To be getting second hand embarrassment because my DH is wearing sandals!

For the first time since I’ve known him, my 43 year old DH has bought himself some sandals. I don’t know why but they make me cringe. I think sandals on men look so naff and ‘old man’.

I’ve put a photo of the pair he has bought on this post.

AIBU or do they look really naff and embarrassing?!

I don’t care what DH wears as long as he’s warm/cool and comfortable. Sandals with or without socks is fine with me.

However, I also don’t give a fig for what’s considered fashionable and haven’t since I was about 14yrs old.

What amazes me more is fully grown adults still trying to ‘fit in’ and frightened to be singled out as uncool. Why would you care? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Why wouldn't you care what you looked like?

Headingtowardsdivorce · 10/05/2025 21:24

They're fine so long as he's not got socks on too. So much better than boaty slip ons 🤢

DrCoconut · 10/05/2025 21:24

BakelikeBertha · 10/05/2025 19:54

I think you're being unreasonable OP, why shouldn't men have their feet open and get some fresh air on them? Much better than stinky, sweaty socks at the end of the day.

My ex used to wear these with socks.

TheodoraCrumpet · 10/05/2025 21:25

I don't think I have ever looked at a man's feet and thought, wow, great shoes. Or indeed, fuck, awful shoes. How can someone else's shoes be embarrassing? They're not on your feet.

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 10/05/2025 21:26

bigboykitty · 10/05/2025 20:09

Truly awful. Worse than crocs.

Nothing is worse than crocs.
YANBU OP.

I'd be mightily pissed off if my DH told me not to wear a pair of shoes because they are 'embarrassing'.

They might not be to your taste, but you aren't the one wearing them.

Agree. Although it's much more likely that my DH wouldn't wear them because he'd be embarrassed. Despite being 54, he won't wear PJs or jumpers either.

DrCoconut · 10/05/2025 21:30

zenai · 10/05/2025 20:27

I feel for you. I vetoed some very ugly sandals last year, god they were awful. The compromise was deck shoes no socks (anchors aweigh lol), light trainers, and sliders for the pool/garden/beach. No divorce yet.

Deck shoes are divorce material. They remind me of my dodgy landlord back in the 90s. He also used to wear his sunglasses up on his head rather than on his eyes. What's the correct name for that, like an Alice band?

Why wouldn't you care what you looked like?

Not caring about the latest fashions doesn't mean you don't care what you look like 🙄

Roxietrees · 10/05/2025 21:31

Oh god sorry OP but they’re horrendous! But also your post is really making me laugh 🤣🤣 sorry. You’re in a tough spot! Depending on how sensitive your DH is about stuff like this I’d just be honest and tell him that maybe they aren’t the best choice…maybe you could look together for some flip flops instead? Yes less practical but at least they’re not these sandals 😬

Pinkbakewell · 10/05/2025 21:32

@Roxietrees
I have told him. He said he doesn’t care as they’re comfortable and he wants to wear them for walking too.

MoralHighGroundGrandWizard · 10/05/2025 21:32

I have the women’s version of these. Yeah they’re not stylish but they are comfy and perfect for my long summer walks and time spent outside. They also cover my toes so i get the benefit of wearing sandals in the heat but never stub my toe! YABU but im biased hahaha

Lincslady53 · 10/05/2025 21:32

Well, according to DH, all you sandal haters are unfashionable. He got thus from Google, so it must be true

'Socks and sandals, once considered a fashion faux pas, have become a popular trend, embraced by both men and women. The trend gained traction during the COVID-19 pandemic when comfort trumped style, and people wore socks with sandals at home. Now, it's a stylish choice, particularly for cooler summer evenings or as a casual weekend look. '

PyongyangKipperbang · 10/05/2025 21:33

Given that I cannot wear sandals this summer as I have developed the double whammy of ahtletes foot and a fungal nail infection....lovely....I nominate @Pinkbakewell
DH to wear them on my behalf!

Moveoverdarlin · 10/05/2025 21:34

No way would I allow him to wear them. Maybe if he was 80 and going on a coach trip. No way!!

Picklechicken · 10/05/2025 21:36

I think you’re all insane.

They’re nice, very inoffensive and quite trendy. Men’s sandals are fashionable. And even if they weren’t so what- if he’s comfy and cool does it matter?

If you go onto asos and look in the men’s new section in shoes there are masses of sandals, with lots of “likes” (ie saved in baskets).

But - disclaimer- my dh (38) lives in crocs. He’s very outdoorsy and loves gardening. But he wears them all the time. Everywhere!

Allow? What sort of relationship do you have, where you get to refuse permission for any clothing items not to your taste? Yuck.

Shadowsunray · 10/05/2025 21:38

Maybe he finds what you wear naff and old lady. I think sandals on men are fine. Those aren't the ones I would choose for my husband but I'd be fine if he liked them.

Weird thing to say. Why wouldn’t you care? It’s perfectly normal for a grown adult to care about fashion and to present themselves in a way they feel aligns with the type of person they are. The world would be a very boring place if we all wore an identical uniform. It’s not about worrying about being “uncool” LOL. It’s just about not giving up on life and wearing a baggy old t shirt (and these sandals) for the rest of your life. The man’s only 43!

ClockwatchingClara · 10/05/2025 21:42

I'm with you op. I hate to see men in sandals, it's on the same level as men with long finger nails for me.

Pinkbakewell · 10/05/2025 21:44

He’s been wearing ‘outdoor’ clothing since we first met, and I’ve got used to that over the years.

However, this seems a step too far!

OP posts:
Agapornis · 10/05/2025 21:44

It's a hiking/walking sandal - surely he doesn't want to wear them out very quickly? Save them for hiking! 😇😉

What about some nice leather flipflops or Birkenstocks?

AubernFable · 10/05/2025 21:50

In my relationship I’m the one taking the fashion advice, he’s very much the fashionista and I grew up on a farm but I would not be going anywhere with anyone (male) wearing those.

Maybe acceptable for a proper outdoorsy, ‘I don’t care what it looks like if i’m comfortable’, lady that likes to hike but I never want to see that much of a mans foot exposed.

Topseyt123 · 10/05/2025 21:50

I have some of those. Very comfortable.

I also have a couple of pairs of crocs and one pair of Birkenstocks.

BigSkies2022 · 10/05/2025 21:52

Does he look after his feet? no hairy toes or crusty heels? no nasty yellow toenails? I mean, that's the point, isn't it? for all of us, male or female, when we get our legs and feet out in warmer weather.

Buy him some cool Birkenstocks and then he’ll look all hippy and ironic then you’ll both be happy. Otherwise offer them to the dog to “play with’ one night…
