And that he's no economist skills yet promising the impossible. And a racist. And mysoginist.

If Mumsnet is full of women, how is no-one talking about Reform and limiting women's rights?
I know I'll get flamed for this, but it is a boiling frog situation! Jump out!
And I didn't choose the AIBU board but I looked down all the Current Threads and this didn't feature.

There’s quite a few but that would be a big derail to the thread and we don’t want that do we?

What are your thoughts on the effectiveness of simply ‘tax the rich’ as an economic strategy?

Fear of derailing the thread is an odd thing to hide behind at this point but if that’s your preference then ok.

A three word slogan isn’t an economic strategy.

Lack of Muslim rejection or condemnation of grooming gangs? Like this you mean?

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-23087686

or this https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-south-yorkshire-28951612

or this https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/grooming-gang-newcastle-asian-pakistani-bangladeshi-muslim-response-faith-leaders-operation-shelter-police-convictions-a7888946.html

By your own logic the news should be full of men apologising for and condemning men every single day. But it’s not, weird that huh?

I don’t see many women apologising for Lucy Letby. Last time I went to hospital none of the nurses apologised for her or condemned her actions. I think this is a disgrace.

maybe the majority of law abiding Muslims felt they had nothing to do with the grooming gangs apart from the colour of their skin.

I will just leave you with a quote from the article I linked that you probably didn't read:

Here’s another example of life in hotels. I was working with a woman seeking asylum who was heavily pregnant.
Her room is on the second floor with no lift. It’s too small and she struggles to shower. She told us that she recently drank water from the tap of a hospital bathroom while waiting for a midwife appointment, because she doesn’t have a water bottle to carry water from the hotel around in.
Why couldn’t she buy a bottle of water? Because she’s been waiting months for an ASPEN card, a pre-paid bank card that holds her £9 week allowance. The only money she can access.
I’ve seen families wait several months to get an ASPEN card. That’s months dumped in a hotel with no money whatsoever.

But sure, you saw a video of some men smoking outside of a Travelodge so clearly they're all on holiday.

Goodnight.

These apocryphal stories are two-a-penny with NGOs.

I've posted real film footage of migrants smoking outside hotels.

you saw a video of some men smoking outside of a Travelodge so clearly they're all on holiday.

On holiday alright, most likely from Azerbijan.

bellsanddogwhistles · 07/05/2025 14:18

@springbirdss I was working with a woman seeking asylum who was heavily pregnant.

So why was she here?

France is a safe country where she could have had excellent medical care. Instead of which, she decided to get in a dinghy to England and risk not only her own life but the life of her unborn child.

That's just arrant stupidity.

I have no patience for such irresponsibility, especially when I as a taxpayer have to pay for it.

She might not have been pregnant when she arrived, and she might not have arrived in a small boat.

@Whatevernext9 She might not have been pregnant when she arrived, and she might not have arrived in a small boat.

So if she got pregnant here, where is the father and what is he doing about her? It begs the question "did she get pregnant deliberately to avoid deportation?"

Or are you telling me she's been waiting 8 months to be "processed" ? I thought Keir Starmer was going to recruit more staff and speed up asylum claims? I thought pregnant women asylum seekers were prioritised?

And, most important, if she didn't come on a small boats how did she get here, given that we're an island?

Because up to press no Government has had the cojones to come out of the UNHCR and make laws that benefit our citizens

What???

You do realise that the vast vast majority of immigration into this country, outside of Ukraine and the weird HK scheme, is for work?

Zilch to do with Human rights etc etc

Sunak let in over 1m immigrants in 2023, just about 34k boat people arrived.

Yes and it's dropped dramatically.

In 2024, there was a significant reduction in UK work visas granted, particularly for Skilled Worker visas and those for health and care workers. The number of Skilled Worker visas issued fell by 50% compared to 2023, and grants for health and care workers decreased by 68%. Overall, visa issuance for work, study, family reunification, and settlement schemes decreased by 33% compared to 2023.

And what has happened to that 34k "boat people" you mention?

Have all those engineers, doctors, scientists and architects now found gainful employment ?

Even with the 50% reduction, achieved under Labour... thats still 500k!

Significantly more than 34k, some of whom will still be hotels, some deported, some granted asylum.

The point here, which you've missed, is that we cannot stop people coming here in small boats, without risking drowning them and causing a huge rift with France/EU.

What would YOU do about X channel boats?

bellsanddogwhistles · 07/05/2025 16:15

@jasflowers I would arrest the driver of the boat for people trafficking and put all the migrants into secure holding buildings, where they can stay while awaiting deportation.
In the meantime they can be interviewd about who they paid to get them here.

The get basic food, no mobile phones, no spending money and no tobacco.

The driver of the boat has to tell Border Force the name of the traffickers otherwise he goes into solitary until he does.

And who cares about a rift with France? We have bunged them £millions and they still allow these people to launch.

There's now film footage of the French giving them life jackets midchannel - we are being taken for mugs and it has to stop.

If we left the UNHCR the UK would have more flexibility in interpreting and implementing its obligations under the 1951 Refugee Convention.

That will do for starters.

So you disagree with things like anti racism marches, or people saying ‘not in my name’? You think we shouldn’t intervene in racism or bigotry at work if we see it happening; as it’s not our fault?

@bellsanddogwhistles
Often there is no "driver of the boat..." its just another migrant.

Lock up where? Holding centres for 1000s of people, inc children, would be problematic, they don't exist.

Deport to where? We don't have returns agreements with many countries.

Rift with France? so they close the Tunnel and ferry ports, which they did or threatened too, during Covid, that would instantly cause a food shortage, they'll survive without our Cheddar.

The French could also stop all policing of the beaches, so even more could arrive.

I do agree that we probably give too much money etc France gives a lot less and healthcare to migrants that UK citizens struggle to get.. Dental treatment in particular, though i do not know if its emergency treatment only or a course of dental care.

Papyrophile · 07/05/2025 17:10

The cost of housing migrants has tripled to £4 million a day as Channel crossings continue to soar.
Data from the National Audit Office (NAO) has revealed that hotel and other accommodation contracts originally forecast to cost £4.5 billion between 2019 and 2029 are now expected to run to £15.3 billion over the same period, following a rise in Channel crossings and asylum claims.
In 2024/25 alone, the cost was £1.67 billion, equivalent to £4.6 million a day or £3,172 a minute.
The £15 billion would plug Labour’s proposed £5 billion cuts in benefits three times over, or pay for between 10 and 15 new hospitals.
It comes after The Telegraph revealed last week that senior figures in the Labour Government have blamed asylum hotels for fuelling the surge in support for Reform UK in the local elections.
The policy, inherited from the Tories after the surge in illegal small boat Channel crossings by migrants, is seen as “diabolical” in No 10.

Cut and pasted from the Telegraph as published at 4:53 today.

Then we need to make plans, big plans.

Build holding centres for these people. If we got rid of all the foreign crims in our jails we'd have room.

Get Border Force working on dry land. They need to raid every dodgy nail bar, "Turkish" Barbers shop, kebab house, "Indian" Takeaway etc and remove the illegals and fine the owners hard.
That should stop them being so keen to employ illegals.

Make plans to issue everyone with identity cards. Those who have nothing to hide, hide nothing. These have to be produced on request and certainly when people want jobs.

I went out campaigning for Reform and I can tell you that the anger among ordinary people is palpable. The three words we got on the doorstep were "immigration", Winter fuel" and "PIP".
If this government doesn't get a grip soon then people will start taking matters into their own hands.

Eventually they'll have to close the borders, and declare a state of emergency.

Am I the only one who can see we are being invaded weekly by 500+ undocumented young men who come from cultures that hate the UK only slightly more than they hate women?

I think you're being naive about the dingy driver - usually they get reduced rates for skippering the craft.

@Whatevernext9 And only a tiny proportion of asylum claims are from people who arrived in small boats.

Really?
From Migration Observatory.

A significant number of individuals arriving in the UK by small boats across the English Channel subsequently claim asylum. In the year ending June 2024, almost all small boat arrivals (99%) made an asylum claim, though a large portion of those claims were still undecided. These small boat arrivals accounted for nearly one-third of all asylum claims in the UK during the same period

Yes a third - so the majority were not from small boat arrivals. What’s your point?

@Whatevernext9 Aside from your lack of knowledge about the immigration system, can you fill us in on how Reform will deal with winter fuel and PIP?
