To ask what the most BRILLIANT advice/suggestion you've seen on here is?

Inspired by the other thread with a similar title!

Maybe not advice/suggestion as such, but I wouldn't have got my Mirena coil had I not been persuaded by the balance of views on here and enough positive feedback that it could work out well. It has been lifechanging, I wish I had done it 20 years ago, I could have avoided years of pain.

My new one is tretinoin. It's only been a few weeks but I already think I will be using this for the rest of my life. Why have I spent so much money on expensive and less efficacious creams?

Without wanting to control the direction of the thread, I wasn't thinking of LTB type advice. More immediately implementable things that someone could try today! (Although MN has definitely educated me in matters such as 'the script', narcissism, emotional abuse, and trans/gender critical matters!)

It is pretty good, and is also useful for emergency spot cleaning of clothes. (I also use it on spots).
I think there is a specific product for removing sticky residue, but it's a bit industrial-strength. Goo Gone Adhesive Remover 12oz (355ml)

I have a bottle of this, not as big and not a spray. I don’t think it was especially cheap but I’ve had it at least 5 years, have used it loads and it’s still about 80% full.

Why would you need to chatgpt a run baba recipe? There are thousands online and in recipe books already.

Cut an avocado in half, slice it whilst it's still in the skin (not slicing THROUGH the skin though) and scoop out perfect slices with a dessert spoon. Et voila! Also, if you're using only half an avocado, keep the stone in the 'spare' half and it will stop avocado going brown.

& if you're only using half the avocado, cut it across instead of lengthwise - less flesh is exposed to the air, & leave the stone in as above.
I also use the skin of the half I've used as part of the covering for the saved half.

Best tip ever from MN.

Seems strange and goes against all instincts... but when a small child is about to be sick, point them towards yourself and get them to be sick on you.

Much easier to throw your clothes in the wash and jump in the shower than scrub the sick out of your sofa/carpet/mattress/car seats.

ColourlessGreenIdeasSleepFuriously · 26/04/2025 11:46

Good one. Fobd memories of using my cleavage as a sick bowl at 3 am to avoid paying a massive airbnb cleaning fee 😅

Eww. No way. I like to at least give myself a fighting chance of avoiding norovirus, 😂

Small child sick is rarely norovirus.

It's a tip that worked well for me ... each to their own i guess.

Sorry, I didn't mean to be dismissive. It's just a really hate sick (except baby puke that is just milk) and the thought of deliberately covering myself in it is enough to have me scrubbing myself in dettol. But as you say, if it works for you - horses for courses.

Makes perfect sense.

I hate vomit so much that I will sacrifice a towel to the bin instead of washing it.

Another useful vomit tip is to pour some cups of flour or oats onto vomit. It’s easier to clean up when it’s more absorbed into a whole substance than sloppy liquid. Still gross. 🤢

Crikeyalmighty · 26/04/2025 13:19

@Roxy69 I use mine on cottage pie the time- I like it because it’s quite ‘stiff’ if you don’t overdo the water so works really well Asa topping with cheese on top of it - I always add white pepper to it

Are you from outside the uk? I am not familiar with this particular mash.

It's sold in B&M

I wish I hadn't read this after a post about baby vomit

Actually this is a good tip if the child is upright and awake.

DH was once woken up by a co-sleeping toddler being sick in his ear.... the overflow down his neck was something to behold, not to mention his beard!

Peeling ginger with a teaspoon, brilliant tip. Also hob boiling or microwaving potatoes in a rice cooker whole in their skins, halving and pressing through a one of those cooling rack grid things. Microwave the spud with milk, butter etc & mash, makes mashed potatoes easy without all the peeling faff. However, must get some frozen mash to try and what is Idaho mash? Is it available in the UK & is it like Smash or better?
Frozen peppers, onions, soffrito, berries. Great time & energy saving tip ,👍. Tried frozen avocados, hmmm even in a heavily dollied up guacamole there was a very weird chemically taste, almost like overripe bananas. Counter top dishwasher for my smallish kitchen.

Idaho mash comes in packets and various flavours. It’s in most UK supermarkets. I find it absolutely delicious. I think it’s quite calorific, no wonder it’s really nice.

CherryRipe1 · 25/04/2025 13:34

Yes same here, I'm always looking for tips and shortcuts. Do you add boiling water to the Idaho mash (btw a lady on the autoimmune boards said Aldi are doing a kettle tipper next week in the middle isle!)? I'm sure it's fine in fish, cottage and shepherds pies once browned in the oven or with cheese on top😊

The instructions say to pour the boiling water into the bowl then add the powder.

CherryRipe1 · 26/04/2025 15:35

@Cherrysoup Thanks fellow Cherry! I'm definitely going to try it. 😊

I agree, when superking exists!

Edited

Well, thats a bit snide. There’s a lot of obvious reasons why people might not have superking beds.

We'd need a house with bigger bedrooms.

@Leafy3 oh Christ - bad timing by me- my H once went on the tube with it all down the back of his jacket and hadn’t noticed as it was 8.20 am and left before I saw him ‘from the back’

shinyblackdog · 26/04/2025 18:49

Quite recently someone posted about shampooing twice to extend time between hair washes, which I had previously thought was a ploy by shampoo manufacturers to make people use more. But now I wash my hair every three days rather than every two days and exercise more in the extra time!

frozen mash is brilliant for cottage or fish pie - it comes in pellet like tubes that are about a centimetre in diameter & 4-5 cm long, so you just lay them on top for a brilliant ridged finish that browns really well and looks as if you've piped it on.

I've never thought of frozen mash - don't know why, I'll give it a go, thanks.
