DH embarrassing himself on local Facebook page

GiraffePoster · 08/05/2025 16:16

I’ve been alerted by several people who know me about posts my DH has made on our town’s local community page and underneath articles posted on the newspapers Facebook page.

These are varying level of inappropriate/offensive depending on your views on certain topics. Some are outright rude. Immigration, migrant hotels etc

He appears to have only just started doing this in the past couple of weeks. I’ve confronted him and he has admitted it and basically said he’s just having a laugh and winding people up who take things too seriously.

I have asked him to stop this as it is embarrassing for me and we also have young DC who people will know.

He has said it’s his social media and I can’t control this, and that Facebook will delete his account if they feel what he’s posting is wrong, and they haven’t taken anything down.

Am I being controlling to suggest he should delete his account? The damage is done to an extent, but I want to save further embarrassment.

OP posts:

My friend suggested that, but from what I can see one of the admins is just as childish with their comments.

You could try reporting his posts to face continually? Seeing if Facebook will ban him?

grumblebutt · 08/05/2025 16:33

Ugh this would give me the instant ick. The calibre of people you see posting on these things is always bottom of the barrel. Im all for freedom of speech but social media really does bring out the twat in some people, your dh seems to be one of them.

WhassatNow · 08/05/2025 16:33

Is there anything that might have prompted his change of behaviour if this is a recent change and otherwise out of character?

GreenPinkYellowOrange · 08/05/2025 16:34

It doesn’t matter if he’s not using his surname, he could be using Mickey Mouse, it only takes one person report it to his employer and he’d be out for bringing disrepute to the company. My sister is a nurse, she worked with someone who was doing exactly the same as your husband, someone reported her and she lost her job as was deemed gross misconduct. No employer wants to have their company tarred with hiring people with racist attitudes.

There was another article uploaded and obviously you could only see the headline and photo. It was basically a middle aged woman who was unhappy with roadworks or something.

DH commented ‘I bet she’s single’ not realising the article said she’s recently widowed…

So, to recap: sexist, racist, cowardly in trying to disguise his identity, but inept in that he's doing it really badly. Form an orderly queue, ladies!
Actually, maybe that's the thing you could post underneath, after saying it's your husband.
Seriously, maybe taking the piss with comments underneath will stop him. Maybe not but you could try. Has he not got enough to do? Post 'I've told him to get a job but he keeps spending his time on this instead' underneath..

I don’t believe him to be racist. But any time something is posted on the paper about new houses, developments etc he will reply ‘that’ll be for the new arrivals’ or something similar to that

I can't see how that isn't racist. He's also unashamedly spouting it very publicly.

Hephebe · 08/05/2025 16:36

This must be a wind-up.

MrsKeats · 08/05/2025 16:36

Freedom of speech aside he sounds about 14 and not very intelligent.

YesHonestly · 08/05/2025 16:36

Just tell him that most of the village have contacted you to tell him that he looks like an uneducated, ignorant twat and laugh at him behind his back 🤷‍♀️.

KnittyNell · 08/05/2025 16:36

I don’t know what he actually posted obviously but is it not possible to make comments about not wanting anymore people adding to our island’s overcrowding problem without being labelled as racist or xenophobic?

Shitmonger · 08/05/2025 16:36

That’s obnoxious. I’d come up with something to copy/paste under his idiotic comments like:

“This is my husband. Unfortunately he realized that the position of village idiot was open and has decided to enthusiastically take up the role. Please ignore him, I had nothing to do with the decision.”

But more seriously I’d probably issue an ultimatum that he stops or I leave him. Even if he doesn’t actually believe what he says, trolling on the internet for fun is pathetic. The comment about the recent widow was unforgivable and that’s without touching the fact that he’s probably racist.

No because it simply isn’t true 🤷‍♀️

Butchyrestingface · 08/05/2025 16:38

On the bright side, if he keeps this up, he might find his collar getting felt by the long arm of the law for incitement, like others before him.

OP could go to court and plead for an extended, custodial sentence.

Perhaps I should consult the Guardian instead, isn’t that where ostriches usually bury their heads?

menopausalfart · 08/05/2025 16:42

He sounds gross.
