To be getting second hand embarrassment because my DH is wearing sandals!

For the first time since I’ve known him, my 43 year old DH has bought himself some sandals. I don’t know why but they make me cringe. I think sandals on men look so naff and ‘old man’.

I’ve put a photo of the pair he has bought on this post.

AIBU or do they look really naff and embarrassing?!

I'm with you @Pinkbakewell, so vile!

Send him some pictures of acceptable sandals and then buy the ones he likes that are acceptable.

He's bought his own that he finds acceptable..

You mean find a pair that the OP herself finds acceptable for him to wear.

TheSmallAssassin · 10/05/2025 21:00

Ooh, I've got Keen walking sandals, they're great, very practical, especially on the beach (I walk straight into the sea in them)

My husband is much fussier than I am about footwear, so I can't see him ever buying any, though he does own sandals. I like him in anything.

loulouljh · 10/05/2025 21:01

Hideous.

They are pretty awful. I hate seeing peoples trotters during the summer. My feet don’t get that hot unless in boots. Hopefully he doesn’t have dry fungal feet. Many men neglect their feet.

And this is why I often find men’s feet a bit cringe. So many men just do not take care of their feet. Hard skin, hairy toes, toenails that haven’t seen clippers since 1972. Grim. Not all men, of course, but many.

Radionowhere · 10/05/2025 21:04

They're ugly but probably very comfy. Leave him be.

CheeseAndChipsAndCurry · 10/05/2025 21:04

They are not pretty that I agree, but they look comfy and Im hoping he doesnt wear socks with them. I wear some fugly walking sandals. Not a style statement, but I can walk for miles in them, and I dont care what people think. Its my feet, also they hurt in the wrong shoes.

Hollietree · 10/05/2025 21:05

Oh god no 🙈 I’d be mortified if my husband bought those.

The only sandals acceptable for a man are plain flipflops.

MumWifeOther · 10/05/2025 21:06

I mean.. bless him, they are awful 😂 my husband is the same age and thankfully not here yet. He wears sliders to the beach, rest of the time trainers!

LeaveTaking · 10/05/2025 21:06

You must have missed the Shandal thread…

midlifeattheoasis · 10/05/2025 21:07

They are absolutely hideous.

My thoughts are with you @Pinkbakewell

Scissor · 10/05/2025 21:08

He's being sensible. You're being judgemental for completely shallow reasons.. Though he's bought a great brand so they're going to last for comfortable walking for years and years and years.
Who looks at the feet of middle aged men anyway?
You're only projecting your own desirability stakes stuff.. He's getting old and so are you.

Redpeach · 10/05/2025 21:09

Lets see your sandals

Seeyousoonboo · 10/05/2025 21:09

DH is 58 and wears Birkenstock sandals. If he bought those hideous sandals I wouldn't be seen out with him.

ForestFox44 · 10/05/2025 21:09

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Pancakeflipper · 10/05/2025 21:10

Wear sunglasses when out with him and a false moustache. No one will stare at his feet then.

Cringing with you, my DP has similar sandals . He's also taking to wearing walking trousers even when not going out walking because they are 'comfy'.

FuckityFux · 10/05/2025 21:11

I don’t care what DH wears as long as he’s warm/cool and comfortable. Sandals with or without socks is fine with me.

However, I also don’t give a fig for what’s considered fashionable and haven’t since I was about 14yrs old.

What amazes me more is fully grown adults still trying to ‘fit in’ and frightened to be singled out as uncool. Why would you care? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Eenameenadeeka · 10/05/2025 21:12

You're being incredibly unreasonable. Has he ever said he's embarrassed by what you are wearing?

AgnesX · 10/05/2025 21:12

Get him a pedicure and you'll be fine 👣

LasagneLasagne · 10/05/2025 21:14

I'd be mightily pissed off if my DH told me not to wear a pair of shoes because they are 'embarrassing'.

They might not be to your taste, but you aren't the one wearing them.

DiscoBeat · 10/05/2025 21:16

YABU, unless there are socks in the picture as well, if so LTB!

Houseshmouse · 10/05/2025 21:16

What's the sock situation with these bad boys? Socks or no socks?

Either way, YANBU!!

ChannelLightVessel · 10/05/2025 21:20

I wear Keen walking sandals, and so does DD (16). They are incredibly comfortable and hard-wearing. I do have some smarter sandals as well. I would never wear Birkenstock, sliders etc. because I have narrow feet, and they would just fall off.

Justgorgeous · 10/05/2025 21:22

Get him a pair of Birkenstocks.

crackofdoom · 10/05/2025 21:23

Pinkbakewell · 10/05/2025 20:17

@mrssunshinexxx

He’s into walking and running and they’re a walking sandal apparently 😭

They are horrible, it's true. But it's near impossible to find an attractive pair of walking sandals, so you should give him a pass for that one. Just beware of mission creep- "Pub garden with friends? I'll wear my walking sandals. City break? Walking sandals". They should only be worn a minimum of a mile from the nearest tarmac.

ScarletWitchM · 10/05/2025 21:23

mens sandals are pretty awful in general but these are quite ugly. I’d feel the same as you! But then my DH doesn’t get some of the stuff I wear (Birkenstocks) so I couldn’t really say much if it was me!!
