Neighbour bbq smoke

Heathershimmerwinner · 11/05/2025 15:54

Hi. My neighbour round the back has a raised bbq area. He has bbqs twice a day, not kidding. It’s getting a bit too much. The smell of the smoke is making me feel sick. We don’t get on with him as it is. So speaking to him is out the question. My washing constantly smells of smoke. I wouldn’t bother if he barbecued now and again. But it’s twice a day.

Are we talking breakfast and lunch? Lunch and dinner? Breakfast and dinner? Does he mix it up at all?

OP is almost certainly exaggerating

Boreded · 11/05/2025 20:48

Theroadt · 11/05/2025 20:40

Correct. He can be required to abate if it is a statutory nuisance. Longer term, thick bamboo screening will really help, but take a couple of years to establish

Bamboo roots are very invasive, my neighbours have lifted our large slab paving

Because the smell of washing doesn't taint everything for several gardens around, people don't have to go round shutting their windows so their house doesn't stink of next door's washing.....yes, it's inconsiderate.

But seeing the neighbours tighty whiteys could be enough to put you off your lunch, so would the bbq then trump the washing 😂

It may well be annoying and anti-social to live next to someone like OP's neighbour - but that doesn't mean it qualifies as a nuisance that the council can take action on.

The reason I suck it up when my neighbours are irritating is because I know I probably do things that piss them off as well. Unless they're going massively OTT and causing a real long-term issue, I just live with it. Just like they live with our dog barking sometimes, or us using a fire-pit, or DH using powertools to do DIY.

I would call having BBQs twice a day “massively OTT”.

tillyandmilly · 11/05/2025 21:01

Yuk! I hate barbecues - all that carcogenic burnt meat smell wafting over the fence - yuk glad I live in a flat!

It’s not just the washing is it, I can’t open the windows as the smoke gets in. It’s a lovely day. We all like our windows open when the weathers nice .plus sitting outside is a nightmare as the smoke is annoying. Just had thoracic surgery so the last thing I want is to breath in his mingling bbq fumes. That’s been 8 hours today it’s been burning. 🥵

You posted first at 4pm, where you said he BBQs twice a day. Now on this post 2.5 (ish) hours later you’re saying he’s been BBQing for 8 hours.

Strange you didn’t mention in your OP he’d been BBQing 5.5 hours today.

You may have got some different answers.

Ebeneser · 11/05/2025 21:10

No, because they are antisocial. Why should somebody have to constantly be on the receiving end of BBQ smoke when there are alternatives? Only an utter selfish twat (which I’m presuming you are) will continually inflict BBQ smoke onto their neighbours (and probably bang on about how other peoples washing doesn’t trump their right to a BBQ. Trouble is other people washing doesn’t negatively affect other peoples enjoyment of their own home does it?).

Zone2NorthLondon · 11/05/2025 21:55

newchapternewday · 11/05/2025 20:25

If smoke from a neighbouring property is affecting the enjoyment of your home, then environmental health can take action

Totally Incorrect - enjoyment isn’t a statutory measure that the LA enforces
There is not a national scale of enjoyment and if one’s enjoyment is breached the LA intervene

It sounds really shit and inconsiderate.

I’m sat here now in a boiling house with all the windows closed because some silly arse has lit an evening fire nearby. It’s all terraced houses here.

Totally understandable that people sometimes have a barbecue. It’s annoying if your washing needs re-washing as a one-off, but everyone is just trying to live in a small space. Some utter twat deciding to light an evening stinky fire that smells of petrol is not a delightful woodsmoke smell and means windows have to be closed. So selfish. And it is constant here. Washing often ruined during day. Windows have to be closed in the evening after a hot day. So the bloody washing I have had to try and dry inside on a lovely sunny day can’t have fresh air circulating around it either.

Your situation also sounds like a neighbour is being utterly selfish.

Duckponddiana · 11/05/2025 23:12

HotHoney · 11/05/2025 15:54

Well if you’re not willing to speak to him you’ll have to try and communicate telepathically.

Maybe smoke signals could work, but I doubt your neighbours would like two palls of smoke in the area 😄

snowmichael · 12/05/2025 07:57

faerietales · 11/05/2025 18:36

Lots of things are unreasonable but that doesn't mean they're a legal nuisance -there's a big difference.

The definition of 'legal nuisance' literally includes the word 'unreasonable'

Whatwaswrongwiththatusername · 12/05/2025 13:10

@Heathershimmerwinnercan you hang out overnight if you feel unable to speak to him? I mean, I know all about the spiders’ willies and being darked on, and it’ll be a pita having to change your routine, but is a bit of invisible spider willy juice better than smoke? 😄 unfortunately won’t help with the open windows thing, but at least it’ll be a temp solution for now, and presumably not such a problem with bad weather days, or by later in the year.

snowmichael · 12/05/2025 07:57

Yes, but the legal definition of what's unreasonable is very different to someone just finding their neighbour irritating.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 12/05/2025 13:27

Unfortunately there isn’t much you can do, the HA and EH won’t do anything as he isn’t doing anything wrong.

unfortunately you will need to adjust what you to, stewing on it won’t help you.

willitevergetwarm · 12/05/2025 14:06

We BBQ in our own garden with our own washing hanging out and it doesn't smell of BBQ.
It's sunny and people like to use their gardens but the country is full of people who think this should be banned
I love my garden and love having family round so the GC can play together in the garden

I’ve been wondering why you’re so intent on saying the OP should just suck it up. I see here you use a fire pit. Another extremely antisocial blight on neighbours. Hmm, I’ll bet you use it quite regularly too, right?

BananaSqueezer · 12/05/2025 19:31

NancyBellaDonna · 11/05/2025 18:33

BBQ cooking is a very unhealthy choice.

Carcinogenic chemicals called Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are generated when organic substances are burned. On a barbecue this includes the fats dripping down onto the wood or charcoal, as well as flames reaching the surface of the meat. The smoke from the burning heat source also covers the surface with PAHs, and build-up can occur in smoked foods at any temperature.

Heterocyclic amines (HCAs) are chemicals created when any meat — or poultry or fish — is cooked at a high temperature. Cooking food close to the coals, in a smoky environment or for prolonged periods, can create high levels of HCAs and PAHs in your food. In lab experiments, these chemicals have been found to be mutagenic — that is, they cause changes in DNA that may increase the risk of cancer.

Not exactly on a par with hanging laundry out, is it? Thanks for this informative post.

I’m with you, OP. Your neighbour is being highly unreasonable. Barbecuing twice a day polluting the environment is antisocial.

snowmichael · 16/05/2025 11:27

faerietales · 12/05/2025 13:21

Yes, but the legal definition of what's unreasonable is very different to someone just finding their neighbour irritating.

There is (with only a few exceptions) no legal definition of 'unreasonable'
Laws are written by lawyers to make work for lawyers
Civil cases (which this would be) are decided on the balance of probabilities
However, the first step for OP is to contact the local council

TheBigFactHunt · 16/05/2025 11:39

TheGreyQuail · 11/05/2025 16:52

Where we live the council will take action for excessive smoke or noise under section 79 of the Enviromental Act 1990, An abatement notice can be issued to offender/s.

You live in North Korea?

TheGreyQuail · 16/05/2025 14:42

Nope. That is on our council web site.

rosie1873 · 16/05/2025 17:56

Just wondering when they hang their washing out?

eastegg · 17/05/2025 22:48

faerietales · 11/05/2025 16:07

What if their washing disrupts my sunshine?

If you live surrounded by other people, you have to accept that they're going to live their lives and do things that annoy you, just like you're guaranteed to do things that annoy them.

What if their washing disrupts my sunshine?

Oh do stop talking bollocks. That would have to be one fuck of a tall washing pole to lift the washing so high it would block your sun.

Catladywithoutacat · 17/05/2025 23:07

This is awful, it should be limited to once a week and communal gardens not allowed. I think you can report to environmental health

Totallytoti · 18/05/2025 08:12

Good on your neighbour for making the most of this weather. Put your washing on at night then? How miserable are you op. Do you realise people live indoors most of the year and enjoying being out at home is such a treat. Funny how in some countries cooking outside is the norm.
