evening wise mumsnetters

ive been thinking tonight about loo roll useage (happy bank holiday i hope yours is as thrilling as mine) and i was wondering how long it takes for one person to use up one toilet roll

i will be the first to admit im heavy handed with a loo roll i do use too much BUT I am currently house/pet sitting for a family friend for two weeks and they have left me three loo rolls... 3 loo rolls for 2 weeks, they have vastly underestimated me haven't they

so say you were living alone, how long would one loo roll last you id like to know how off piste i am

I have an actual subscription for loo roll as my family go through so much. But even I have to say that as a single person, you must have some issues to go through more than 3 rolls in 2 weeks on you’re own

Solmum1964 · 03/05/2025 00:24

Are they standard size rolls?
Tesco do longer rolls, equivalent to one and a half rolls as well as double rolls.

XenoBitch · 03/05/2025 00:34

When I was growing up, I was not allowed any more than 3 squares of loo roll... for anything.
So as an adult, I probably get through 2 to 3 rolls a week on my own. Life is too short for limiting loo roll use.

happytobee · 03/05/2025 00:39

I live alone but only at home half the week, I probably run out once every 2-3 weeks so maybe one a week or just over for someone at home all the time? The one downstairs is hardly used and I go through 1 every month or so

BobbyBiscuits · 03/05/2025 00:39

There must be more in a cupboard? I'd say if there isn't then you'll need to bring your own. Or just shovel loads of bog roll from the big dispenser in the pub toilets into your handbag. I won't tell on you I promise!
In my student days I had a mate who once literally took the whole giant roll off the dispenser in McDonald's and brought it triumphantly back to the flat in a huge rucksack!
Maybe you shouldn't go that far 😂

Edited

My mum has a cleaning company, and during Covid, people were stealing loo roll from offices all the time.

Anamechangeisnotjustforchristmas · 03/05/2025 01:21

It’s probably just an oversight. There is a lot to remember if you are going away and also organising house sitting!

HerNextDoorAgain · 03/05/2025 01:56

Meanwhile, in an alternative place: AIBU to be offended that the person I’m house sitting for left me 24 loo rolls for three weeks. Do they think I’m a dirty arsed shitting machine?

MidnightMeltdown · 03/05/2025 02:04

3 should be plenty. I was pondering this recently as we only had 4 loo rolls left, and I was wondering when to order more. In my house, 3 adults ended up getting through just under 3 loo rolls in a week. So I think approximately 1 loo roll per person needed, per week.

In sum, you only need two loo rolls OP!

Velmy · 03/05/2025 02:12

I work away and stay in hotels a lot. There's usually two rolls in your room when you check in, and it always baffles me when the room service people offer extra rolls every day.

What do they think is wrong with me? 😅

AmusedGoose · 03/05/2025 04:45

I think it's the fear of running out for some people. Dh is like it. Takes a spare roll in his suitcase, one in the boot of his car. He buys several packs of 32 in the wardrobe. We had a loo roll mountain well before covid! I hope you aren't remote and can get to a shop!

whitewineandsun · 03/05/2025 05:43

That should be enough, surely?

GRex · 03/05/2025 05:48

If you are house sitting for 2 weeks, would you not expect to buy anything? Fresh milk, bread, veg etc? I don't know what your arrangement is with the owner, but either they should pay you for the pet sitting (in which case buy your own loo roll), or it's mutually beneficial due to the location (in which case buy your own loo roll).

Either way, just under 1 per persom week is usually about right. Which makes me wonder if they were deliberately sized that way.

susiedaisy1912 · 03/05/2025 05:49

I use one loo roll every 24 hours on my own.

How? What do you do with it?

Ariela · 03/05/2025 06:10

Are they Sainsburys 200 sheet rolls? I'd manage fine with one of those for 3 weeks on my own. But I'm out at work by day.

WWomble · 03/05/2025 06:10

Very much depends on the brand and the person!!

loo roll is like fuel tanks - people either like to have half the whole supply or leave it to the last minute to buy a small pack. My cousin, different generation, and I are both inclined to stock pile, so I think there’s a genetic element too!

Chickenwing2 · 03/05/2025 06:11

I did once use up a toilet roll in 1 day, and I wasn’t even unwell or anything, I just noticed that day I’d used a whole roll myself. I think typically 1 roll lasts me about 3-4 days.

Seawolves · 03/05/2025 06:12

I am the only person who uses loo roll in our house and get through one roll every 10 - 14 days or so.

LillyPJ · 03/05/2025 06:17

3 loo rolls for 2 weeks for 1 person is plenty, I think. I get through one roll every 2 or 3 weeks. (Although I probably got through at least 1 roll a day when I got food poisoning in Spain!)

olympicsrock · 03/05/2025 06:21

I would say a new roll every 10 -14 days . I’m not in the house all day though.

And here we have it ladies & gents! The loo roll equivalent to the Mumsnet chicken! 🍗

Toootss · 03/05/2025 06:26

I think loo roll is narrower than it was and I think people, youngsters mainly, are using much more. Unfortunately I didn't measure the height of a loo roll in the past to be able to prove this.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 03/05/2025 06:46

This is what you should consider... an xylospongium.

'The xylospongium, also known as a tersorium or "sponge on a stick," was an interesting hygienic tool used in ancient Rome. This particular utensil providing a means to clean themselves after defecating. Constructed by attaching a sea sponge to a wooden stick, the xylospongium served as a precursor to modern toilet paper in Roman society.'

They last for ages, I think Robert Dyas may sell them - it's worth asking.
