Do you have 30 fruit & veg in your fridge/ freezer/ cupboard right now?

GRex · 10/05/2025 19:44

I read "do you eat 30 different fruit / veg in a week", and I started out curious if we even HAD 30 to pick from. We don't all eat all items, and certainly not all within a week; of the 36+ core items it's unlikely any individual one of us would go over 20 on a given week. How many do you have and actually use?

This is what we have; occasional other bits like figs I don't buy enough to count, I think this is the main set:
13? Fridge: olives, cherry tomatoes, potatoes, iceberg lettuce, artichokes, romaine lettuce, rocket, baby courgette, mixed peppers, fresh chillies, ginger, garlic, baby leek, red onion, spring onion, coleslaw, kimchi, some M&S mixed salad packs (assume we won't count garlic and random pack mixes)
3 Fruit: apples, clementines, raisins
3 Freezer fruit (only for pancakes): blueberries, raspberries, strawberries
3 Freezer veg: cauliflower rice, sprouts, mushrooms garlic, ginger, chillies, mixed greens thing, packs of chopped leek/ courgette / onion / aubergine (from when we were going away)
5 Fruit juices: apple, raspberry, pineapple, rhubarb, grapefruit.
10? Cupboard (used a lot but removing lots of duplicates): peanut butter, almond butter, cashew butter, almonds, cashews, seeds (sunflower, pumpkin, chia, sesame, black sesame, mixed), beans (baked, black, pinto, butter, kidney), water chestnut, bamboo, grated coconut, tinned tomato, tomato paste, mixed grains, artichokes
0 Cupboard (so rarely used): pistachio butter, pearl barley, hearts of palm, poppy seeds, lentils of various types (not counted as not eaten often), walnuts.

Translation:

I want you all to know that I have an abolutely enormous fridge freezer. By knowing this you willl therefore know I have a huge kitchen in a huge house.

Aww have you got a teeny tiny fridge freezer too? Don’t feel bad, one day we’ll get there.

Jealousy over a fridge is wild though.

GRex · 10/05/2025 20:40

Ladies. In some excellent news, I see from another thread that chocolate, coffee and tea count as half each. I'm pretty sure my coffee portions should be double points, but I'll take the win.

Kreepture · 10/05/2025 20:32

god, nothing like that.. i'm a bit funny about fruit/veg.

Currently we have..
blueberries, strawberries, grapes & apples as fresh fruit.
I have some peach in juice and some mandarin in jelly.
Carrots and Onions are the only veg.. but there are probably frozen peas somewhere in the freezer.
There's some fruit cake and fruited bread in the house.

We have a load of dried mixed herbs/spices

We'll probably buy lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes and some coleslaw for a salad picky tea type thing on monday.
I buy small orange or apple juice bottles occasionally.

How are you with beans, seeds and nuts? They can add nice variety.

I've never bought ponzu, nor even yuzu, I must try it!!
Any proportion guidance?

not really. The cashew butter absorbs an amazing amount of liquid. a rounded dessertspoonful will make sauce with around a snacksized yoghurt pot of water, the kind that comes in 4s and you break the pots apart, but you really need to fiddle around. Ponzu is a yuzu soya sauce mix adds umami and sharpness. its a very easy sauce to fiddle with both to get your choice of thickness and flavour.

Tomatotater · 10/05/2025 20:56

ImFineItsAllFine · 10/05/2025 20:24

Yea I thought it was originally 30 different plants, so things like nuts and rice count. 30 different fruit and veg is more challenging, though I cmso have a lot of random tins of stuff.

Yes its 30 plants. I have Hugh Fearnly Whittingstalls book, which has a ticklist at the front. We hit 30 plants a week fairly easily. Its more about the variety than the amount, so if you eat 1 satsuma, that counts as one, so you cant eat 30 satsumas.

zenai · 10/05/2025 21:01

I live on my own and have to force myself to eat veg. I only like broccoli, cauli and carrots. Have them, raw carrots and frozen br and cauli. I am averse to most fruit also, but like berries, so frozen blueberries, strawberries and raspberries are in the freezer. Spinach for adding to smoothies. I use lazy garlic and frozen onions in recipes. That's more or less it.

I can't believe the amount of f+v some of you have, but I suppose I am the anomaly!

myplace · 10/05/2025 21:01

UndermyShoeJoe · 10/05/2025 20:10

I mean we probably have that growing in the garden.

Two types Grapes, apples, pears, figs, two types cherries, damsons, kiwi, strawberries, blueberries, gooseberries, asparagus, peas, rhubarb cucumbers, black current, red current, runner beans, lettuce, radish, spring onions, red onions, white onions, basil, 6 types of chillies, 2 types of peppers, tomatoes, broccoli normal, purple sprouting broccoli, kale, chard, Brussel sprouts, lemon balm, thyme, rosemary, 5 types of mint. And I’m sure in forgetting some stuff. Oh potatoes, carrots and parsnips. Pumpkin, butter nut squash.

Where do you live that you can grow all that?! I’m envious!

Sparklehead · 10/05/2025 21:02

Fridge: 20. carrots, mushrooms, green beans, lettuce, cucumber, spring onion, cauliflower, cavalo nero, tomatoes, broccoli, radishes, grapes, courgettes, aubergine, peppers, olives, sun-dried tomatoes, parsley, coriander, basil
Fruit bowl: 8. kiwis, oranges, watermelon, avocado, bananas, apples, lemons, limes,
freezer: 8. cherries, blueberries, mango, peas, curry leaves, Broad beans, edamame, spinach
Store cupboard 11. tinned tomatoes, apricots, prunes, raisins, cranberries, banana chips, coconut flakes, potato, sweet potato, onion, garlic
Other: 10. chick peas, black beans, butter beans, haricot beans, red lentils, green lentils, linseed, flax seed, walnuts, almonds

so, 47 fruit and veg in total, 57 including pulses, nuts etc which I’m actually amazed at. In terms of how many we eat on average, 3 of the household are vegetarian and I think would be close to the 30 a week, I’m not veggie, but do eat a lot of veg in particular, so also might hit that number. One DC is very limited in diet so no where near the 30, but she always self-imposes a 5 a day rule, but they are always the same 5!

SaffyWall · 10/05/2025 21:09

Cupboard - red onions, white onions, potatoes, sweet potato

I have an allotment and generally have a decent amount of home grown veg that I blanch or turn into soups. I make my own pasta sauces but we use so many tomatoes that I'm currently waiting for this seasons to start fruiting:)
I'm veggie so we eat a mainly vegetarian diet (if dh wants meat he can cook it)
I don't eat enough fruit as I really only like pineapple melon and mangos and they never last long..I make myself eat an apple a day! The rest is all eaten most weeks and the fridge contents every few days.

Ifeelabitsick · 10/05/2025 21:11

No. It's totally unaffordable.

Just in east anglia. We have greenhouses and poly tunnels.

Thought my sweetcorn is a complete bust this year. Out of 60 seeds sown only 1 has worked 🤬
