To ask what the most BRILLIANT advice/suggestion you've seen on here is?

Inspired by the other thread with a similar title!

Maybe not advice/suggestion as such, but I wouldn't have got my Mirena coil had I not been persuaded by the balance of views on here and enough positive feedback that it could work out well. It has been lifechanging, I wish I had done it 20 years ago, I could have avoided years of pain.

My new one is tretinoin. It's only been a few weeks but I already think I will be using this for the rest of my life. Why have I spent so much money on expensive and less efficacious creams?

Without wanting to control the direction of the thread, I wasn't thinking of LTB type advice. More immediately implementable things that someone could try today! (Although MN has definitely educated me in matters such as 'the script', narcissism, emotional abuse, and trans/gender critical matters!)

Peeling ginger with a teaspoon, brilliant tip. Also hob boiling or microwaving potatoes in a rice cooker whole in their skins, halving and pressing through a one of those cooling rack grid things. Microwave the spud with milk, butter etc & mash, makes mashed potatoes easy without all the peeling faff. However, must get some frozen mash to try and what is Idaho mash? Is it available in the UK & is it like Smash or better?
Frozen peppers, onions, soffrito, berries. Great time & energy saving tip ,👍. Tried frozen avocados, hmmm even in a heavily dollied up guacamole there was a very weird chemically taste, almost like overripe bananas. Counter top dishwasher for my smallish kitchen.

I knew this was going to be brought up!

I made up every single bottle like this (I mean in cooled boiled water), signed off by my health visitor so while I'm sure this is true, I would also say that doing a personal risk assessment, i.e. that the water is clean, I'm confident that manufacturers are following rules and regs etc., my mental health is also important and if it makes me cry trying to prep a bottle in the moment when my baby is crying then I'll do it this way.

Incidentally I wonder if the risk has ever been proven? Food standards agency says around 3k babies are admitted to hospital with intestinal issues but I don't think that it can be concluded that it's all (or any) from formula not put in boiling water. Difficult to assess I suppose.

advice changes all the time on new borns, babies etc

I was able to give cows milk and stop sterilising at 6 months, because the advice was different. So from 6 months onwards I didn't sterilise and gave cows milk not follow on milk. I was also able to make up 6 bottles daily and keep in the fridge, just pop into water to warm before feeding, cot bumpers were just being phased out.

Now I have grandchildren and for whatever reason ( sometimes I fail to find the science behind the changes) the advice has changed and acceptance of that is really important to relationships with new parents

Does anyone have any tips for removing leftover sticky residue (from labels) off plastic please? 🤞🏼

White spirit (like you would use to clean paintbrushes) will wipe it off easy peasy.
You can get it from most hardware shops or DIY places like B&Q.

For cleaning off weird things, I always try:
Hot water and fairy liquid
Acetone (nail varnish remover)
White spirit

(don't mix these substances btw, try one after the other!)

Most things will come off with one of those!

GoodQueenBess · 25/04/2025 10:55

@forrestfrankfan White spirit and acetone will melt some plastics.
Try non-acetone nail varnish remover instead.

Hot water will set a lot of stains. Use tepid water instead.
Soap/washing-up liquid is pretty good.

does anyone know the best way to get rid of unknown stains on uniform etc?

DD has weird brownish-grey stains on uniform that can't be bleached (not white tops, pale blue, red etc) - I've tried scrubbing with washing power (bio), leaving washing up liquid into soak, stain remover scrubber things. never washed higher than 30

Going to try white vinegar, but didn't know if MN coud share some wisdom?

the most annoying thing is she stained her brand new Rainbows t-shirt on day 1, right underneath the logo , so it looks awfu!

NetballHoop · 25/04/2025 11:21

Isopropyl "Rubbing" alcohol works wonders on plastic that has gone sticky.

Our WiFi box had gone sticky with time and anything I used to tyr and clean it just made it worse. A bit of rubbing alcohol on an old rag and it all came off easily.

GoodQueenBess · 25/04/2025 11:22

@TropicofCapricorn , Elbow Grease spray is great for removing stains. Spray it on before it goes in the washing machine.
Elbow Grease All Purpose Degreaser Spray - ASDA Groceries

There's an Ariel stain remover that's good, but I've not used it for years.

Hand sanitizer is pretty good too.

Try anything on an inconspicuous area first.

This probably won't work for old stains but for fresh ones, I use Ace Ultra for Colours. You're supposed to add it to the wash but I decant some into a spray bottle then just spray straight onto a stain and leave until it starts to visibly dissolve. I've never found a stain it didn't work on and it's gentle on colours despite being so effective.

Are they stains or where a bleaching agent has removed part of the dye? I'm forever getting bleach marks on clothes and I still have no idea how!

Cut an avocado in half, slice it whilst it's still in the skin (not slicing THROUGH the skin though) and scoop out perfect slices with a dessert spoon. Et voila! Also, if you're using only half an avocado, keep the stone in the 'spare' half and it will stop avocado going brown.

Roxy69 · 25/04/2025 13:21

I use Idaho plain mash occasionally as I have arthritis in my hands and can't peel potatoes. I've never used Smash so can't compare, but it's edible. You know it's not real but apart from the cost, considering what a real potato would cost; it's not bad.

Yes same here, I'm always looking for tips and shortcuts. Do you add boiling water to the Idaho mash (btw a lady on the autoimmune boards said Aldi are doing a kettle tipper next week in the middle isle!)? I'm sure it's fine in fish, cottage and shepherds pies once browned in the oven or with cheese on top😊

Ooh I've thought of one!
If you have Amazon Prime delivery and also hello fresh then you can link the two up to get free delivery all year on your Hello Fresh boxes.. I was so pleased when I saw that tip on here

A poster recommended the Aircraft scrubber, it’s brilliant for bathroom/kitchen tiles, totally renovated my alloys, does my textured laminate, in fact, the only thing that works bar hand scrubbing! Laminate is an absolute trauma to clean with multiple dogs. It lasts for a 20x10 kitchen, ruddy hard work, but so worth it.

I think this was me, so pleased!

Alcohol gel

It is pretty good, and is also useful for emergency spot cleaning of clothes. (I also use it on spots).
I think there is a specific product for removing sticky residue, but it's a bit industrial-strength. Goo Gone Adhesive Remover 12oz (355ml)

@IBelieveinSomething what model mower is that? One that didn't need boundary wires would be a dream, haven't bought one as have 3 different lawn areas and it's just too much hassle but would be much easier to just move one around from lawn to lawn, don't mind doing that bit manually but the faff of having to wire the whole lot is too much hassle!

Yes, just off the boil usually. It's fine if you add something to it, like butter and pepper otherwise I find it a bit bland. I've not tried it as a topping but I'm sure it would be fine. Thanks for that tip about the kettle stand. 😀
