It’s a LOTR one. I feel so upset over my DHs comment about elves.

Name change for this one as it’s slightly outing.

My DH is a huge lord of the rings fan. When my DH and I first got together, he used to “lovingly” joke that I was his hobbit. I’m only 5’3” and I do dress quite quirky so I took it as a compliment. It soon became a bit of a pet name for me and as he’s short too, I likened him to a dwarf.

Over the weekend, We were at one of his friend’s house and he has a relatively new girlfriend. Their kitchen /lounge is slightly open plan so I could hear slightly the conversation my DH was having with his friends. All of his friends are lotr fans and this new gf in the group is very tall. DHs friend was bragging that he had finally managed to pull an elf. My DH exclaimed that it was every man’s dream to pull an elf… One of DHs friends said I thought it was your dream to pull a hobbit, my pet name is known to his friends. DH said he wouldn’t touch a hobbit with those big and hairy feet.

I felt so defeated over this. He has called me a hobbit for years, affectionately so I thought.

I approached him about this after the party and he said that the whole hobbit thing was him teasing me because I’m short. He didn’t want to bring this up as, in his words “I made hobbit my whole personality”. We argued and I said, why is he with me if his dream is someone very tall and well the opposite to me.!? We haven’t spoken since and I’m wondering if I’m over reacting.

Aibu for being devastated and embarrassed by this?

Wow, people seriously live their lives by a film?! Insane

If it's not Natalie it's Scarlet...

Yeah that one is pretty straightforward.

Well actually it's a book...

I'm fascinated by men lusting after her, which a lot of them seem to. She's beautiful, obviously, but she always plays such buttoned-up characters. Maybe that's what men like.

If I were offered the chance to magically look like anyone else, I'd want to be mega-tall and gorgeous—Sigourney Weaver in the 80s, or She-Hulk.

Natalie and Scarlett both played against type in The Boleyn Girl.

Na.

He's definitely flawed.

Well I just asked ChatGPT (sorry, planet): "Which contemporary real person is the closest match to the tolkien character of frodo?"

After a little prompting it suggested Keanu Reeves. (Amongst others.)

Ooo Keanu Reeves. Good call chatgpt.

Now is he going to save us all in real life?

OP, kindly, I can kind of see why you’re upset.. kind of.

Because I really love my DH. He’s a great man, husband, father, lover whatever.

He’s also well aware that if Chris Hemsworth and his thighs of Thor rock up at our house and offer me some login’, I’m kicking him out sooner than one can say ‘hakuna matata’. In reverse, I’m getting booted for Natalie Portman.

All joking aside, surely, we all harmlessly find other people/celebrities attractive, without a hidden agenda or actual plan of adultery? Just some people are attractive and easy to look at?

I wouldn’t overthink it. Explain you were hurt, but that maybe you’ll chill it with the hobbit things.

Oh come on. Real people, and you go up to them at parties and tell them how attractive they are, while your wife can hear? And then you add that the phrase you’ve used to describe your wife your whole relationship represents disgusting?

this has nothing to do with some people being attractive or Chris Hemsworth rocking up. This is a huge display of public disrespect. If Chris Hemsworth turned up at a party and you shouted out everything you’d ever disliked about your husband is a better comparison.

Not Xena, Warrior Princess?

I'm guessing a lot of women would if it got them laid by Chris Hemsworth (he doesn't do it for me mind).

Hell no. I'd get cold.

Agreed. Op’s husband gave her the impression he loved short and cute, then congratulated someone for scoring someone tall. I totally get how anyone would be gutted.

If he doesn’t himself look like Legolas then LTE (leave the Elf)

Never watched it. I'm more about 80s cheek bones and power dressing.

Imisscoffee2021 · 06/05/2025 22:26

I was 16 when ROTK came out and believe me I was and still am a huge LOTR nerd, even swung by hobbiton when I was in NZ, but this is too much! It's kind of like when guys say something tactless and borderline offensive in front of their gf, usually like pining for big boobs or saying they love blondes when gf is a brunette, but don't let the peoples of middle earth and their attributes become a thing, plus everyone knows you're a mix of at least two anyway, like Hogwarts houses :)

Just have a word with DH that it's rude to talk about women in those terms anyway, fetishises them and especially rude to talk about in front of you.

How long have you been married for?

It is computed by the lore-masters that the Valar came to the realm of Arda, which is the Earth, five thousand Valian years ere the first rising of the Moon, which is as much as to say forty-seven thousands and nine hundred and one of our years.
That divides into 3500 Valian years (or 33,530 of our years) before the creation of the Two Trees, the 'Days without days'. Then 1495 years of the Trees (14,322 of our years), 'the Days of Bliss'. Then five years (48 of our years) of Darkness.
Total 5000 Valian years or 47,901 solar years from the Creation to the rising of the Sun and Moon.
The rest of the First Age was 590 solar years, the Second Age was 3441 years and the Third Age was 3021 years.
Grand total, up to the end of Lord of the Rings, 54,953 solar years.

CrystalSingerFan · 06/05/2025 22:29

Well he did good with Sandra Bullock. And the busload of randoms.

For the record, ChatGPT says: "Why he’s like Frodo:

  • Known for humility, kindness, and generosity despite fame — almost Shire-like qualities.
  • Keanu has experienced deep personal loss yet carries himself with quiet dignity and resilience.
  • Avoids the spotlight when he can, much like Frodo retreats after his journey, wounded but wiser."

I knew none of this. Any fans care to comment?

What really interested me was ChatGPT's inclusive and hopefully feminist suggestions of Greta Thunberg and Malala Yousafzai in its six suggestions.

MemorableTrenchcoat · 06/05/2025 20:25

You must realise how childish this all sounds?

It's not "childish" FFS she's overheard her husband basically say "oh mate you lucky sod, you've pulled a super model and I'm with that" AND instead of apologising for embarrassing her, he doubled down and declared he's spent (I assume) years, not affectionately calling her a pet name based on a shared love of a particular book (that is a well regarded classic, for all the people making shitty "childish" comments, btw) but actually just... Insulting her for being short. Even though he is also short.

I'd be really hurt and angry at this @UnhappyHobbit .

HumanRightsAreHumanRights · 06/05/2025 22:31

He incorporated you into the thing he loves and the only group you really fit in are Hobbits if you are short but don't have a beard.

Calling you an elf would be silly if you are obviously not tall and slim.

It doesn't mean he doesn't love you.
It just means that while you fit in the smaller group that are best described as Hobbits, you are the exceptionalyl attractive Hobbit, while most of them are not attractive due to features you don't have (aka large hairy feet).

The fact he found a place for you in his fantasy world is a compliment.
He's hasn't said you are Uruk-hai or Gollum (both also short).
Those would be insulting.

It's not a better comparison, because they weren't actually talking about OP, or even the friend's girlfriend (and no-one went up to this woman and told her how attractive she was). They were talking about which fantasy characters they'd prefer to fuck.

SelinaPlace · 06/05/2025 22:32

This is like me getting cross because DH married a Ferenghi and then congratulated someone else on bagging a Klingon.

BrianaBlessed · 06/05/2025 22:33

You’ve made hobbit your whole personality is perhaps the best insult I’ve ever heard

He's got a long-term partner who has grey hair (similar age to him) rather than half his age and multiple divorces. He doesn't seem to have 'stories' follow him around about his behaviour either.

Greta being compared to Frodo perhaps isn't a flattering comparison tbh.

Jesus, neither is remotely appealing!

Echobelly · 06/05/2025 22:35

I'm 5ft 1 with dark blonde hair and a round face, and my DH fancies Sigourney Weaver. But it doesn't mean he doesn't want me.
