To think that Spanish is a ridiculous language?

Sorry to any spanish speakers. But I just wanted a mimor moan.

I've lived in France and Italy before. I thought the French and Italian languages were totally fine. They make sense. I became quite good at speaking Italian with the locals.

I'm in Spain on holiday. I've come to Spain many times on holiday, and so I'm always trying to learn Spanish a bit.

It's just such a crazy language.

Why is every word so long. Why are there so many changes for every word. Why does it sound like babble. Add to that, it's spoken extremely fast. Apparently it's the second fastest spoken language.

I was actually just talking about this to some Spanish people at a group here. They agreed that it's a very difficult language.

They said that everything is said in a much longer way than in English.

For example "Star wars" in Spanish, is "la guerra de galactica"

Love the language and culture. Structurally it's certainly simpler than French or Italian. However agree on the speed. It's utterly breathtaking (certainly Castilian) I can read it to a decent level (undergraduate) but watching a film or participating in a conversation; very tricky. Latin American Spanish does feel a little less rushed. My Madrileño colleagues talk faster than I do when speaking English (I'm a native English speaker not known for communicating slowly).

I’m from a part of Ireland renowned for speaking very fast, which may help me with Madrileño speed!

PassingStranger · 25/04/2025 13:40

I would love to be able to speak it.

You’re right about the features that are simple in English, but as a primary teacher I am reminded daily of the sheer craziness of our spelling and pronunciation system. I can still remember my astonishment many decades ago when I learned that the number 1 is spelled ‘one’. It didn’t, and still doesn’t, make any sense whatsoever.

Agreed. My Spanish ex was incredulous that any child in England could actually learn to read. Phonetically it's crazy

here", but it also says it in 3 other languages. One is obviously Basque- "Hemengoa izatea ona da"- definitely from its own galaxy, that one. The other two say "E bon que sexa de aqui" and "Es bo que sigui d'aqui". I've always assumed that one of those is Catalan- although I'm not sure which- but then what's the other? Someone suggested Aragonese to me, but I'm now pondering Gallego....?

I think in order you have Basque, Gallego and Catalan although I could be wrong. Deffo the first one is Basque.

If in doubt try Portuguese

Charlotte120221 · 25/04/2025 13:51

OP you’re not much of a linguist if you think Spanish is harder than French and English?

your example of to go and ir is poor. Think about the past tense in English!!!

How would you explain the pronunciation of ‘ough’ in English?! Spanish is 100% phonetic.

i could go on…..

lifeisgoodrightnow · 25/04/2025 13:53

Spanish is lovely and a lot easier than French in my opinion. It Aldi means I’ve a good understanding of Italian despite never having studied it. They do chop off words though but you get used to it. For example ¡hasta luego! Becomes ‘sta luego ( sense you later ) etc . I love how they have rules for grammar and stick to them it’s a lovely logical language.

In Cornwall, Star Wars is locally known as "Stargazy Scat Up", and the Ewoks are all from Newlyn. The Death Star is represented by the Chiverton Cross roundabout.

But anyhoo....now that all the MN Spanish and the languages of Spain experts are gathered together, I have a question. I have a treasured bag for life that I picked up from Eroski in Bilbao last year. It says "Es bueno que sia de aqui" - which I assume is "It's good to be from here", but it also says it in 3 other languages. One is obviously Basque- "Hemengoa izatea ona da"- definitely from its own galaxy, that one. The other two say "E bon que sexa de aqui" and "Es bo que sigui d'aqui". It means "it's good that it's from here" - local food and produce, I am assuming

No, I think they're all Spanish languages.

HamptonPlace · 25/04/2025 14:03

Hoppinggreen · 25/04/2025 10:17

No, you are right LA Spanish is much easier in many cases.
My Spanish is pretty good but even DH and The DC who don't speak much found Mexico easier than Spain - I did get the piss taken out of my "Iberian accent" though.

Same, my mexican friend deriding 'castilian' pronunciation...

TinyTear · 25/04/2025 14:04

Definitely not Portuguese, that would be

É bom que seja de aqui

or

É bom que seja daqui

crackofdoom · 25/04/2025 14:02

Fair enough :-) I didn’t bother google translating I just know there always seems to be Portuguese on Spanish food labels etc .

FartfulCodger · 25/04/2025 14:08

I learned French and Italian and later Spanish. I find it really easy to pick up conversational Spanish, took about a week before I could hold a decent conversation - that’s just how my brain works and languages are the only thing I’m good at so I don’t mind boasting. But I agree with you that there are some things that are tricky in Spanish. Lots of different tenses for example. But on the whole probably a great deal easier than English which is quite tricky.

Finnoula · 25/04/2025 14:36

Wow - La Guerra de las mujeres internet 😂😂

Yo no conozco a ninguna que piense que el Inglés es fácil de aprender

BitOutOfPractice · 25/04/2025 14:40

@lifeisgoodrightnow i quite like “sense you later”. I might try and use It!

You are entitled to your lived opinion. As am I.

You are entitled to your opinion. 'lived' is a tautology.

Just popped back on.

Well three, four, five, six, seven, nine and ten all make sense phonetically .

Maybe one two and eight made pronunciation sense at the time ages ago, in old English.

I wonder about the origins of languages, how languages started.

Like how long did it take them to come up with a language. And how did they get everyone to agree to using it

Who is the ‘them’?

Ammadam · 25/04/2025 15:03

WindingStair · 25/04/2025 15:02

Who is the ‘them’?

The people that developed the language. When the language started.

There are so many languages in Europe. The history of languages is interesting.

For example I read that for some time they thought that yhe basque language in northern Spain is not similar to any other language.

But now they've seen similiarites between basque and the Armenian language. So it looks like maybe Armenians travelled to north Spain and brought some of the language with them

Just putting my 2 mil pesos in....I live in a Spanish speaking country and I find the language extremely difficult. And I am fluent in French. It could be my fossilised brain not coping, or the fact that I haven't done the donkey work (learning the grammar properly) as I am lazy, but the changes with gender endings - although French has these - are endlessly confusing and the frankly baffling tenses defeat me. My teacher has a job for life ! However my best friend (Australian, no second language) speaks like a native and even gets the jokes so I do know that is more a me problem than the language per se. I understand virtually everything but cannot reciprocate properly which is frustrating and I do want to make progress with that. I blame listening to too much R4 🤭
