Neighbour bbq smoke

Heathershimmerwinner · 11/05/2025 15:54

Hi. My neighbour round the back has a raised bbq area. He has bbqs twice a day, not kidding. It’s getting a bit too much. The smell of the smoke is making me feel sick. We don’t get on with him as it is. So speaking to him is out the question. My washing constantly smells of smoke. I wouldn’t bother if he barbecued now and again. But it’s twice a day.

I do the majority of my cooking outside in this weather. Don't like it, don't put your washing out.

And yet, this kind of me, me, me attitude is exactly the problem, isn't it.

When people live together in close quarters, decent people don't only think of themselves and tell those they are creating problems for to f-off, do they.

Where we live the council will take action for excessive smoke or noise under section 79 of the Enviromental Act 1990, An abatement notice can be issued to offender/s.

Key word being excessive
as I said it needs to exceed nuisance threshold
domestic bbq won’t meet nuisance threshold

Heathershimmerwinner · 11/05/2025 16:53

No he’s not getting any renovations to his kitchen. Plus I would never speak to him about it as he’s a very aggressive man. So that’s out the question.
I don’t mind people having bbqs. Like I said. But twice a day is excessive. I have been sitting out the back and that’s all I can smell is smoke constantly. But my god there are some clowns on this thread!!

Why are they clowns? Because they don’t agree with you?

AIBU yes
OP you’re a clown

What are you intending to say to environmental health?

faerietales · 11/05/2025 16:59

venus7 · 11/05/2025 16:56

No, because washing drying outside doesn't affect others; barbeques do.

It is affecting others when you want them to stop using their own garden for normal summer activities.

Arguably, it's more " me me me" to tell people how they can and can't cook, in their own gardens, on the rare days we have enough weather.

It's not for you to decide that bbq-ing twice a day and smoking up the neighbors' laundry isn't an excessive nuisance. It seems to me it definitely is.

Unless they live their life in total silence, every single person on this thread will do something that pisses their neighbours off.

Getting yourself het up about it is a total waste of energy.

What a wanker. I assume people will start crapping in your BBQ to return your attitude.

Depends, our council is quite robust on a lot of things like this, especially noise.

FatherFrosty · 11/05/2025 17:01

TooGoodToGoto · 11/05/2025 16:56

So you take them to a laundrette to dry in the winter? So I presume the same can be done all year?

ah yes. That’s good for the bank balance and environment.

it’s give and take for neighbourly relations

if this fella was just cooking his dinner. The op could get hers dried during the day. But twice a day means she can’t. So he’s taking but not giving.

Seems to you? You’re not the LA, you don’t determine the threshold for excessive. Your indignation doesn’t render the BBQ excessive

Lots of my neighbours have bbqs all summer long, there is a bit smoke but nothing excessive, basically the op doesn’t like this particular neighbour & wants to get one over on him by reporting him for something & is clutching at straws with the bbq. Making her sick fgs 🙄

It's always good to have input from THE NEIGHBOUR FROM HELL

You think BBQing makes someone a NEIGHBOUR FROM HELL?

I’m not sure you’ve got that right…

It wouldn't be MN without a good dose of hyperbole on a Sunday afternoon!

Noise, yes the LA has equipment to monitor and powers to intervene? However LA need evidence of the noise and that it persisted when asked to decrease

I’m sure the washing will dry between lunch and dinner….

Four hours?

Plenty of time on a sunny day.

Because it affects others. Stopping them out of consideration for others. No body is affected by laundry being hung outside.

HotHoney · 11/05/2025 15:54

Well if you’re not willing to speak to him you’ll have to try and communicate telepathically.

Or with smoke signals. 😁

BrendaSmall · 11/05/2025 17:06

Zone2NorthLondon · 11/05/2025 16:56

Let’s break this down
BBQ on the heath or in a park. Banned as a fire risk, damages the environment
BBQ own home, permitted

Yes, but not damaging to people’s health!!

faerietales · 11/05/2025 17:07

venus7 · 11/05/2025 17:05

Well, by OP's definition they are - because she doesn't want people to BBQ when she has her washing out.

Why should your desire to line-dry trump someone else's desire to cook on their BBQ?

Zone2NorthLondon · 11/05/2025 17:07

BrendaSmall · 11/05/2025 17:06

Prove the damaging to health. How you going to substantiate that

No, actually. Your rights end where mine begin. Get it now?

UndermyShoeJoe · 11/05/2025 17:09

I believe there are more areas that ban washing outside than bbqs to be fair.

Look at those HOA in America and flats in the U.K. told they cannot dry on their balcony.

Anyway you either complain or you accept it. Complaining online but refusing to do anything in real will always make you unreasonable.
