To be getting second hand embarrassment because my DH is wearing sandals!

For the first time since I’ve known him, my 43 year old DH has bought himself some sandals. I don’t know why but they make me cringe. I think sandals on men look so naff and ‘old man’.

I’ve put a photo of the pair he has bought on this post.

AIBU or do they look really naff and embarrassing?!

They are pretty awful. I hate seeing peoples trotters during the summer. My feet don’t get that hot unless in boots. Hopefully he doesn’t have dry fungal feet. Many men neglect their feet.

zenai · 10/05/2025 20:27

I feel for you. I vetoed some very ugly sandals last year, god they were awful. The compromise was deck shoes no socks (anchors aweigh lol), light trainers, and sliders for the pool/garden/beach. No divorce yet.

Growlybear83 · 10/05/2025 20:28

It’s none of your business what your husband is wearing. What would you say if he told you that he was embarrassed by something you were wearing?

JimmyGrimble · 10/05/2025 20:28

You’re lucky. My partner wears DMs on the beach. I just ignore it. Who cares?

NONE OF HER BUSINESS? What her husband wears?!

First of all - of course it's her business. And she's allowed an opinion on whatever she likes. And because he's her husband she's allowed to voice that. He is of course allowed to ignore that, as I do, when I wear my comfy work shoes that my husband thinks are ugly af.

rwalker · 10/05/2025 20:30

There fine he’s just bought them 20 too early

ttcat37 · 10/05/2025 20:31

They’re revolting, my fanny would heal over.

Kibble29 · 10/05/2025 20:34

PuppiesProzacProsecco · 10/05/2025 20:12

My fanny snapped shut when that picture loaded.

YANBU OP. Those are passion killers of the first order. Boke.

Haha! This!

Tobleroneswillbemyundoing · 10/05/2025 20:34

They are a MUCH better than this fashion for men wearing sliders these past few years....

momager1 · 10/05/2025 20:40

my husband LIVES in his birkenstocks. He has an indoor pair and several outdoor pairs, Only time I see him in shoes is if we are dressing up for something which is rare. The birks have healed his plantar fasciitis. We have tile floors thru out the house so he needs them indoors as well. That being said , we live in the Dominican Republic and it is hot as balls most days. Right now it is 31 degrees, so I also mainly wear birks in the house, and pretty sandals when out.

potplants · 10/05/2025 20:43

I was raised in flip flops.
Still have flip flops.
Parents gran parents all wore flip flop winter and summer.
We are just a family that never liked shoes.

Endofyear · 10/05/2025 20:43

That's really shallow 😕 I couldn't care less what DH wears as long as he is comfortable! Why would you be embarrassed? His clothing choices are nothing to do with you!

Onthemaintrunkline · 10/05/2025 20:44

Of all the things to be worried about, your husbands sandals wouldn’t even make the list! They are absolutely fine…worn to a formal wedding maybe not lol, but they are fine.

SunnyViper · 10/05/2025 20:46

Keens re a great walking sandal. I’ve a couple of pairs and don’t give a shit what people think. They are really comfy and have a great sole for summer hiking and generally pottering around.

Thistooshallpass. · 10/05/2025 20:18

No 15 year should be subjected to this !

Mine only cares about comfort (autistic).

flowertoday · 10/05/2025 20:48

Nobody cares generally about what anyone wears. The older I get the more I realise this.
Sandals are great in hot weather.

I am surprised some folk think they are unmanly. Is it more manly to have hot feet or something 🤔
No wonder gender politics is a mess if there are rules like this.....

At least he's not wearing crocs.

Never a truer word spoken. Though OP my dad wears those sandals your DH has got. He's 67 though🤭

GotToWearShades · 10/05/2025 20:48

So what I want to know is, what other kinds of male sandals out there are acceptable? Birkenstock type things spring to mind, but they are normally mules/clogs/backless. Sliders, esp with socks are comical and backless. Deck shoes aren't sandals and have become acceptable now but were old golfing and sailing posho shoes.

Kago2790 · 10/05/2025 20:50

I wear sandals like this for cycling to and from work. Birkenstock otherwise from April to October.

MoominMai · 10/05/2025 20:50

@Pinkbakewell if worn with jeans/long trousers then 🤢 but if with shorts/t shirt then 👍

Jen579 · 10/05/2025 20:52

I couldn't get upset about hiking sandals, but they look better on some people than others IMO. Also depends what he wears with them.

This! I'm glad my DH isn't shallow and judgemental as I live in pink Crocs!

Beautifulweeds · 10/05/2025 20:53

Women wear sandals, why shouldn't men?

They look like summer walking shoes, lots of hiking men have them.

But really, who cares, the only people will give a f##k will be shallow and judgemental.

Having lived abroad and an eyelid was never battered when bank managers wore them, my mind opened up to why not.

Hate the stupid and pathetic societial 'norms' about what is cringe. Who really does care???

Shatteredallthetimelately · 10/05/2025 20:53

Lots of people wear this kind of shoe.

Your DH has chosen footwear he feels will be comfortable for his feet.

There may be items in your wardrobe/shoe collection that your DH isn't so keen on.

Pinkbakewell · 10/05/2025 20:17

@mrssunshinexxx

He’s into walking and running and they’re a walking sandal apparently 😭

Then in his defence it makes sense.

I wouldn’t be wanting them on a nice date night tho.
