Silliest place you’ve seen a dog owner take their dog

To ask where the silliest / most inappropriate place you’ve seen a dog taken by the owner

Inspired by recent posts complaining about dogs being everywhere in cafes etc

Yesterday in our local Cathedral Easter service , a dog was taken up to the altar for communion with its owners. I’ve seen it all now 😃
I was unfortunately unable to see if they attempted to snaffle a bit of bread for the dog , but it honestly wouldn’t have surprised me
Just why ?

i was intently watching a man with a dog going up the escalator at the tube station, he wasn't carrying his dog and i was so nervous as the dog came off the escalator, i asked the man and he said the dog was used to it

Karaoke night at the pub. Now the pub is VERY dog friendly. So no problem with dogs in the pub. But karaoke night? It's bad enough we inflict it on the humans, but we could at least spare the dogs from off key Coldplay.

IHeartHalloumi · 21/04/2025 09:07

I don't mind dogs but I feel sorry for people with a phobia or an allergy - and puzzled as to why dog ownership is so high when there's a cost of living crisis and climate crisis out there.
Also clearly a lot of people really aren't bothered by puppy farms as they keep buying puppies. I know not all dogs and yours is a rescue but so many people do buy puppies or horribly inbred brachycephalic dogs.
It's quite depressing.

Fat Face has always been dog friendly - our local one keeps biscuits by the counter and the workers always make a beeline for anyone with a dog!

Ooo thanks for the tip. My husband loves Fatface.

Sisuu · 21/04/2025 09:09

I love seeing dogs everywhere. On the caveat they are well behaved (ie. Have good owners).

Good dogs, are angels on earth afaic. Much (much) superior to lots of people.

Our fatface is in the shopping centre so definitely no.dogs, I did find corwall really dog friendly which I really don't mind, I've a feeling this thread wasn't started with best intentions though.

we have had dogs at family funerals, it was lovely to see the dog there.

Saw someone put their dog in the trolley at b&q yesterday, on a blanket, the staff turned a blind eye…I’m not sure that was an issue tbh, no food involved.

but a dog at a fireworks display I thought was madness.

we took our dog into a cute little old church yesterday, we were just going past on a walk and they were having an Easter open day with people to explain the history of it. I said, oh we can’t because of the dog, and they said, oh you can we’ve got dog treats. Popped in and left a donation after an interesting talk….they know their market.

I'm around a lot of fireworks through work. A lot of dogs are genuinely unbothered by them. Having spoken to some owners at displays, they explained if their dog can see what's making the noise and that nobody else is worried, they are perfectly calm.

SpamhappyTootsie · 21/04/2025 09:12

I have to say dogs in Durham Cathedral was a bit strange and not entirely sure I agree with it. It’s probably to boost tourism, as you’re funnelled through the ‘voluntary donation’ section from the main entrance. We always took turns to go in and the other sit outside with the dog. When I went in Feb there were only a couple of dogs there and they were impeccably behaved. Mine would be too. But still…… I didn’t think it was the place for dogs, and I’m someone who happily takes my dog anywhere she is allowed, within reason. Would never take her in a shop, apart from the animal feed shop we get her food from as they positively encourage their canine customers to come in and say Hello.

Yes! Same with Waterstones, they always have a bowl of water and treats handy, make a big fuss of the dogs 💓

Rohan, Blacks and most "outdoorsy" type shops will welcome dogs.

I’ve taken our dog to a fireworks display. They aren’t at all bothered by fireworks so why not? It’s outside in a park.

Anyotherdude · 21/04/2025 09:14

Oh that’s easy! Fenton - the un-recall-able dog in Richmond Park chasing deer!

We have a sighthound, and live near both Richmond and Bushy parks (they both have herds of deer). Because of this, we haven’t visited either park in the time we’ve had our DDog, as IMO it would be cruel to “taunt” her with the prey that she has been bred to chase. So we stick to the paths and woods mainly, and she is only let off-lead if we are in an enclosed field to do her zoomies (and then only after she has done her business first).

MyFavouriteSpoon · 21/04/2025 09:14

There was someone carrying their dog in a bag at the Edinburgh museum science festival event last week. It was so busy, hot and noisy, totally not a fun place for a dog to be. I love dogs but this annoys me because the science festival is an event for children and many children are frightened of or allergic to dogs including my son who then was uncomfortable and not wanting to join in. There was no need for the dog to be there, no benefit at all to the dog. It's pure selfishness of the owner.

Mmmcheese89 · 21/04/2025 09:14

Not sure what some of you would make of my rabbits in a pram in home bargains. It's not often. But it's on the way back from the vets so I occasionally pop in on the way home to grab a bag of nuggets/treats if they've not kicked the vet in the face.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 21/04/2025 09:15

I'm not anti-dog I'm anti irresponsible dog owners who believe their dog is akin to a child and therefore must go everywhere the owner goes.

Dogs are unhygienic, smelly animals (I still feel sick every time I remember my friends dog furiously slurping at its bollocks and my friend joking "oh, he has a yeast build up and likes the taste", and then letting said dog lick his face after 🤢) and most dog species were originally working animals, and we should keep that separation of "people spaces" and "animal friendly spaces".

You don't see cat owners taking their cats everywhere, but dog owners seem to think they don't have to be reasonable.

Dogs are animals, not children.

John Lewis and Marks and Spencer’s. It drives me mad seeing dogs in department stores that are not service dogs (I’m saying this as someone with 2 large dogs).

John Lewis are a dog friendly shop though, so if you don't like it don't go.

Peripeteia · 21/04/2025 09:16

I don’t think this thread is anti dog at all (or the one the other day about dogs in cafes). I adore dogs and have had them all my life. I used to be delighted to find a dog-friendly cafe or pub where I could sit with them after a walk but since lockdown and the rise in dog-ownership, there is also a rise in the level of entitlement of some thinking they should be able to take their dogs everywhere.

Most places including shops, restaurants, attractions etc have always limited entry to service-dogs only for many sensible reasons - hygiene, allergies, comfort of everyone etc.

These rules are now being disregarded by some (not all) incompetent and selfish dog owners. I saw a dog sitting at a cafe table the other day licking crumbs off it. That is disgusting by anyone’s standards and how any dog owner can think that’s acceptable I don’t know.

It’s just about common courtesy to others and considering carefully what’s appropriate and also fair to the dog.

IveGotAnUnusuallyLargePelvisISwear · 21/04/2025 09:17

I work in a convenience store and the amount of dog owners who are shocked we don’t want their dog walking around our shop, at nose/slobber height with our food displays. “We can’t leave it outside someone might steal it!” Erm… why don’t one of you stay outside with it while the other shops then? Apparently hasn’t occurred to them.

I don't know about silliest but I was in an M & S food shop on Saturday- it was one off because I never usually buy M & S food - and there was a woman shopping there with a dog in her trolley. It was a small dog lying on a blanket . I stress it was not a guide dog or hearing assistance dog.

I was actually disgusted.

Since when were people allowed to disregard hygiene laws in this manner?
And the staff can't have failed to see this dog.

I couple of weeks back in my local M&S food hall too. I wouldn't have dreamed of taking a non working dog in there! I was disgusted and I'm a dog owner myself. As an ex retail worker who has had to clean up all sorts of spillages I wonder if dog wee or worse is something shop workers find these days???

Cherrycola4 · 21/04/2025 09:18

Sat next to a dog on a long packed bus journey to the seaside, it was a boiling hot day, the dog had travel sickness.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 21/04/2025 09:18

DontJumpInTheFountain · 21/04/2025 08:41

I disagree. Whether it's appropriate for a dog to be there or not is not determined by whether the owners have someone to dogsit.

I didn’t say that. I said in a roundabout way that there may have been a reason why. Most parents want to take their kids to open days and sometimes things don’t go to plan, and it is better to take the dog than leave it for a long period of time. Or maybe your life always runs perfectly?!
