I read "do you eat 30 different fruit / veg in a week", and I started out curious if we even HAD 30 to pick from. We don't all eat all items, and certainly not all within a week; of the 36+ core items it's unlikely any individual one of us would go over 20 on a given week. How many do you have and actually use?

This is what we have; occasional other bits like figs I don't buy enough to count, I think this is the main set:
13? Fridge: olives, cherry tomatoes, potatoes, iceberg lettuce, artichokes, romaine lettuce, rocket, baby courgette, mixed peppers, fresh chillies, ginger, garlic, baby leek, red onion, spring onion, coleslaw, kimchi, some M&S mixed salad packs (assume we won't count garlic and random pack mixes)
3 Fruit: apples, clementines, raisins
3 Freezer fruit (only for pancakes): blueberries, raspberries, strawberries
3 Freezer veg: cauliflower rice, sprouts, mushrooms garlic, ginger, chillies, mixed greens thing, packs of chopped leek/ courgette / onion / aubergine (from when we were going away)
5 Fruit juices: apple, raspberry, pineapple, rhubarb, grapefruit.
10? Cupboard (used a lot but removing lots of duplicates): peanut butter, almond butter, cashew butter, almonds, cashews, seeds (sunflower, pumpkin, chia, sesame, black sesame, mixed), beans (baked, black, pinto, butter, kidney), water chestnut, bamboo, grated coconut, tinned tomato, tomato paste, mixed grains, artichokes
0 Cupboard (so rarely used): pistachio butter, pearl barley, hearts of palm, poppy seeds, lentils of various types (not counted as not eaten often), walnuts.

Nits (no matter what country they are from) are definitely vegetarian. It's only when they hatch they start eating blood...

🤣🤣🤣

Not a chance. DH hates almost all veg and won’t cook it, so unless I’m well enough to cook myself (happens less and less frequently) then it just rots. Sometimes, I’ll get something like Pak Choi, which I love and also get to cook it then he’ll enjoy it but he won’t cook it himself. This evening was an enormous surprise as he actually did broccoli and carrot! It was delightful.

left to ourselves, dad and I would be eating every vegetable under the sun!

Good grief how big is your fridge?! I can see why the tv ads state we "all" throw away too much food, there can be no way you eat all this surely?

Grendel7 · 24/06/2025 17:28

Good grief, how big is your fridge?! I can see why tv ads say we are throwing away too much food in the UK,or are you just listing all fruit and veg you have ever heard of.There is no way you get through that much a week!

Single, live alone, don’t usually manage 5 a day but hit 30 plants a week

fridge - strawberries, raspberries, apples, pickles, pickled red onions, baby leaf salad, beetroot, tomatoes, cucumber, bananas, garlic, ginger, peppers, carrots, spring onions

freezer - butternut squash, smoothie mix, sweetcorn, mixed veg steam bags

cupboard - quinoa, oats, peanut butter, baked beans, black beans, cannellini beans, red lentils, tomato puree, tinned tomatoes, peas, peaches, pears

then herbs and spices, about 40 different ones

You really shouldn't hit plants, they've done nothing to you!

Chungai · 24/06/2025 17:38

Yes we have more than 30 and eat them all every week I would guess. We eat lots of nuts, seeds, pulses, herbs and spices which helps.

Some things we have, like potatoes and olives, don't count as 1 of your 5 a day though.

Butteredtoast55 · 24/06/2025 17:39

Fridge veg: assorted peppers, courgette, potatoes (new and baking), carrots, leeks, tenderstem broccoli, green beans, lettuce, red onions, shallots, mushrooms, tomatoes, cucumber, beetroot, sweetcorn, mange tout, avocado, olives, rocket
Fridge Fruit: raspberries, blueberries, melon, pineapple, grapes, pears
Prepared salads: couscous, orzo, chives, sultanas, apricots, parsley, mint, pomegranate
Freezer: blackberries, cherries, peas, soffritto mix
Fruit bowl: bananas, lemons, apples, limes
Cupboard: sweetcorn, chickpeas, butter beans, rice, various herbs, pepper, tinned plums and peaches, cashews, sesame seeds, almonds, macadamias, pistachios and hazelnuts
Can I count pickled gherkins? And red cabbage? Technically also tea and coffee (we use coffee beans and DH likes weirdly fussy tea). Also mandarin oranges but they're in a jelly as Mr Toast isn't well and it's his soothing treat 😁

There's more out of the fridge than in it. We don't put much veg in the food waste usually; just tops, tails etc. If you have a look in the thread, you'll find lots of people are similar.

Fridge is 342 litres, or thereabouts. There is some fridge veg and fruit that's eaten almost daily like lettuce, cherry toms, peppers, onion, spring onion, olives, garlic etc. Other bits come and go; with lunch and dinner for 2/3 of us there's 30-37 meals every week plus occasional bits with breakfast (e.g. mushroom, tomato and spinach on cheesy toast).

Wow, that sounds like a lot! We have very little cupboard space and a small fridge freezer so minimal stock.

fresh fruit: apples, pears, satsumas, bananas, blueberries and grapes.
salad: lettuce, mixed leaves, cucumber, tomatoes, celery and pickled onions.
veg: courgettes, peppers,
frozen: Peas, sweetcorn, peppers, onion. Various potato items.
tinned: tomatoes and sweetcorn.

various dried fruit snacks.

Fridge: Peanut butter, tomatoes, Cucumber, lettuce, broccoli, orange juice, grape juice
Cupboards: Raisins, tinned tomatoes, sweetcorn, tinned pineapple, tinned prunes, various herbs
Fruit bowl: Bananas, pears
