Do you have 30 fruit & veg in your fridge/ freezer/ cupboard right now?

I read "do you eat 30 different fruit / veg in a week", and I started out curious if we even HAD 30 to pick from. We don't all eat all items, and certainly not all within a week; of the 36+ core items it's unlikely any individual one of us would go over 20 on a given week. How many do you have and actually use?

This is what we have; occasional other bits like figs I don't buy enough to count, I think this is the main set:
13? Fridge: olives, cherry tomatoes, potatoes, iceberg lettuce, artichokes, romaine lettuce, rocket, baby courgette, mixed peppers, fresh chillies, ginger, garlic, baby leek, red onion, spring onion, coleslaw, kimchi, some M&S mixed salad packs (assume we won't count garlic and random pack mixes)
3 Fruit: apples, clementines, raisins
3 Freezer fruit (only for pancakes): blueberries, raspberries, strawberries
3 Freezer veg: cauliflower rice, sprouts, mushrooms garlic, ginger, chillies, mixed greens thing, packs of chopped leek/ courgette / onion / aubergine (from when we were going away)
5 Fruit juices: apple, raspberry, pineapple, rhubarb, grapefruit.
10? Cupboard (used a lot but removing lots of duplicates): peanut butter, almond butter, cashew butter, almonds, cashews, seeds (sunflower, pumpkin, chia, sesame, black sesame, mixed), beans (baked, black, pinto, butter, kidney), water chestnut, bamboo, grated coconut, tinned tomato, tomato paste, mixed grains, artichokes
0 Cupboard (so rarely used): pistachio butter, pearl barley, hearts of palm, poppy seeds, lentils of various types (not counted as not eaten often), walnuts.

Wasn't until I started counting I realised just how many I had. Quite similar to your list OP

soupyspoon · 10/05/2025 20:09

Yes easily. Some fresh stuff but not a lot as we dont have room, mainly salady bits and herbs. Frozen veg and fruit. Tinned pulses and legumes of a huge variety, packets of grains and lentils, very large number of spices. But thats because I like it all, lots of people wouldnt and thats ok

DogsOnFilm · 10/05/2025 20:00

I think this is the thing that includes, herbs, spices, nuts, seeds, legumes and grains as well as fruit and veg so I think most people would eat 30 over a week.

Yea I thought it was originally 30 different plants, so things like nuts and rice count. 30 different fruit and veg is more challenging, though I cmso have a lot of random tins of stuff.

myplace · 10/05/2025 20:24

Usually every week I’d say several servings of-

Fruit salad with
apples
kiwi
orange
satsuma
mixed frozen berries- strawberries, blackcurrants blackberries redcurrants
Usually grapes as well but not today

Salad of romaine, peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, sweetcorn, celery, carrot

mixed salad leaves
beetroot
tinned tomatoes and tomato purée

chia seeds
flax seeds

chickpeas
garlic
ginger
cumin
pinto beans Or kidney beans
potatoes
onions
chilli
paprika

maybe at least twice a month- aubergine, water chestnuts, baked beans, mushrooms, Cauliflower, broccoli, green beans, lentils, green or red. Nuts. Coconut milk. Parsnips cabbage

I have mint, parsley, chives, bay in the garden but they are only just harvestable.

So I’m probably getting 30 different plants a week without actually making a special effort. Is that the point?

It's like a peanut butter but more bitty. DH loves it. I find it a bit too sweet. He buys it from Bulk. Their peanut and cashew butter are both fab though.

I didn't read an article, just mumsnet.

oooo cashew butter.....makes an amazing sauce for chicken, just add sweet chilli sauce and ponzu to taste and stir in plain water over heat. It will go clumpy and horrible but you just persever and it magically goes to a creamy sauce.

GRex · 10/05/2025 20:27

Anonymouseposter · 10/05/2025 20:08

Wont't all that stuff in your fridge go off before you manage to eat it?

That is why I avoid cucumber, mixed leaf and fresh berries. DH is fierce about using up whatever is near date when he makes meals, so we get through it. Estimated use by:
Mixed salads - 2 days, but just delivered today and will have with lunch tomorrow and Monday.
Coleslaw, iceberg lettuce, rocket, romaine - 3-7 days. Will all be easily used across the week with dinners. We will prioritse rocket tonight and with lunches as it's the weakest one.
Cherry tomatoes, spring onions, mixed peppers, courgettes, leeks - usually expect to last 5--7 days. If we aren't getting through them then I chop and freeze them for stir fries, but they don't last long as they go in most dinners. Baby leeks are most likely to wind up wirh some frozen.
Red onion, potatoes, artichokes - last weeks. An onion went bad once last year, maybe it started out bad.
Olives, kimchi, garlic, ginger - in jars, will last weeks. The fresh olives will be lucky to make it through the weekend.

I've never bought ponzu, nor even yuzu, I must try it!!
Any proportion guidance?

There is a huge Tesco just up the road from my house, I can have my pick of all the fruit and veg from there whenever I want. I can't be bothered counting them but it's definitely more than thirty.
It saves stuff cluttering up my cupboards, freezer and fridge and going off before it gets eaten......

Kreepture · 10/05/2025 20:32

god, nothing like that.. i'm a bit funny about fruit/veg.

Currently we have..
blueberries, strawberries, grapes & apples as fresh fruit.
I have some peach in juice and some mandarin in jelly.
Carrots and Onions are the only veg.. but there are probably frozen peas somewhere in the freezer.
There's some fruit cake and fruited bread in the house.

We have a load of dried mixed herbs/spices

We'll probably buy lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes and some coleslaw for a salad picky tea type thing on monday.
I buy small orange or apple juice bottles occasionally.
