Do you have 30 fruit & veg in your fridge/ freezer/ cupboard right now?

I read "do you eat 30 different fruit / veg in a week", and I started out curious if we even HAD 30 to pick from. We don't all eat all items, and certainly not all within a week; of the 36+ core items it's unlikely any individual one of us would go over 20 on a given week. How many do you have and actually use?

This is what we have; occasional other bits like figs I don't buy enough to count, I think this is the main set:
13? Fridge: olives, cherry tomatoes, potatoes, iceberg lettuce, artichokes, romaine lettuce, rocket, baby courgette, mixed peppers, fresh chillies, ginger, garlic, baby leek, red onion, spring onion, coleslaw, kimchi, some M&S mixed salad packs (assume we won't count garlic and random pack mixes)
3 Fruit: apples, clementines, raisins
3 Freezer fruit (only for pancakes): blueberries, raspberries, strawberries
3 Freezer veg: cauliflower rice, sprouts, mushrooms garlic, ginger, chillies, mixed greens thing, packs of chopped leek/ courgette / onion / aubergine (from when we were going away)
5 Fruit juices: apple, raspberry, pineapple, rhubarb, grapefruit.
10? Cupboard (used a lot but removing lots of duplicates): peanut butter, almond butter, cashew butter, almonds, cashews, seeds (sunflower, pumpkin, chia, sesame, black sesame, mixed), beans (baked, black, pinto, butter, kidney), water chestnut, bamboo, grated coconut, tinned tomato, tomato paste, mixed grains, artichokes
0 Cupboard (so rarely used): pistachio butter, pearl barley, hearts of palm, poppy seeds, lentils of various types (not counted as not eaten often), walnuts.

I think your list is brilliant. Don't forget that herbs are part of your 30 plants a week too.
I love variety and generally manage 30 plants a week on a regular basis.

Sofasloth · 10/05/2025 19:47

I have a bag of peas in the freezer

Crunchymum · 10/05/2025 19:52

Not even close (although some of the things you have included on your list seems a bit dubious).

Do you have a link to the article you read?

As an aside what is pistachio butter and am I missing out on something delightful?

I want you all to know that I have an abolutely enormous fridge freezer. By knowing this you willl therefore know I have a huge kitchen in a huge house.

I have thirty different leafy green herbs growing on the enormous windowsill of my enormous bedroom. And an orange tree and a chilli plant in the corners.

This is actually true.

ish.

Thanks! I'm not sure my preferred spice fajita counts, it's mostly salt. Then it's just chillies, garlic, pepper, maybe oregano and basil; I don't think the quantities are enough to count apart from DH's chillies.
Any ideas for bits for me to add Into the rotation? We like a lot of stir-fry, so we put a huge range in that. We don't tend to have cucumber, carrot, sweet potato, peas and other bits that others have a lot of; mostly because DH and DS aren't that keen. I might have missed corn off my list though, we do have lots of corn but I think I missed it in both the freezer and cupboard.

At the minute I've got the following fruit and veg in:

Fruit - Bananas, Blueberries, raspberries, apples, pears, oranges, Satsumas, grapes (7)

Salad Veg - Cucumber, tomatoes, spring onions, avocado, peppers, baby potatoes, red onions (7)

Veg - leeks, broccoli, onions, potatoes, carrots, green beans, Parsnips, mushrooms (8)

Tins - tomatoes, sweetcorn, pineapple, apricots, baked beans, kidney beans (6)

28...

We probably average 5 portions each a day.

(there's loads of other fruit and veg we eat, except for sprouts 😊)

I'm going to have to list them:

Salad leaves
Apples
Cucumber
Tomatoes
Leek
Mushrooms
Red pepper
Carrots
Parsnips
Strawberries
Grapes
Potatoes
Peas
Sweetcorn
Onions
Tinned tomatoes
Green beans

Definitely not 30 but quite suprised we have that many to choose from!

Copiousamountsofpulses · 10/05/2025 19:58

Can I count the rhubarb in the garden??

Would it help if I tell you the kitchen has very old 1980s style laminate cupboards and some hinges need help?
The fridge-freezer is newer and a nice size though, also over-full.

DogsOnFilm · 10/05/2025 20:00

I think this is the thing that includes, herbs, spices, nuts, seeds, legumes and grains as well as fruit and veg so I think most people would eat 30 over a week.

Using your list of extras eg peanut butter, raisins etc, I went from 21 to 38. Mix of fresh, frozen, tinned and dried.

Plus herbs so that makes 40 plus however you’re categorising dried mixed herbs - is that one thing? If so, 41.

I reckon we eat an average of 35 of those things on a weekly basis.

Well we know you have potatoes in, in the form of a chip on your shoulder.

Wait till the bastard grows and sheds leaves everywhere!

We have two fig trees and one seems to grow as fast as bamboo overnight. Also in the garden are rhubarb, asparagus, peas, tomatoes , courgettes and more herbs.

Small-medium urban garden, nothing special really. You’ve just got to make the most of it.

WeegieGrannie · 10/05/2025 20:03

My list is more basic. After a delivery I always have

fresh/ fridge fruit and salad - apples, easy peelers, bananas, red grapes, green grapes, tomatoes, rasps, strawbs, blueberries, blackberries, mixed salad leaves, cucumber, mini peppers, carrots, potatoes.

dried fruit - figs, apricots, dates, raisins, sultanas.
nuts- walnuts, cashews, brazilnuts, peanut butter, almond butter.

lentils, pearl barley, chickpeas, quinoa, groats.

freezer - frozen berries, stewed apples, stewed rhubarb, brambles from my garden.

frozen peas, broccoli, peppers, onions, mushrooms, cauliflower, corn

Cans - pineapple chunks, sliced peaches, butter beans, chopped tomatoes.

It's like a peanut butter but more bitty. DH loves it. I find it a bit too sweet. He buys it from Bulk. Their peanut and cashew butter are both fab though.

I didn't read an article, just mumsnet.

Interesting

Fridge 13: carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, peppers, celery, sprouts, bananas, grapes, melon, lettuce, bag of mixed leaves, orange juice

Fruit bowl 1:kiwis

Cupboard 14: tinned tomatoes, baked beans, mixed beans, kidney beans, mushy peas, pesto, onions, potatoes, about 30 jars of herbs and spices I'll count as 1 here, garlic, walnuts, almonds, dried mango, raisins

Freezer 11: blueberries, strawberries, cherries, sweetcorn, peas, ocra, corn on the cob, homemade watercress soup, homemade tomato soup, homemade mushroom soup, base mix (chopped carrot, celery, onion)

I got to 39, but in a week I think I'd eat maybe 23

feelingbleh · 10/05/2025 20:05

As long as you cook and eat it at some point, count away. I seem to remember it took a LOT of sugar when my Nana used to cook it.

Lovelysummerdays · 10/05/2025 20:06

I don’t think I have that many we eat a lot of veg but it’s repetitive. Fruit bananas, oranges, apples and pears. Veg / salad peppers, cucumber, tomatoes, lettuce (several kinds home grown for extra points?) carrots, potatoes (do they count) brocolli, sweetcorn, peas, sugar snaps. Berries and mango in the freezer. Cupboard olives, tomatoes, beans (various) chickpeas, lentils, scotch broth mix (I use this a lot). Herbs that have survived my lack of tlc basil, rosemary, dill, mint and bay leaf tree.

we have had carrots (cooked or in sticks) with pretty much every lunch / dinner for years.

Wont't all that stuff in your fridge go off before you manage to eat it?
