evening wise mumsnetters

ive been thinking tonight about loo roll useage (happy bank holiday i hope yours is as thrilling as mine) and i was wondering how long it takes for one person to use up one toilet roll

i will be the first to admit im heavy handed with a loo roll i do use too much BUT I am currently house/pet sitting for a family friend for two weeks and they have left me three loo rolls... 3 loo rolls for 2 weeks, they have vastly underestimated me haven't they

so say you were living alone, how long would one loo roll last you id like to know how off piste i am

@Christ0nABike I saw the other thread too. I actually use less loo roll now even though I go more often. One wipe is often enough now but never used to be!

Maggiethecat · 05/05/2025 06:45

I’m currently away on my own for 4 nights and have the chance to consider my sole usage. One roll was left in the rented apartment I’m in and I bought a pack of four Andrex rolls of which I have two full rolls left.
therefore, I’ve gone through three rolls in 2 1/2 days, so more than 1 per day!
I’m not ill or going to the loo excessively so I can only presume that this is my normal usage.
i never wipe just once though and I like to have a comfortable ball of tissue when I wipe.

IwasDueANameChange · 05/05/2025 06:48

How the fuck are people peeing every 15 mins? Surely that doesn't even count as continent??

LillyPJ · 05/05/2025 06:53

@Maggiethecat I use a 'comfotable ball' of tissue if I'm in a hotel or public loo. At home, it's two sheets of good quality 3ply folded into three layers.

Maggiethecat · 05/05/2025 06:54

My sister is looking after an elderly lady whom she was dismayed to learn had filth under her fingernails.
She realised that the lady only uses 2 squares of loo roll after a poo 😳

cross posted with you @LillyPJ so my post about the elderly lady wasn’t a response to yours.
I doubt that this lady has a technique in folding/wiping her 2 squares or she’s getting it very wrong bless her.

LillyPJ · 05/05/2025 07:04

@Maggiethecat You'll be relieved to know my fingernails are very clean!

Phew! I can sleep well now.

My adult Dd and I get through a Sainsbury’s 16 pack a month. It used to cope with multiple DGD visits too but shrinkflation has made the rolls smaller. So 8 per month, 2 per week each. I am out at work sometimes. She is disabled and rarely out.

1 a day, if it’s one of the twice as much on one roll it will last me 2 days. H rarely craps. I can crap at the very least thrice a day, & P on average 6 times an hour.

Goodness, you pee every 10 minutes? That must be a nightmare to manage when you're out.

I thought I peed a lot (mainly due to a massive intake of tea), but nothing like that often.

I really noticed the increase in bog roll usage during lockdown, when we were both at home 24/7.

MoonlightMemories · 05/05/2025 08:01

I think I use about 1 roll (I always get the "double" ones) every 3-4 days, it does depend on if I'm at work or not though as obviously not going to use as much if I'm not at home. I've also got IBS as some other posters have and if I'm having a bad flare then one roll can easily only last maybe 2 days....it's not much fun feeling like you're nearly chained to the loo all day 🥴

Maggiethecat · 05/05/2025 08:17

The joys of examining your loo movements!
I was reminded on my first visit of the day that I put tissue in the loo before doing a poo to avoid potential splashes.

a “comfortable ball” is the exact phrase i was looking for
i therefore use minimum 2 (id say usually 3) comfortable balls per visit because i am unsettled at the thought of only wiping once

Using the loo has involved a different type of meditation today!
I counted the squares and a comfortable ball has about 6 of them, so each visit takes 12-18 squares.
I understand now why I get through loo rolls at a rate greater than most!

Haha. Just checked my fingernails as I only use 2 sheets. Glad to report they are clean.

When I was growing up, I was not allowed any more than 3 squares of loo roll... for anything.
So as an adult, I probably get through 2 to 3 rolls a week on my own. Life is too short for limiting loo roll use.

Same, hugs to you, reassuring to know I wasn't the only one.

We had loo roll rations at home, I was given a strip for each day.

I now use as much as I want, which is probably too much, but I never want that restriction again.

I’m thinking that this fixed number of squares thing is probably due to household rationing during childhood.
I can’t recall rationing but we did have rubbish quality ones and I reckon I’m making up for loo roll trauma!

I’m not sure how I would navigate that in some circumstances. Will leave it at that!

YourWinter · 05/05/2025 15:59

One Morrisons “longer” (not double) roll lasts me 5 days.

At least it's not hurting anyone. Nice loo roll and enough of it is a luxury.

I'm totally aware that my excess toilet roll usage is compensation for loo roll trauma in childhood.

However it is something I allow myself and I've always made sure there is enough in our house for my DS growing up and wouldn't dream of restricting its use.

The rationing in our house was imposed by my stepdad who was obsessed with the idea that using too much toilet paper might block the toilet, even though it never did.

Luckily my DH is supportive and understands my need to always feel like I have wiped enough to be clean.

We buy 48 rolls on subscription every 5 weeks, for 2 adults plus 2 DS, one of whom is at uni so only home in holidays. That averages at 1.37 rolls a day for all 3 (sometimes 4) of us, the 2 adults WFH mainly.

We bought a chest of drawers like this on a whim many years ago (Chinese medicine chest). Each drawer is divided into 3 sections. Guess what fits just perfectly?

What a brilliant idea

GlitteryUnicornSparkles · 05/05/2025 17:29

I’d say a week to just over a week at a guess without scrimping either.

Currently myself & my teenage son at home and I’d say we use 1 1/2 in a week. But he's in school all day and I’m in work so I probably use the toilet more there than at home.

AlmostSummer25 · 05/05/2025 18:35

Chickenwing2 · 04/05/2025 06:46

i think if you use less than 1 every 3/4 days you are not wiping properly. Ew.

ridiculous & offensive!
