AIBU to think most people think of Ultravox if asked "Who sang Vienna?"
My DD reckons more people think of Billy Joel.(I didn't even know he had a much earlier single out called Vienna)
So my fellow Mumsnetters, tell me who you think of please?
Yanbu- Of course it's Ultravox.
Yabu- Billy Joel, you philistine.

Ultravox first, but I’m familiar with the Billy Joel track too.

Midge Ure (Ultravox). I didn’t even know Billy Joel did a version although I’m quite a fan of his too. Both were released before I was born.

they are completely separate songs.

My beautiful dog, who died too soon 💕

Who do you think of if I mention the song Vienna?
OfficerChurlish · 26/04/2025 20:47

They're two completely different songs that happen to have the same title. I thought of both and wondered which one you meant. Very generally, though, I'd expect a British person to think of Ultravox/Ure first and an American to be more likely to think of Joel. Both go back quite a way though, and may not be familiar to younger people.

PassingStranger · 26/04/2025 20:47

Rigsbys cat in rising damp was called Vienna, so your both wrong.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 26/04/2025 20:48

Billy Joel. I'm 40 if that's useful information! I do know of the Ultravox one though.

To PP, Billy didn't cover Ultravox's song, he wrote a different song also called Vienna.

BoredZelda · 26/04/2025 20:48

Just did a test.

15 yo DD and 50 yo DH. Said the word Vienna and asked them to say which artist.

DD said Billy Joel, DH said “Freddie Mercury, Queen, ahh no I was thinking of Barcelona. Ultravox.”

For me it was Midge Ute.

HauntedBungalow · 26/04/2025 20:48

Ultravox = Vienna

Billy Joel = Leningrad, like the filthy Commie he is

BoredZelda · 26/04/2025 20:48

*Ure

ColinOfficeTrolley · 26/04/2025 20:48

Ezkay · 26/04/2025 20:39

No 🤣
He has an album track called Vienna that's totally different to Ultravox.

TikTok is apparently awash with the Billy Joel version. My 14 year old was amazed I had it on a little silver disc I keep in a plastic case 🤭

Thank you!!! I've never heard it! I must be on the wrong side of tiktok 😬

Purplecatshopaholic · 26/04/2025 20:49

Midge Ure in a trenchcoat comes to mind. I had no idea about the Billy Joel song.

Mickeychampionwhatgoodami · 26/04/2025 20:49

Ultravox.. Vienna released 1980.
Thanks Google.👍😁

LaDamaDeElche · 26/04/2025 20:51

I thought Freddy Mercury sang it for a long time! I was a baby when it came out, so had never actually seen the video.

Uricon2 · 26/04/2025 20:51

The Vox and Midge. Saw them live several times, they were brilliant.

ETA I'm early 60s.

ZeppelinTits · 26/04/2025 20:51

Midge Ure. Had no idea about Billy Joel. I’m 41.

ClaredeBear · 26/04/2025 20:51

Clicked the wrong button - Ultravox!

EBearhug · 26/04/2025 20:52

Ultravox.

shellyleppard · 26/04/2025 20:52

Always uultravox for me ❤️

AgnesX · 26/04/2025 20:53

I was listening to Hymn earlier (all the religious imagery today I think). Midge could definitely sing an anthem 🥰

Somethingthecatdraggedin7 · 26/04/2025 20:54

My thought is oh god make it stop. Bloody awful song was in the charts forever. It still makes my teeth itch even now to think of midge ure wailing away.

BashfulClam · 26/04/2025 20:54

Uncle Midge 😉

Ezkay · 26/04/2025 20:54

ColinOfficeTrolley · 26/04/2025 20:48

Thank you!!! I've never heard it! I must be on the wrong side of tiktok 😬

I share the same TikTok ignorance 😉

My DD was singing it so I found the album CD in the cupboard (resulting in having to explain what a CD is 🤭), then played the Ultravox song being one of my all time faves. I was told in no uncertain terms 'her' Vienna was better. 🤭

HauntedBungalow · 26/04/2025 20:55

Apparently so-called "Midge" got his name because (he reckons) it's "Jim" backwards. I wonder if anyone has ever pointed out to his small moustachioed self that actually it is "Egdim" backwards.

TheGrimSmile · 26/04/2025 20:57

I didn't even know Billy Joel had covered it!

NW3Lady · 26/04/2025 20:57

EmeraldRoulette · 26/04/2025 20:45

they are completely separate songs.

Sorry, I hadn’t appreciated that.
