Do you have 30 fruit & veg in your fridge/ freezer/ cupboard right now?

GRex · 10/05/2025 19:44

I read "do you eat 30 different fruit / veg in a week", and I started out curious if we even HAD 30 to pick from. We don't all eat all items, and certainly not all within a week; of the 36+ core items it's unlikely any individual one of us would go over 20 on a given week. How many do you have and actually use?

This is what we have; occasional other bits like figs I don't buy enough to count, I think this is the main set:
13? Fridge: olives, cherry tomatoes, potatoes, iceberg lettuce, artichokes, romaine lettuce, rocket, baby courgette, mixed peppers, fresh chillies, ginger, garlic, baby leek, red onion, spring onion, coleslaw, kimchi, some M&S mixed salad packs (assume we won't count garlic and random pack mixes)
3 Fruit: apples, clementines, raisins
3 Freezer fruit (only for pancakes): blueberries, raspberries, strawberries
3 Freezer veg: cauliflower rice, sprouts, mushrooms garlic, ginger, chillies, mixed greens thing, packs of chopped leek/ courgette / onion / aubergine (from when we were going away)
5 Fruit juices: apple, raspberry, pineapple, rhubarb, grapefruit.
10? Cupboard (used a lot but removing lots of duplicates): peanut butter, almond butter, cashew butter, almonds, cashews, seeds (sunflower, pumpkin, chia, sesame, black sesame, mixed), beans (baked, black, pinto, butter, kidney), water chestnut, bamboo, grated coconut, tinned tomato, tomato paste, mixed grains, artichokes
0 Cupboard (so rarely used): pistachio butter, pearl barley, hearts of palm, poppy seeds, lentils of various types (not counted as not eaten often), walnuts.

Translation:

I want you all to know that I have an abolutely enormous fridge freezer. By knowing this you willl therefore know I have a huge kitchen in a huge house.

So what?

Cherrysoup · 10/05/2025 21:30

Cherrysoup · 10/05/2025 20:48

This is very interesting!

Onions
Sweetcorn
Peas
Peppers
Broccoli
Lettuce
Cherry tomatoes
Cucumber
Celery
Potatoes
Olives
Gherkins
Swede
Grapes
Raspberries
Strawberries
Carrots
Avocado
Chick peas
Kidney beans
Radishes
Brazil nits
22

Growing in the veg patch are cherry tomatoes, green beans, broad beans, carrots, radishes, sweetcorn, potatoes, cress, courgettes, strawberries.

I forgot the satsumas, apples, raisins, pineapple and coleslaw! 27. Not bad!

And coffee, tea and chocolate (haven’t eaten chocolate for 2 years, but my Dh does) count for half, so 28.5!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 10/05/2025 21:30

Easily! Don't forget that coffee and tea count (probably only once), plus herbs and spices.

SpringSunshineanddaffodils · 10/05/2025 21:32

Ooh what an interesting post. OK so this is what I have

Fridge:
Cucumber
Kale
Lettuce
Tomatoes
Radishes
Grapes
Strawberries
Asparagus
Broccoli - we currently have some normal and some tenderstem but I'll count this as one
Carrots
Watermelon
Peppers
Red onion
White onion
Spring onion

In the fruit bowl:
Bananas
Apples
Satsumas

In the freezer:
Cauliflower
Peas

In the cupboard:
Tinned tomatoes but I've already counted tomatoes
Baked beans
Kidney beans
Chickpeas
Sweetcorn
Coconut milk - can I count that?

So I only have 22, because I'm counting the three varieties of onion as one and not counting the coconut milk.

I do have a variety of herbs in the garden

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 10/05/2025 21:34

I have quite a range of wines and understand from, I think, David Bellamy, that they comes from grapes (mine come from Tescos) so whilst I have't got 30 - I think I did have before some friends came round at Easter.

Olive567 · 10/05/2025 21:35

Fresh: apples, bananas, lemon, potatoes, garlic, red onions, white onions, ginger, tomatoes, cucumber, lettuce, green pepper, red pepper, carrots, leek, courgette, broccoli, spring onions.
Frozen: red currants, black currants, black berries, strawberries, blueberries, peas, sweetcorn, green beans.
Canned: lentils, cannelini beans, butter beans, kidney beans, chickpeas.
30 plus if i count the tins.

PurplePenguin28 · 10/05/2025 21:39

Crunchymum · 10/05/2025 19:52

Not even close (although some of the things you have included on your list seems a bit dubious).

Do you have a link to the article you read?

As an aside what is pistachio butter and am I missing out on something delightful?

Edited

I had never tried or heard of pistachio butter either but my DH literally picked it up while shopping yesterday and OMG! YUMMMM! 🤤😋

PointeShoesandTutus · 10/05/2025 21:40

Oh interesting! I found it helped to do this, I realised we actually eat far more veg than I thought, given that we get through most of this in a standard week/fortnight.

Fridge veg - olives, cucumber, lettuce, rocket, tomatoes, French beans, broccoli, cauliflower, runner beans, aubergine, sugar snap peas, carrots. (12)

Fridge fruit - grapes, raspberries, strawberries, blueberries (4)

Cupboard - more olives, baked beans, kidney beans, black beans, chickpeas, sweetcorn (6)

Pantry cupboard - onions, garlic, potatoes, sweet potatoes (4)

Fruit bowl - oranges, bananas, pears, apples, avocado, lemons (6)

Freezer - peas, a random bag of smoothie mix, sliced blood oranges (but they're only as garnish for aperol so probably don't count)

A total of 33! Hooray!

raspberrieswithchocolate · 10/05/2025 21:42

In my kitchen I have:

Potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, garlic, swede, butternut squash, parsnips, carrots, mushrooms
Frozen: broccoli, cauliflower, baby carrots, green beans, kale, spinach

Fruit:
Sultanas, bananas, apples, pears
Frozen: blueberries, strawberries, pineapple, mango

Salad: bag of mixed salad leaves, cherry tomatoes, peppers, cucumber

Ginger

Cupboard:
Cashew and almond butter, tins of tomatoes, coconut, tins/bags of lentils, chickpeas, butter beans and haricot beans. Wholegrain and basmati rice. Jar of black olives. Gherkins

Ground flaxseed and chiaseeds. Pumpkin and sunflower seeds. Walnuts. Jars of various herbs and spices

GRex · 10/05/2025 21:42

I have realised I missed guacamole, lemons and limes in the fridge door. I left the chickpeas because the tin went out of date 5 years ago, but we did have houmous with lunch. There really are a lot more than I thought. I still don't think all 3 of us are getting 30 every single week, but way over 30 types every month...

The Eat the Rainbow Food Journal free app is a fun way to track how many different fruit/veg/spices you have in a week. It made me realise how lacking I was in the orange and purple colour categories.

nannyl · 10/05/2025 21:57

Yes.
I often eat 15 - 20 different plants per day, not 5, and consume 30+ different plants a week.

I have lots of fruit / veg / herbs / salad growing in my garden / greenhouse which i pick as required, and plenty more are in my freezer so I can eat my home grown produce out of season too.

Pickingmyselfup · 10/05/2025 22:00

Very low on food tonight since the food shop is due tomorrow.

Off the top of my head I have...

Frozen butternut squash
Frozen sweet potato
Frozen corriander
Frozen smoothie mix X2
Frozen peas
Garlic lurking somewhere
Roasted red peppers in a jar
Baby spinach
One lonely banana
Courgettes
Carrots
Grapes
A ton of herbs and spices
Passata
Potatoes
Kidney beans
Lentils
Vegetable base mix
Maybe some corn on the cob
Fresh mint in the garden
Dried dates

More than I thought but not 30+. It will go up tomorrow when I'll have apples, bananas, more frozen fruit etc in. I have 2 standard sized freezers in the house, one of which is just mine for all my batch cooking. Have half a drawer just filled with chicken!

Not the point of the thread but where did you get your pistachio butter? I brought some back from holidays but the only place I have seen it here is ocado.
