To think that Spanish is a ridiculous language?

Sorry to any spanish speakers. But I just wanted a mimor moan.

I've lived in France and Italy before. I thought the French and Italian languages were totally fine. They make sense. I became quite good at speaking Italian with the locals.

I'm in Spain on holiday. I've come to Spain many times on holiday, and so I'm always trying to learn Spanish a bit.

It's just such a crazy language.

Why is every word so long. Why are there so many changes for every word. Why does it sound like babble. Add to that, it's spoken extremely fast. Apparently it's the second fastest spoken language.

I was actually just talking about this to some Spanish people at a group here. They agreed that it's a very difficult language.

They said that everything is said in a much longer way than in English.

For example "Star wars" in Spanish, is "la guerra de galactica"

Its a lovely language, the only issue I have with it is the bloody verb endings, so many!!!
German is harder

While this is true there are clear patterns. You can get away with not knowing all of them if speaking French as some sound the same eg tu es/il est
no Spaniard serving a tourist is going to have a go at your or not understand you just for getting your conjugation wrong however

TheGrimSmile · 25/04/2025 10:27

Spanish is also quite easy because it's entirely phonetic. Once you learn the basic rules, you can pronounce anything- unlike English and French.

doodleschnoodle · 25/04/2025 10:27

I think everyone finds it differently. I find German much easier than French for example, I am just much more naturally able. Something about French makes me struggle, even though everyone always says French is easier! Not for the way my brain works! Last time I was in France I ended up speaking German to someone as rhey didn’t speak much English, my French is nowhere near functional outside of limited scenarios, but we discovered we could both speak decent German! Straightforward language to learn?

Well I was speaking to a lot of other English speakers and French speakers here in Spain, and they all told me that they find it very difficult to learn spanish.

It is a difficult language. It has so many word changes.

What do you mean by ‘word changes’? It doesn’t have cases like, for instance, German, so that words morph according to whether they are in the accusative, dative etc.

MrsMoastyToasty · 25/04/2025 10:28

I did Spanish and French to A level about 40 years ago. Spanish is a whole lot easier.
In written Spanish you know when a question is being asked or an exclamation is being made because of the upside down question mark or exclamation mark at the start of the sentence. All words are phonetic so there's no silent letters like "pn" in pneumonia.

The numbering system is easier (none of the quartre vingt- literally translates as 4 twenties- for 80 that you get in French)

ErrolTheDragon · 25/04/2025 10:28

Any anglophone person calling another language (especially Spanish which is generally recognised as being one of the more logical ones) is a very dirty pot calling a relatively clean kettle black.😂
(i love the bonkersness of English btw)

mindutopia · 25/04/2025 10:28

I think Spanish is quite easy. It’s very phonetic and the rules are quite sensible. And words are quite short. However, not all people in Spain are speaking Spanish. It might be Catalan, for example, which is close but not Spanish.

SnoozingFox · 25/04/2025 10:29

I think it's la guerra de la galactica.

Think what you like, it's not.

And besides, the brand "Star Wars" is now so huge and widely recognised that most Spanish speakers would use the English phrase.

ExquisiteSocialSkills · 25/04/2025 10:30

UniqueRedSquid · 25/04/2025 10:10

To think it’s ‘ridiculous’, not say ‘difficult’ or ‘complex’.

Yes, you are very unreasonable.

This.

My French is quite fluent, if slightly rusty (I lived in Paris for a few years a long time ago), but I’m still a baby about numbers over the telephone😱.

Well I didnt come up with it did I

A spanish person told me that is what it is. So are you saying that they are wrong?

I went online to look.

It also literally says its "la guerra de galactica" on the spanish Wikipedia page"

Apparently French and Spanish are the easiest to master for English native speakers. I have learned both.

You should try learning Turkish. Way harder!

TonTonMacoute · 25/04/2025 10:31

I don't agree that is is ridiculous, but I both French and Italian straightforward to learn, I just did not get Spanish at all. Apparently Italians and the Spanish can understand each others language quite well, which I find interesting.

So can you speak Spanish fluently?

Yes, the English speakers and the French speakers, both known for their proficiency in other languages.

Your choice of the word “ridiculous” rather than eg “different to English” or “complex”
is ignorant, offensive and borderline racist.

I think it's la guerra de la galactica.

A local spanish person told me that is what it is. He was using it to demonstrate how much longer spanish sentences are than English sentences.

If you look up the star wars wikipedia spanish fan page it says "guerra galactica"

Wut

DuckieDodgyHedgyPiggy · 25/04/2025 10:32

I was inspired to start learning Spanish after I went on holiday and found myself able to translate some graffiti. I already knew French and doubtless that helped. (It was "One thousand machines will never make a flower". Most of the words were similar to English and French - mille, una flore etc.) I learnt it for a couple of years. I think YABU. They do speak fast though. But so do we! And we mumble. And some British accents are hard for us too!

SnoozingFox · 25/04/2025 10:32

BadahdahdahImLovingIt · 25/04/2025 10:23

To describe it as ridiculous is harsh, have a look at the structure of English language for a while and get back to me.

Spanish is quite fascinating as it has been influenced quite a lot by Arabic from the time of the Muslim era on the Iberian peninsula (8th - 15th c). It's why some of it doesn't tie in with other Romance languages.

This is true - many Spanish words starting with "Al" come directly from the Arabic.

algodon - cotton, alfombra - carpet, almohada - pillow, almacen - warehouse etc etc (sorry no accents on this keyboard!!!)

TheGrimSmile · 25/04/2025 10:33

worrisomeasset · 25/04/2025 10:25

I reckon it’s a lot easier to learn than English. English is just bonkers.

English is easy in many ways: we don't have gender; we don't have to make adjectives agree with the noun; the only time the verbal ending changes is for third person singular eg: I walk, you walk, he walks, they walk, we walk - it's all the same apart from he or she - unlike French and spanish; we only have one form of "you" - no polite or plural form. "The" doesn't change depending on how many/ what gender a noun is. I could go on....but English is very difficult to learn the rules of pronunciation as they are so irregular.

OMGitsnotgood · 25/04/2025 10:33

Well yes but if the person you are talking about and/or when the event happened/will happen is based on verb endings its more tricky
I do agree though that for basic tourist Spanish its not an issue

With regards to Italian I struggled with it a bit at first as it was similar enough to Spanish to confuse me and different enough that I had to learn a lot of new words but once it clicked I found it reasonably easy, I think doing latin at school (although it was many years ago) helped at bit.
Portuguese was quite easy as I know Spanish, French and as mentioned above Latin. Written is easier as spoken Portuguese is quite hard to understand, for me at least

As someone who speaks both, I think French feels less logical than Spanish.

BreakingGood48 · 25/04/2025 10:34

Oh really? I'm surprised by that, much easier than French in my opinion and I like that basically everything sounds exactly how it is written which makes things a lot easier!
