave a leg to stand on. Hes not doing anything wrong. Yes its annoying but not anything you have grounds for any major dispute!

idk how the gardens are laid out but could you plant something along their side eg 50ft conifer trees? 🤭

noodlesforme · 11/05/2025 17:20

or you could get lots of chicken they are quite smelly and maybe a goat.

and a cockerel

viques · 11/05/2025 17:22

ThejoyofNC · 11/05/2025 16:10

Why should I? Heating the oven makes my hot kitchen even hotter. And there's also the fact that my neighbours are empty fields...

I do sympathise, it must be so hard having a kitchen without working windows or doors.

TooGoodToGoto · 11/05/2025 17:23

BrendaSmall · 11/05/2025 17:06

Yes, but not damaging to people’s health!!

I do not believe that BBQs damage people’s health!

But that's the point - neither trumps the other.

When I sit and read, I use earplugs or Loops to dull the noise. I wouldn't dream of telling the neighbours to turn their music down just to please me.

Ddakji · 11/05/2025 17:23

faerietales · 11/05/2025 16:02

Isn't it just as inconsiderate to expect your washing to trump someone else's desire to BBQ?

No.

faerietales · 11/05/2025 17:24

Ddakji · 11/05/2025 17:23

No.

Can you elaborate?

JustMyView13 · 11/05/2025 17:24

Don’t live near me then! We BBQ twice per day, and the only thing that stops us is the rain. We’ve gone through BBQ’ing until early November before. Love a BBQ 😋
