To be getting second hand embarrassment because my DH is wearing sandals!

For the first time since I’ve known him, my 43 year old DH has bought himself some sandals. I don’t know why but they make me cringe. I think sandals on men look so naff and ‘old man’.

I’ve put a photo of the pair he has bought on this post.

AIBU or do they look really naff and embarrassing?!

Lol only in UK or do you never go to other parts of the world?

Your limited social circle and lack of foreign travel is your problem.

There are none in my social circle

I'm pretty certain there are no Reform voters in mine- does that mean they don't exist?

To be clear that was replying to Tristan not FedupofArsenalgame

I have those in blue… bought them when I was 22.

Don’t put words in my mouth, that’s just rude!

I never said no men wear sandals, did I?

DogsOnFilm · 13/05/2025 18:49

I think more men would be a ‘laughing stock’ if their friends knew they were on mumsnet, usually hanging around the sex board, far more so than wearing sandals.

minnienono · 13/05/2025 18:51

Loom perfectly fine to me, but no socks!!!

minnienono · 13/05/2025 18:53

None of you people who haven’t seen men in sandals have ever been to Bristol have you? Half the men in the pub last weekend were in shorts and sandals, the other half had crocs, flip flops or deck shoes on

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 13/05/2025 19:16

A man in my office, in the UK, was wearing sandals today and some of you might have to sit down for this, with socks. He's actually one of the most stylish men in the office.

I guess it all boils down to how stylish the person is. You've got to be intentional about things. But not everything works for everyone, unfortunately. I saw Emily in Paris, and I just loved Emily's outfits, but I'd never be able to pull them off.
That's why some fashion specialists suggest doing some style tests in order to find out what your personal style is. Which I know is not necessarily the case with this thread, but that might be what's bothering OP, the style dissonance the sandals have created.

Do you not mean he once was ….
😬

MiniCoopers · 13/05/2025 20:52

I don’t think they’re that bad. I like a sandal, many women do. Why shouldn’t men? How does he wear them?

Growuppeople · 13/05/2025 20:57

He can wear what he wants as can you! Wtf is going on here. What would be acceptable for you then!? Buy him something you want if it’s that much of an issue

Dangermoo · 13/05/2025 20:58

They aren't the worst men's sandals tbf.

What a shame for men. I hate winter because of all the putting on socks and lacing shoes faff that has to go on before leaving the house. As soon as I won’t get frostbite I’m in sandals or clogs, no socks. Why shouldn’t men have the same freedom?

They can, just not in what op shared ideally 😂

Do you now what I reckon? People should stop thinking so deeply. Wear what makes you happy. Style tests? WTF?

They’re horrible? Would be equally horrible on a woman so not exclusive to men

Question is, does he, or would he, ever police what you wear? On your feet or elsewhere? Ultimately it really is none of your business. I get that you can feel anyway that you do, but it’s purely his business. I think men have fewer options re shoes, especially in the summer, and sandals are just summer shoes that are cooler and more comfortable to wear. Would you prefer trainers with socks? Women wear sandals and men wear sandals. With respect, you just need to get over it, and if you’re shallow enough to be embarrassed by him then that’s a you problem. Unless he asks you for help/advice with summer footwear I think you need to just step back. It would be like him asking/expecting you to wear 4 inch stiletto heals all year round, or something else just as ridiculous.

Whatwaswrongwiththatusername · 15/05/2025 15:46

And I actually find the alternative of “sliders” even more cringe, tbh. They look awful on anyone and just reminds me of kids in tracksuits hanging around. Or worse, white socks, sliders and shorts!! Sliders are fine at the beach or pool etc, but to wear as everyday shoes? Especially with aforementioned socks? Yeah…nope. But even then if my other half took to wearing those as everyday footwear in the summer I’d probably take the piss but let him get in with it. And, fwiw, I’m also not keen on his summer sandals, and still might tease occasionally, I got over that years ago and accept that’s his choice and nothing to do with me. I also did happen to buy him sliders once for something in particular and they will get used on the rare time they’re appropriate - hot tub, spa, etc - but I’m just thankful that he doesn’t wear them any other time. Sandals are the lesser of two evils, imo, but again would be his choice. Luckily he would never do the socks and sandals thing (phew!) and neither would he ever do the socks and sliders thing, on the very rare occasion those are worn.
