I do have a genuine concern about musclebound, beardy transwomen now needing to be in women's toilets and changing rooms. On a practical level they aren't the same level of threat to women as transwomen are, but two things bother me.

One, my concerns about someone presenting as male being in female spaces are still relevant. I don't know that someone who looks like a man is actually a transman.

Two, how will we deal with them? Legally they're protected from discrimination and harassment. Just as it's wrong to challenge someone with a blue badge because they "don't look disabled enough" to need one, surely a transman can't be challenged and doesn't need to explain themselves when they use a women's toilet or changing room. I guess we could call the police but it would leave us open to legal action if it turned out they were a transman just exercising their legal right (and now obligation) to use the women's facilities.

This is a real concern because what's to stop a man coming into a women's changing room insisting they are actually a transman? Some businesses will be reluctant to enforce checks on genuine transmen because they can't discriminate against them. This means they can't place additional checks on someone claiming to be a transman that they don't check with people who claim and appear to be female.

I think the recent ruling is necessary and sensible in its requirements on segregation around birth sex but I fear that for as long as there is legal protection for transpeople to not face discrimination or harassment there will always be loopholes the unscrupulous can drive a bus through.

I'm not saying they should lose this legal protection of course, it's just I don't see how trans rights are fully compatible with women's rights.

This was covered in the judgement. Transmen can be removed from womens spaces too, if they pass. That is actual discrimination, but of course, TRAs only focus on transwomen.

It’s not about women who are transgender.

It’s about these imaginary cis men who were all going to rock up to the ladies loo wearing a dress, pretending to be trans women, and now they can walk into the ladies’ without the dress, pretending to be trans men 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

They didn’t need a dress to say they were a trans woman anyway. You haven’t followed this closely have you? Plus, it’s really, really not all about toilets. What about rape crisis centres, women's shelters, women’s prisons, etc etc.? That’s where the judgement is really important.

This makes me sad - do we really want transwomen to have to use men's toilets, and transmen to have to use women's toilets? This will put transwomen at risk - I hate the hysteria that has arisen over this issue.

They are men. Risk from who exactly?

Do you really think men are never at risk of violence from other men??!

They are transwomen. You can advocate for what you think is right for women, without sneering down your nose at other people.

This also means trans men have to use the women’s toilets.. I’m sure if we wait a few months there’ll be plenty of threads complaining about beardy men in the ladies because they were born with a uterus.

"This also means trans men have to use the women’s toilets..."

Correct. But how many threads there will be about this I don't know. The numbers of women that have undergone transition and appear genuinely male are very small indeed.

Indeed that is where it matters but that’s not what you hear about is it it’s all toilets this and toilets that.

The last 3 restaurants I went to all had a unisex toilet anyway. Ffs.

FetchezLaVache · 22/04/2025 13:49

@Indianajet genuine question. Is it just public loos you feel sad your TW friends are excluded from, or do you think they should also be allowed to use, say, women's communal changing facilities at the gym?

As others have said, your anger should be directed at the people who have repeatedly lied to your friends and made believe they are literal women with a right to access women's spaces. The people who vilified, threatened and attacked anyone who dared to disagree, even when things like this happened: Transgender sex offender who attacked child in Morrisons toilet locked up in male prison - Daily Record

Trans sex offender who attacked child in shop toilet locked up in male prison

Katie Dolatowski was convicted of sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl in Kirkcaldy in 2018 as well as violent assaults on adults. She went against court orders to stay at her bail address at night.

Oh dear it makes you sad does it? Boo hoo.

i feel sad for the women who feel too intimidated to use single sex spaces that are rightfully theirs, the women who have had to leave rape support groups as there’s males there and for the women who’ve had places and prizes taken in sport.

Wake up.

These people aren’t Hayley Cropper. They’re bloody Eddie Izzard dressing in a mini skirt.

And trans men can use the men’s if they want. They’re no threat to men

Indianajet · 22/04/2025 13:21

I am obviously a lone voice here, however I just want to make the point not all women agree with the ruling - I am a woman, by the way in case you wondered. I have friends I care about who will be affected by this, and it makes me sad - and worried for them.

What is it, specifically, that you are worried about? Presumably it's male violence?

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 22/04/2025 13:50

Mumble12 · 22/04/2025 13:46

I completely agree with you. But it seems we're on totally the wrong platform if you want to express concern for another group of people.

Do something about it then, nobody's stopping you. Lobby your MP for transwomen to have a safe toilet to use. Women's toilets aren't available for them. Transmen are welcome.

Why is it an accepted stance that transwoman should use women's facilities (not just toilets) because men will be violent and transwomen need protecting from them? No - that is a men problem, not one that women need to budge up for or resolve.

Start lobbying for men to stop being violent and I will join you.

WallaceinAnderland · 22/04/2025 13:50

Who are all these people who cannot discern a person's sex just by looking at them?

In person, people who are transgender are usually very obvious. My son has a female best friend. She has transitioned, has a beard, wears clothes bought from the boys section and yet is still very obviously female. She doesn't even look like a short man. She looks like a woman with a fake beard. Which let's face it, is entirely what she is.

Likewise men who think they pass. They don't. Not even 'well known' transwomen in the public eye. You can see how they stoop when standing for photos, etc. trying to make themselves look smaller. Their gait is visibly male. This can't be changed.

It's time to stop pretending that people can't tell and just accept that some people like to present as the opposite sex and that's fine for them but it doesn't change their sex and they are not above the law.

I can still remember the days (all of a week ago) when we were told "men can attack women anyway" whenever concerns were raised about males in female spaces.

ghostyslovesheets · 22/04/2025 13:52

@Mumble12 can you explain why men’s fear of violence trumps women’s?

Transmen are welcome in women's toilets, they are biological women.

Youmeanyouvelostyourkey · 22/04/2025 13:53

Everyone has the right to feel safe, men, women, trans women and trans men. I would worry just as much about a trans woman and a trans man using the toilets of their biological sex due to the bigotry and hatred shown to them. Perhaps individual cubicles with no gender assigned is the way to go.

No one here is a winner.
Our complete lack of humanity in society at the moment is disgraceful.

I fear for all the trans women, non conforming women, and androgynous presenting people in society today.

Yes, women being recognised as a sex class seperate from men, is so awful 😪

I wonder where all these transwomen were, fighting for their right to be seen as real women back in 1974, before women even had the legal right to a bank account (which wasn't granted until 75), funny how they've waited until we've got all our rights before claiming we dont exist as a biological reality.

This “we’re the caring nice ones” is such hogwash. Where is your empathy for the AS people being effectively neutered? Where is your empathy for gay people being “transed” out of existence? Where is your empathy for the rape victims and religious people and elderly who want same-sex services? You have no answer to them.

I was told off recently on a first aid course for role playing a 999 call and identifying the patient as a woman as I might be misgendering the 60 year old unconscious person with breasts called Jen that I had spent the morning working with.

The trainer was a young man (he gave us his pronouns at the start) in his early 20s.

Hopefully this bollocks (male) will stop soon.

I hardly think misgendering an unconscious patient is the worst thing that's happening to them right now, maybe try keeping the airway open first and worry about their gender later. Fuck me, what a mess.

And have men accost you while hand washing, interfering with the sanitary product machine/bins (like the nappy fiend) and pissing on the toilet seat? No thanks

Who decides if a trans man passes?

And what do you understand by 'passes'.

What about cisgender women who someone considers to look sufificently masculine to be challenged? Who decides if she gets to use the women's bathroom? What proof will she be required to produce to prove that she is a woman?

No. Single sex spaces is the way to go. The only place I use a unisex bathroom is starbucks and soho house. Different customers but the unisex toilets are grim in both.

This is absolutely absurd although just as absurd is professionals being made to ask men if they could be pregnant. I hope the ruling also puts an end to this behaviour.
