To be getting second hand embarrassment because my DH is wearing sandals!

For the first time since I’ve known him, my 43 year old DH has bought himself some sandals. I don’t know why but they make me cringe. I think sandals on men look so naff and ‘old man’.

I’ve put a photo of the pair he has bought on this post.

AIBU or do they look really naff and embarrassing?!

@Pinkbakewell, you should see the new ones my DH has just bought…these are very stylish in comparison. The chaps do need to feel cool and comfy in the heat though…even so, I feel your pain 😀

DogsOnFilm · 10/05/2025 21:55

It ok to not like the, but why would you be embarrassed? That seems very immature.

NannyPlum7 · 10/05/2025 21:55

I agree with you OP. A man in sandals gives me the actual ick. My husband will wear them on holiday regardless of my ick, as is his right. He doesn’t tend to wear them here (but we live in Scotland so you only get like 3 days of sandal weather per year anyway)

pictoosh · 10/05/2025 21:55

Personally speaking, I think deck shoes are much worse.
Deck shoes are a wanker's shoe.

I like an outdoorsy man. Walking sandals are fine.

GreenFressia · 10/05/2025 21:57

I don't love the colour. Style is meh.

I had a boyfriend who wore socks, trainers and shorts. I once went shopping with him, thinking ah this is my chance. Five minutes I left him and he'd bought another pair of shorts. I tried to explain in a gentle way. It didn't go down well. He gave me a handmade birthday card with a picture of him wearing shorts and socks 😂 The only way you can really get round it (honestly I've observed this work with my DF 😂) is to buy their clothes for them.

I think you're being unreasonable OP, why shouldn't men have their feet open and get some fresh air on them? Much better than stinky, sweaty socks at the end of the day.

Those sandals will absolutely reek at the end of a day out. Vile.

KnittyNell · 10/05/2025 21:59

There are some VERY controlling posters on here!

But women's sandals don't?
What do you mean?

NannyPlum7 · 10/05/2025 22:00

I saw a young Gen Z couple in matching socks and sandals the other day. Nike socks. It’s a bold look.

Those synthetic material sandals are all but enclosed. A bare foot in a synthetic all-but-enclosed shoe will stink if they get hot.

I’m not being a twat, I have experience of these shoes. Not on my own feet of course.

Oh god. I can still smell it. Just sour bacteria-y feet.

A more open sandal, a Birky or a flip flop don’t cause quite so much sweating.

I’m not bringing the sex of the wearer into it, by the way.

vipersnest1 · 10/05/2025 22:03

My XH hated me showing my toes - it didn’t stop me wearing the footwear I wanted on my feet.

Allow? What sort of relationship do you have, where you get to refuse permission for any clothing items not to your taste? Yuck.

My relationship is wonderful, childhood sweethearts, don’t really fight, best friends, love each other unconditionally etc.

If you can’t tell your life partner the truth, and roast them when they look dumb, why bother? My DH has said ‘I’m not going out with you dressed like THAT!’ but it wasn’t because it was ‘too sexy’ or something gross but because I looked “home educated”. I think there’s a pretty big gap between controlling what your partner wears and saying they’re embarrassing you because you’re dressed weird.

As long as they’re a supportive partner and will still love you and treat you with respect however you’re dressed- they can have an opinion because a couple represent each other.

Weirdly enough I’ve seen a lot of young couples wearing matching trainers / sandals. Seems to be a thing!

Mmmm19 · 10/05/2025 22:06

Sandals on holiday / really hot fine. But I personally do not like walking style sandals - there are other much more attractive comfy options (for men and women)

Superhansrantowindsor · 10/05/2025 22:06

Yanbu to find the sandals unattractive but I wouldn’t be embarrassed about them.

Sweet Jesus…. Represent each other Confused
I’m very happily married myself, but we certainly haven’t fused into one being, I genuinely can’t think of anything more suffocating.
But it obviously works for you 🤷🏻‍♀️

Maia77 · 10/05/2025 22:08

These are not sandals.

This. If the roles were reversed and the OPs DH was dictating what footwear he'd allow her to wear then 100% this thread would be full of red flags and LTB.

RobertaFirmino · 10/05/2025 22:10

I could easily disregard these sandals if actually out in the countryside on a good, long walk. Their correct purpose. As a style/fashion choice though? Oh hell no!

They are preferable to the deck shoe/no sock thing though. No socks at all? Not even a liner? Christ almighty, those shoes must stink!

Dramatic · 10/05/2025 22:11

Oof yeah they're rank. My DH has some questionable fashion choices, I let him off though cos I love him

Ah I see. Righto - I had a pair of Keens in the past but I used to rinse them out on the regular so they never smelled bad.

Glad you're not being a twat - ha ha. 😄

XiCi · 10/05/2025 22:16

They are disgusting. I wouldn't be seen with anyone wearing them. I'd honestly think it was a joke if DH came home with them. They'd find their way into the bin pretty quickly

Ihmppmmwtbwote · 10/05/2025 22:06

Actually how rude is my DH is the more relevant question. The answer is sometimes quite, but it was hilarious and very accurate so I couldn’t say anything.

I’d like to add I was home educated for a time and grew up with lots of home educated people. None of them would care about me saying this or my husbands joke, its pretty accepted.
