Neighbour bbq smoke

Heathershimmerwinner · 11/05/2025 15:54

Hi. My neighbour round the back has a raised bbq area. He has bbqs twice a day, not kidding. It’s getting a bit too much. The smell of the smoke is making me feel sick. We don’t get on with him as it is. So speaking to him is out the question. My washing constantly smells of smoke. I wouldn’t bother if he barbecued now and again. But it’s twice a day.

Get an industrial sized fan and put it by your laundry facing his garden. It will help to blow the smoke away.

I'd contact environmental health department at my local council to ask if its permitted or not

permitted? Of course it’s permitted. There isn’t a local authority guide to bbq in community

Inside as there's not much choice, but on a dry day it's necessary to dry clothes outside.

If you manage on rainy days, it's obviously not a "necessity" on dry days.

Heronwatcher · 11/05/2025 16:47

God some people are miserable buggers. It is not a necessity to dry washing outside otherwise we’d all be walking around in wet clothes between October- April. The weather in this country is foul for 8 months of the year. No one should be made to feel guilty for cooking a few sausages outside in the 3-4 months when we actually can enjoy ourselves a bit. Just dry your sodding socks on an indoor airer and stop moaning!

And I agree, the OP’s neighbour does sound a bit excessive but let’s remember the OP hasn’t said a word to him yet, plus there could be an explanation (kitchen being renovated etc).

Not if those things are harmful to people’s health. Smoke from coal BBQs is really harmful. In my area they are already banned from public spaces and strongly discouraged from being used in private gardens. If you have to, get a gas or electric bbq.

Biggest load of crap I’ve read!!!

FatherFrosty · 11/05/2025 16:49

I use the bbq a good 60% of nights in nice weather. It’s a dual gas and coal one. It’s gas 90% of that time and doesn’t produce any smoke really. the charcoal gets used if it’s a Sunday and something that really warrants it, and I only do it later in the afternoon as I know it’s a bit anti social.
even then, it shouldn’t produce that much smoke if your doing it right.

I don’t think there’s anything you can do. But he’s clearly a anti social dick

CopperWhite · 11/05/2025 16:50

This is just one of those things that comes with having neighbours. He’s just cooking.

Exactly, my local authority has put in their website that they will not investigate complaints about bbqs so there are clearly some dumb/crazy/entitled people out there. Next they’ll be calling the police because the smell of the bbq is ‘triggering’ their MH problems so they are being abused by the neighbours.

That’s more to do with wildfire risks

Eating BBQ food = not necessary

Hang up washing outside to dry = necessary.

It’s not necessary though because it can be hung up inside, we manage to do that in winter so it’s not like washing goes on the line or there’s no where to dry it for 4 months. Hanging washing outside is easier and the preferred option but not necessary

BringontheSuncream · 11/05/2025 16:52

ThejoyofNC · 11/05/2025 15:58

I do the majority of my cooking outside in this weather. Don't like it, don't put your washing out.

It's always good to have input from THE NEIGHBOUR FROM HELL

Zone2NorthLondon · 11/05/2025 16:43

this Isn’t an environmental health issue, local authority won’t act . Won’t meet threshold for intervention

Where we live the council will take action for excessive smoke or noise under section 79 of the Enviromental Act 1990, An abatement notice can be issued to offender/s.

Another lovely considerate neighbour.

Are you for real?

Heathershimmerwinner · 11/05/2025 16:53

No he’s not getting any renovations to his kitchen. Plus I would never speak to him about it as he’s a very aggressive man. So that’s out the question.
I don’t mind people having bbqs. Like I said. But twice a day is excessive. I have been sitting out the back and that’s all I can smell is smoke constantly. But my god there are some clowns on this thread!!

How do you think people in flats cope who have no garden or access to outdoor space to hang up clothes? Hanging up clothes in the garden is absolutely not a necessity, I haven't done it in over 10 years!

SplendidUtterly · 11/05/2025 16:53

I am getting flashbacks to when my old neighbours use to fire theirs up two/three times a day and i had to play the "run out and bring the washing in" game at any given time.
My sympathies OP!

FatherFrosty · 11/05/2025 16:53

It’s give and take having neighbours isn’t it. We could all park like twats, have bonfires, play loud music ALL the time. But most normal people are aware it’s not nice for other people so moderate their behaviour accordingly and expect the same respect back

this complete doughnut doesn’t think like that. Speaking to him is unlikely to improve things as he clearly doesn’t give a shit.

My tenancy says I’m not allowed to dry washing inside.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 11/05/2025 16:54

If you live in a smoke control area you have to use low volatile steam coal (if using coal). You need to check if you live in SCA first.

No it’s preferable but in no way is it necessary.

Why on earth have you decided it’s “necessary”.

Biggest load of crap I’ve read!!!

Let’s break this down
BBQ on the heath or in a park. Banned as a fire risk, damages the environment
BBQ own home, permitted

venus7 · 11/05/2025 16:56

faerietales · 11/05/2025 16:02

Isn't it just as inconsiderate to expect your washing to trump someone else's desire to BBQ?

No, because washing drying outside doesn't affect others; barbeques do.

TooGoodToGoto · 11/05/2025 16:56

FatherFrosty · 11/05/2025 16:54

So you take them to a laundrette to dry in the winter? So I presume the same can be done all year?

This post started off well and was interesting. Then the usual smart-arses came along, picking holes in everything, criticising everything and each trying to outdo the other with increasingly more stupid comments. Result? A potentially good post ruined.
I wish some people would grow up and shut up!

What have people said that's annoyed you so much?

BethDuttonYeHaw · 11/05/2025 16:57

he's not doing anything wrong so there’s nothing you can do but try speaking to him nicely and appealing to his better nature.
