To think that Spanish is a ridiculous language?

Sorry to any spanish speakers. But I just wanted a mimor moan.

I've lived in France and Italy before. I thought the French and Italian languages were totally fine. They make sense. I became quite good at speaking Italian with the locals.

I'm in Spain on holiday. I've come to Spain many times on holiday, and so I'm always trying to learn Spanish a bit.

It's just such a crazy language.

Why is every word so long. Why are there so many changes for every word. Why does it sound like babble. Add to that, it's spoken extremely fast. Apparently it's the second fastest spoken language.

I was actually just talking about this to some Spanish people at a group here. They agreed that it's a very difficult language.

They said that everything is said in a much longer way than in English.

For example "Star wars" in Spanish, is "la guerra de galactica"

I think Spanish is easier to learn than French.

countrygirl99 · 25/04/2025 09:59

Don't even look at Finnish if you think Spanish is difficult.

UniqueRedSquid · 25/04/2025 10:10

To think it’s ‘ridiculous’, not say ‘difficult’ or ‘complex’.

Yes, you are very unreasonable.

KnickerlessParsons · 25/04/2025 10:10

Or German.
Spanish isn’t that hard if you already know French and Italian.

WindingStair · 25/04/2025 10:13

You’re being deeply unreasonable. Spanish is a lovely and very straightforward language to learn. The grammar is overwhelmingly regular, the pronunciation is pretty obvious. I also came to Spanish via French and Italian and I don’t understand what you’re struggling with so much.

The example you give is a completely literal translation.

OneTC · 25/04/2025 10:14

Do you not find it kinda close enough to Italian that it helps?

I struggle with the pronunciation and the speed, and find it easier to listen to my Columbian and Argentinian friends than my Spanish friends, but that's a me problem

Hoppinggreen · 25/04/2025 10:16

Its a lovely language, the only issue I have with it is the bloody verb endings, so many!!!
German is harder

Octonaut4Life · 25/04/2025 10:16

I'm about a year into learning Spanish, it's an awful lot easier than most other languages I've tried learning over the years. Doesn't have the grammatical complexity of some other European languages and is quite structurally similar to English which helps a lot as a learner.

No, you are right LA Spanish is much easier in many cases.
My Spanish is pretty good but even DH and The DC who don't speak much found Mexico easier than Spain - I did get the piss taken out of my "Iberian accent" though.

SnoozingFox · 25/04/2025 10:20

Spanish speaker here (not native).

It is a much much easier language to learn than English, German or French. There are rules about pronunciation which mean that even if you have never seen a word before you know what it sounds like. Unlike English - cough, rough, though, through.

I am not sure what you mean by "changes for every word" - verbs change according to tense obviously as they do in every language - I am, I was, I will be, I shall be etc. Two genders of noun - male/female unlike German where there is a third of neuter.

ANY language sounds machine gun fast when you are not used to listening to native speakers.

"For example "Star wars" in Spanish, is "la guerra de galactica" - no it's not. It's La Guerra de las Galaxias. Literally the war of the galaxies. I assume they went for galaxies not stars to get the alliteration.

BobbyBiscuits · 25/04/2025 10:20

I can understand and learn Spanish easier than Italian. For me Italians don't use any spaces between words when they speak? I learnt it for a year and have been a few times but I found communication very difficult.

I love Spanish. Spain, Spanish people. Fantastic place with gorgeous culture, scenery and weather. Wonderful food and people who seem laid back and happy to help you learn the lingo.

Not like in France where they always claim they can't understand a word you're saying. Haha. No, maybe that's just Parisians. I have French family and they agree on that front.

Ammadam · 25/04/2025 10:20

Straightforward language to learn?

Well I was speaking to a lot of other English speakers and French speakers here in Spain, and they all told me that they find it very difficult to learn spanish.

It is a difficult language. It has so many word changes.

This is my experience. Knowing French gave me a definite advantage in learning Spanish. Gender agreement in Spanish is something extra to think about, but once you know your Os and your As it's just a case of practicing. I love languages, and trying very hard to learn more Spanish before the summer hols!

TheNightingalesStarling · 25/04/2025 10:22

It amuses me that a simple sentence like "tu bebes leche" could mean different things depending on tone or punctuation.

arcticpandas · 25/04/2025 10:22

Spanish is so easy to pronounciate, you say it like it spells. As for French "locaux" you say loco. So many sounds you don't pronociate.

Clearinguptheclutter · 25/04/2025 10:23

You’re massively unreasonable

I’m a French grad who went on to learn Spanish, it’s a lot easier, it’s almost entirely phonetic for starters.

I do agree that Spanish people speak extremely fast, but I think Spanish would say the same about English

BadahdahdahImLovingIt · 25/04/2025 10:23

To describe it as ridiculous is harsh, have a look at the structure of English language for a while and get back to me.

Spanish is quite fascinating as it has been influenced quite a lot by Arabic from the time of the Muslim era on the Iberian peninsula (8th - 15th c). It's why some of it doesn't tie in with other Romance languages.

I think it's la guerra de la galactica.

A local spanish person told me that is what it is. He was using it to demonstrate how much longer spanish sentences are than English sentences.

If you look up the star wars wikipedia spanish fan page it says "guerra galactica"

I found Spanish an easy language to learn - much easier than any other language I’ve tried. Admittedly I did know some French and Italian first, but I would say Spanish is easier than either of those.

Try Polish if you want a language where the words are constantly changing…

ThePoshUns · 25/04/2025 10:23

TheNightingalesStarling · 25/04/2025 10:24

Ateast it uses the roman alphabet. Try Greek.

Spanish isn’t that hard if you already know French and Italian.

At school the better French speakers did GCSE Spanish in 2 years and the teacher was actually French (although she lived in Spain for many years). She often taught from French to Spanish and left out English altogether as some concepts were easier to explain.

worrisomeasset · 25/04/2025 10:25

I reckon it’s a lot easier to learn than English. English is just bonkers.

SnoozingFox · 25/04/2025 10:25

Experts disagree that Spanish is difficult. It's one of the easiest.

If you have learned a bit of Italian and French than I fail to see how Spanish is so much harder. I speak Spanish fluently, French less so, and Italian just a wee bit, and there is so much similarity between the structure of all three.

TheGrimSmile · 25/04/2025 10:25

Actually I think having longer words makes it easier to learn. My Spanish ex boyfriend said that English was difficult - especially British English- because it sounds so "choppy"; we have lots of one syllable words which makes it harder to follow a sentence as you move very quickly onto the next word before you've figured out the last one. So in Spanish, you have more time to process. I thought about it and we do have a lot of one syllable words compared to other languages. Another Spaniard also told me that English people always sound tired 😆 I used to say that Spanish always sound like they are arguing.
