Do you have 30 fruit & veg in your fridge/ freezer/ cupboard right now?

I read "do you eat 30 different fruit / veg in a week", and I started out curious if we even HAD 30 to pick from. We don't all eat all items, and certainly not all within a week; of the 36+ core items it's unlikely any individual one of us would go over 20 on a given week. How many do you have and actually use?

This is what we have; occasional other bits like figs I don't buy enough to count, I think this is the main set:
13? Fridge: olives, cherry tomatoes, potatoes, iceberg lettuce, artichokes, romaine lettuce, rocket, baby courgette, mixed peppers, fresh chillies, ginger, garlic, baby leek, red onion, spring onion, coleslaw, kimchi, some M&S mixed salad packs (assume we won't count garlic and random pack mixes)
3 Fruit: apples, clementines, raisins
3 Freezer fruit (only for pancakes): blueberries, raspberries, strawberries
3 Freezer veg: cauliflower rice, sprouts, mushrooms garlic, ginger, chillies, mixed greens thing, packs of chopped leek/ courgette / onion / aubergine (from when we were going away)
5 Fruit juices: apple, raspberry, pineapple, rhubarb, grapefruit.
10? Cupboard (used a lot but removing lots of duplicates): peanut butter, almond butter, cashew butter, almonds, cashews, seeds (sunflower, pumpkin, chia, sesame, black sesame, mixed), beans (baked, black, pinto, butter, kidney), water chestnut, bamboo, grated coconut, tinned tomato, tomato paste, mixed grains, artichokes
0 Cupboard (so rarely used): pistachio butter, pearl barley, hearts of palm, poppy seeds, lentils of various types (not counted as not eaten often), walnuts.

A wide range of plants is supposed to help your gut microbiome. I've never counted up, but I'm a fan of Zoe Healthcare podcasts and they sell 'Daily 30' which is a scoop (small handful) a day of 30 plant-based foods to boost your veg intake. I looked at the Daily 30 ingredients and I have most of them in the kitchen, and mine cost a lot less than the Zoe mix. I only buy about 7-8 types of veg and fruit a week, but I have frozen, plus lots of nuts, seeds, tinned tomatoes and beans, lentils, dried herbs and spices, etc.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 11/05/2025 21:08

Right now, not loads because I need to do a big shop.

In regular rotation/consumption:
Cucumber
Tomatoes (fresh and tinned)
Spring onions
Onions
Potatoes
Salad bags/romaine lettuce
Mushrooms
Peppers
Carrots
Broccoli
Peas
Garlic
Apples
Bananas
Baked beans
Hummus
Oregano
Tea
Coffee
Rosemary
Coriander
Chilli
Limes
Sweet potatoes
Olives
25

In less regular rotation:
Cauliflower
Leeks
Mange tout
Edamame beans
Corn on the cob
Satsumas
Tinned peaches
Cabbage (either buttered or in slaw)
Coconut milk
Peanut butter
Lentils
Avocado
Strawberries (in season only)
Blueberries
Raspberries
Lemons
Kale
Swede
Capers
Gerkhins
Courgette
Aubergine
Melon
Butternut squash
Radishes

Things I buy that go off before anyone eats them:
Kiwi fruit
Pears
Quite a lot of the berries/bananas/salad bags

Growing:
Shedloads of mint
Chives
Rosemary
Sage
Basil
(just planted: fennel and strawberries, so hope they survive)
I did have thyme and oregano but the mint has taken over and drowned them out.

This is a helpful exercise because it’s showing me that I almost always have 30 fruit and veg in, even when it seems like we eat the same few things over and over again, there actually are a lot when you look at them all together.

StupidBoy · 11/05/2025 21:09

Been shopping today. Right now I have:

Maris Piper potatoes
Jersey Royal potatoes
Red, brown and spring onions
Swiss chard
Runner beans
Cauliflower
Red cabbage
Carrots
Cucumber
Baby plum tomatoes
Courgettes
Lemons and limes
Oranges
1 sweet potato
1 plantain
garlic
Brussels sprouts

That's 20. I find if I buy too much if goes wilted or shrivelled before I can use it all. I probably won't manage to use all of that before some of it goes on the turn. There are only two of us at home now.

StupidBoy · 11/05/2025 21:10

Oh and chestnut mushrooms, plus I have peas and sweetcorn and chopped leeks and chopped celery in the freezer. So that's 25.

StupidBoy · 11/05/2025 21:18

If we are counting things in jars and tins as well as dry in packets and not just fruit and vegetables but all things of plant origin, then I go way over 30. Lentils, chickpeas, tomatoes, various dried beans, pulses and various grains, jarred roast peppers, tinned baked beans, butter beans, tinned prunes, pineapple, pickled beetroot, saurkraut, tons of nuts. I've also got fresh root ginger. I usually have big bunches of coriander, mint and parsley in the fridge because I am obsessed with them, as well as smaller quantities of basil, chives and dill on the go as well, but I don't have any of those this week.

Yourcatisnotsorry · 11/05/2025 21:21

Fruit - 11
bananas, apples, melon, pineapple, clems, strawbs, figs, grapes (3 colours do they all count?), rasps, pomegranate, blueberries. Kids eat them all I don’t like apples but have the rest.

Veg - 21
potatoes, onions, leeks, mushrooms, spinach, Cavelo Nero, broccoli, carrots, sweet potatoes, sugar snaps, cucumber, tomatoes, radishes, peppers, salad bags (inc baby leaves and beetroot), celery, white cabbage, garlic, coriander, basil. There might be a courgette lurking but I’m not 100%. I eat it all the kids won’t eat the salad leaves or radishes and not keen on cabbage.

cupboard - 15
lentils (green and red), chick peas, kidney beans, cannelini beans, butter beans, sweetcorn, tinned mango, Greek aubergines (heavenly), peanut butter, cashews, walnuts, chia seeds, mixed seeds, pinenuts.

freezer - 2
Peas, okra, possibly other stuff but doubled up fresh.

kids have innocent smoothies in the fridge and will get fruit juices but I don’t really drink them.

We eat seeded bread and probably half our food by volume is fruit, veg and pulses. We have a lot of carbs and the kids love crisps and sweets though so I do worry about our diets.

AdoraBell · 11/05/2025 21:22

Probably not.

Carrots
Leeks
Cauliflower
Peas
Raspberries
Blueberris
Mango

Copiousamountsofpulses · 10/05/2025 19:58

Can I count the rhubarb in the garden??

Only if you plan to eat it🤔

GRex · 11/05/2025 22:25

@Yourcatisnotsorry - what is greek aubergine please, is that a particular recipe?

Anonymouseposter · 10/05/2025 20:08

Wont't all that stuff in your fridge go off before you manage to eat it?

Yeah, this. I have a tiny fridge, no supermarket in walking distance, and no car. I can only afford one delivery a week. I eat a lot of tinned and frozen food. This is a very very privileged thread.

GingerLiberalFeminist · 11/05/2025 22:38

In fridge we have: blueberries, strawberries, grapes, mange tout, cucumber, courgettes(6).
In veg drawer we have onions, shallots, garlic, carrots, sweet potatoes, mushrooms (6)
In freezer we have green beans, spinach, brocolli, parsnips, peas, carrots, edame, stir fry veg mix, cauliflower (9).
Then I have a jar of nuts, seeds and raisins I make up from H&B packs - 5 nuts, 10 seeds, 5 raisins.

Altogether 41. But 21 without the nuts n seeds. Actually not as bad as I thought I'd be given I can't eat nightshades (potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, aubergine).

TeeBee · 11/05/2025 22:49

In my tiny, tiny backyard:
strawberries
tomatoes
potatoes
leeks
chard
kale
welsh onion
red onion
pak choi
parsnips
carrots
dwarf peas
French beans
field beans
purple peas
cucamelon
courgette
sorrel
russian kale
globe artichokes
orach
tree spinach
fennel
nasturtium
basil
parsley
corriander
thyme
rosemary
blueberries
honeyberries
Sunflower (seeds)
3 types of edible flowers
10 medicinal herbs
spring onion
lettuce
Celery
Thats before I even go in the kitchen…so not too difficult.

EggnogNoggin · 11/05/2025 22:52

Almost certainly.

Between us today we had:

Breakfast - Orange juice (1)
Crumpets with peanut butter (1)

Lunch/afternoon - homemade hummus (1) chickpeas, garlic, smoked paprika, tahini (I'll only count the chickpeas here as others were tiny amounts), red pepper, cucumber, carrot sticks (3).

Yoghurt and blueberries (1)
Grapes (1)
Homemade banana bread (1)
Contained 3x bananas and walnuts but small portion
Raisin, cranberry and cashew bread (not counting as small amounts)

Dinner
Chilli (5) courgette, sweetcorn, sweet potato, kidney and white beans woth guacamole (1)
Won't count the duplicated carrots and red pepper or meagre onion, tomato, garlic, chilli and herbs) or the jacket potato.

So today was 15 without counting the very small bits.

We have homemade veggie burgers and soup in the freezer and half the stir fry bits we've bought in reduced section over the weeks. We will have roasted veg and cous cous and salad later in the week to use up the leftover veg.

So yes, i expect we have and will eat 30+ in a week.

kathmacc · 11/05/2025 22:52

I assumed 30 meant portions not individual veg/fruit and obviously the items would vary weekly!

Firethehorse · 12/05/2025 03:13

Oh thanks OP this is actually making me peruse what I have in!

Fresh : strawberry, blueberry, raspberry, apple, pear, tangerine, grapes, dates, olives, carrots, sweet pots/white pots, kale, rocket, onion, celery, cabbage, choy sum, cauliflower, broccoli, turmeric, cucumber, ginger
Frozen : spinach, green beans, butternut squash, peas, sweetcorn, pepper/aubergine/courgette mix, garlic, coriander, basil, blackberry/strawberry/black/red currant/raspberry mix, lime & lemon slices & wedges
Tins/Jars : cherry, pineapple, tomatoes
Dried : Apricots, raisins, figs, goji, peach resin and a load of herbs & spices
I have a load of nuts, seeds & grains too but not so much on the pulses side.
I think the point about just buying it super fresh as you need it is really relevant though. It’s not having it, it’s using it and it’s hard to finish everything especially when people frequently dip out of meals at the last minute.

GarlicPile · 12/05/2025 03:23

I've got so many herbs & spices, I'd have 30 if there were no other plants in the house! As it happens, my freezer's currently full from a shop last week. I've also got tinned fruit, jam, marmalade, some nuts, cereals and some gently wilting fresh stuff.

I know the '30 different plants' thing was arbitrary anyway, but I did count up for a couple of weeks. I usually hit 30 by the middle of the week. Am not worried if some weeks are repetitive.

GarlicPile · 12/05/2025 03:26

cocoloco23 · 11/05/2025 22:33

Tinned and frozen are good! Actually better in most cases.

sashh · 12/05/2025 03:32

I live alone so having 30 fresh fruit and veg some would go off before I got round to eating it.

In the fridge I currently have olives, peanut butter, carrots and some of those long life fruit in juice and a carton of OJ. But the local community shop gets new stock on a Monday so I

In the freezer, a couple of bags of berries, chopped onions, chilis, ginger, garlic and probably cauliflower, maybe some sweetcorn.

In the garden I have a pear tree that is full of mini pears, but as a squirrel is enjoying them I don't know how many I will get this year, I have an olive tree and a lemon tree too.

WomenInSTEM · 12/05/2025 06:23

GRex · 11/05/2025 20:43

I think most herbs can't count because we don't eat enough of them. DH might count chillies, maybe we can count garlic some weeks and maybe ginger. But a whole handful of freshvherbs or teaspoon of dried seems a LOT for one person.

When my herbs are ready to pick I eat almost lot of them, some with every meal.
Yesterday I ate flat-leaved parsley with breakfast, lunch and dinner. 😆

Allthings · 12/05/2025 07:46

Sparrow7 · 11/05/2025 10:22

I double checked the 30 when I listened to a podcast about it a while ago. As a family we easily eat 30 different plants over 2-3 days and I don't even like fruit.

Edited

Same here. In a bad week we average around 35 a week but more likely around 41–45. Fruit is only a small proportion.

Fruit bowl: bananas, apples, Satsumas, peaches, persimmon, lemon, a rather elderly pear that probably won't get eaten, cantaloupe, tomatoes.
Fridge: cucumber, lettuce, spinach, peppers, spring onions, radishes, celery, aubergine, courgettes, carrots, white Cabbage, red Cabbage, cavalo nero, cauliflower, green beans, fennel, broad beans, leeks, mushrooms, grapes, blueberries, pomegranate, olives, beetroot, artichokes, sundried tomatoes, capers, cornichons.
Freezer: peas, edamame, blackberries, raspberries.
Tins: sweetcorn, lentils, tomatoes, Coconut milk, kidney beans, cannellini beans, black beans, butter beans.
Cupboard: green lentils, brown lentils, red lentils, Buckwheat, split peas, quinoa, various types of rice (does rice count?), pickled onions, Raisins, dried apples, dried cranberries, Brazil nuts, cashews, Peanuts, Walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds, Pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pine nuts.
Windowsill: mint (the basil sadly died)
Other cupboard: potatoes, sweet potatoes, red onions, brown onions, garlic, butternut squash.
That's over 60 when you take out duplicates (e.g. Tinned and dried green lentils). I do mostly eat vegetarian food though, I don't think it used to be as high.
