To be getting second hand embarrassment because my DH is wearing sandals!

For the first time since I’ve known him, my 43 year old DH has bought himself some sandals. I don’t know why but they make me cringe. I think sandals on men look so naff and ‘old man’.

I’ve put a photo of the pair he has bought on this post.

AIBU or do they look really naff and embarrassing?!

My husband wears socks and sliders I cringe at that but its his choice.

wwyd2021medicine · 11/05/2025 22:08

They are walking sandals. They do the job.
Some outdoorsy men can look attractive even in these shoes - paired with a nice pair of shorts and a shirt for hiking.
Tbh I'd rather have a bloke like that than a vain man.
Or someone who never went for a decent country walk.

Luvtheinlaws · 11/05/2025 22:17

As long as he's not wearing socks with them I think they're OK. It's socks with sandals that does it for me!

ACynicalDad · 11/05/2025 22:21

LTB

LlynTegid · 11/05/2025 22:22

I am OK with them without socks, however I defend the OP is being able to have a different view.

Not even in the Premier League or Championship of bad choices in warmer weather. The sights for sore eyes over this weekend are many.

fiveIsNewOne · 11/05/2025 22:34

This model would be totally fine even with socks. They have closed toe, and they actually show very little feet.

Iceboy80 · 11/05/2025 22:44

Poor man, I wonder honestly how many times you've wore something that he has thought "oh god, what does she look like, that's embarrassing" but he kept his mouth shut.

YABVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVU........

Teasloth · 11/05/2025 23:12

How do you react if he tells you he doesn't like something you wear and makes him feel embarrassed to be seen with you?

That would be my response. If he's allowed to say it then fair enough, but if he's polite and nice then I'd never dream of saying anything

I fully accept it absolutely is unreasonable, but sandals on men give me the heaving ick too.

There’s no rhyme or reason to this at all, but to me they just look really unmanly on all but a vanishingly few men. Barefoot is fine, so it’s not that I’m squeamish about feet, it’s the sandals!

This! 🤷🏼‍♀️

lovegoodlovegood · 12/05/2025 00:49

It’s not so much sandals I mind on men as feet! Sandals look ok but then when they’re got crusty neglected feet, same for women as well
Take care of your feet! I’m perhaps a bit obsessive with my foot care routine but they look ok

HRTQueen · 12/05/2025 01:23

They are awful

if I was meeting someone for the first time on a date and they turned up in those monstrosities it woudl be an instant turn off

but a marriage should have has a deeper level of acceptance 😬

wandawaves · 12/05/2025 02:38

fiveIsNewOne · 11/05/2025 19:36

He is right. You are the only one who cares here.

While others in this thread expressed different opinions about the shoes in general, noone else cares specifically about your husband's footwear.

I would! If I saw him with those things on I would not only cringe at the hideousness, but I would cringe in embarrassment for poor OP having to be seen in public with those things.

He’s bought them 20-30 years too early.

Daisydiary · 12/05/2025 07:39

Agree with you, OP! No rhyme or reason for it but they hardly holler come to bed! They’re def ick-inducing 🤮

Mermaidsarereal · 12/05/2025 07:56

Yeah they're awful my 81 year old grandad wears them 😅 however, it's up to him what he wants to wear so there's nothing you can do... my DH wears god awful chavvy trainers I've just learnt to ignore them!

Sillysoggysheep · 12/05/2025 10:47

My husband wore this type of walking sandal in the summer. I actually got a pair myself for country walks. They're really comfortable and practical and I think they look quite sporty. I don't understand what's wrong with them.

They look perfectly fine.

MumWifeOther · 10/05/2025 21:06

I mean.. bless him, they are awful 😂 my husband is the same age and thankfully not here yet. He wears sliders to the beach, rest of the time trainers!

What a shame for men. I hate winter because of all the putting on socks and lacing shoes faff that has to go on before leaving the house. As soon as I won’t get frostbite I’m in sandals or clogs, no socks. Why shouldn’t men have the same freedom?

cardibach · 12/05/2025 12:16

Tristan5 · 11/05/2025 19:30

Give me his number, I’ll put him right - he’s behaving like a prize tosser, just awful - I don’t know any man who’d even contemplate wearing sandals, WTF is wrong with him??

How odd. Go and have a quick google and you’ll find lots of shops selling men’s sandals and lots of articles about them, so clearly many, many men do wear sandals.
Could you explain why they wouldn’t? Or failing that why the men you know are so restricted in their thoughts about footwear?

SoScarletItWas · 12/05/2025 12:18

Pinkbakewell · 10/05/2025 21:44

He’s been wearing ‘outdoor’ clothing since we first met, and I’ve got used to that over the years.

However, this seems a step too far!

Mr Scarlet is also an outdoorsy type and most of his casual clothes are functional for his climbing and walking. On the other hand, I am never knowingly underdressed and have a ‘too much is never enough’ approach to a frock (think Soft Dramatic on the body/style characteristics scale.)

I will say to you what I said to a very rude man who actually stopped us in the street to tell us we didn’t go together and what was I doing with him (!!!).

He would take the stars out of the sky for me, he scrubs up fine when he needs to, and my life is immeasurably easier and happier for having him in it.

What he wears on his feet is none of my concern, just like he’d never tell me what I should be wearing.

YABU.

Ah, a misogynist as well as unimaginative about shoes

Really? I think the posters on here getting so worked up about this are the ones who are embarrassing themselves.

I really can’t be bothered, but I do agree very much with the OP.

Your use of “odd” is rather odd, it’s hardly the right word to describe someone who has a different opinion (and humour I strongly suspect) to you.
