To be getting second hand embarrassment because my DH is wearing sandals!

For the first time since I’ve known him, my 43 year old DH has bought himself some sandals. I don’t know why but they make me cringe. I think sandals on men look so naff and ‘old man’.

I’ve put a photo of the pair he has bought on this post.

AIBU or do they look really naff and embarrassing?!

I don't think sandals or flip flops in general are bad, but if my other half got this particular kind of sandals I'd sarcastically say "Oh cool, when's the trek booked for?" And tell him I thought they were gross 😅

sidebirds · 11/05/2025 18:39

hideous! 🤢 LTB

scalt · 11/05/2025 18:40

I like to wear sandals like that, and my DH does too. Sometimes I wear trainers without socks if I feel like it, so shoot me!

emanresu3 · 11/05/2025 19:05

I wouldnt' date a man that wouldn't wear sandals. My son-inlaw refuses to despite sky high temperatures. What an idiot.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 11/05/2025 19:10

I’m sitting in the garden in full view of any neighbour who looks out of their window wearing pink crocs and navy striped socks! DH is barbecuing and doesn’t seem remotely bothered by my fashion choices!

Elspeth7 · 11/05/2025 19:13

Yep afraid I do think YABU. In fact I don't even think those particular sandals are that bad/ unfashionable. I've definitely seen worse on men younger than your husband.
I often think my husband's fashion sense is terrible, but he's stubborn and perhaps rightly so. He likes what he likes and shouldn't have to ask my permission! Let him be himself and wear what he likes.

Bustabloodvessel · 11/05/2025 19:14

I wouldn’t be seen in public with my husband if he wore those, they are so gitty, proper old man shoes

Zoec1975 · 11/05/2025 19:14

I don’t like sandals on men at all but these are ok to me and more modern that i thought you were going to post.

Pinkbakewell · 11/05/2025 19:26

I’ve told him what I think and he said he doesn’t care and no one else does, it’s just a me thing. This thread proves otherwise!

Give me his number, I’ll put him right - he’s behaving like a prize tosser, just awful - I don’t know any man who’d even contemplate wearing sandals, WTF is wrong with him??

What is wrong with you??
Are you ok?

Bikergran · 11/05/2025 19:33

YABU. His feet, his choice. As long as his toenails and feet are not unkempt (send him to a chiropodist if they are).

He is right. You are the only one who cares here.

While others in this thread expressed different opinions about the shoes in general, noone else cares specifically about your husband's footwear.

Again, that’s an issue of not wearing appropriate shoes for the environment. If they’re hiking in fields etc then they need hiking shoes.

Part of the problem was debris getting in the sandals though. As in its not just a me problem, MIL had the afore mentioned dog poo incident on the way to the train station before the hike. Blisters was another issue.

So long as his feet are clean and his nails properly trimmed it doen't matter

Theorderoftime · 11/05/2025 20:38

Ugh, those sandals are the worst. Total turnoff. And sure, maybe it’s a bit unreasonable to judge someone based on their footwear but hey, we’re human. I just couldn’t get past it.

I spent years trying to make peace with my ex’s faintly revolting sartorial choices. The relief I felt when we split was immense. These days, I thoroughly enjoy being able to look at my DH with appreciation.

I vote for the sandals mysteriously disappearing. Lose one down the back of the sofa. Accidentally bin them. Leave them in the garden for the foxes to chew. Nature will take its course.

pollymere · 11/05/2025 20:56

They look perfectly acceptable male summer footwear. I thought you meant Clarks circa 1975 type!

Towwanthustice · 11/05/2025 21:08

As long as he doesn't wear socks with them lol. I think they look fine

Dogsbreath7 · 11/05/2025 21:27

Only if he is wearing socks.😬

Does the sandals actually being fashionable, at the moment, sway you at all? Not in that you're therefore obliged to like them, but that they're increasingly popular among younger men (including the particular brand/shoe that your DH has). You might see them as "old man" but, clearly, they are not.

Cariadm · 11/05/2025 21:36

JaneJeffer · 10/05/2025 19:56

They’re not sandals

What are they then? 🙄

SeriousTissues · 11/05/2025 21:36

What the heck do you want him to wear on his feet in the summer?

TheChosenTwo · 11/05/2025 21:39

Oh dear god I’m not surprised op, they are hideous and I would die of embarrassment if dh started wearing anything like that!
I mean he could if he wanted to obviously but I’d be cringing inside. They are foul 😂

But I keep my feet covered in proper
shoes/trainers all year round except for when on holiday and flipflops on the beach/by the pool are more convenient. I hate feet and don’t like seeing mine let alone other people’s.

Wingingit247 · 11/05/2025 21:40

I’m sorry, but these would give me the ick! I hate being shallow, and I’m not snobby about labels etc, but there are some things that just do not add to a partner’s attractiveness and this would definitely be one of them! 😅

Have you considered a therapy?

Hating your own body part must be quite exhausting...
