Silliest place you’ve seen a dog owner take their dog

To ask where the silliest / most inappropriate place you’ve seen a dog taken by the owner

Inspired by recent posts complaining about dogs being everywhere in cafes etc

Yesterday in our local Cathedral Easter service , a dog was taken up to the altar for communion with its owners. I’ve seen it all now 😃
I was unfortunately unable to see if they attempted to snaffle a bit of bread for the dog , but it honestly wouldn’t have surprised me
Just why ?

I didn’t say that, though, did I?

I will take my dog anywhere I want to where he is permitted. I don’t take him places that aren’t dog friendly, I don’t let him off lead when he’s not allowed to be.

But I don’t care about strangers who pull faces or grab their kids in horror as he runs past them (rare - most of the time I’m having to step between kids and him as they try to touch him - he won’t harm them but I think it’s important kids learn they can’t touch random dogs without asking).

I don’t care about random people’s wish my dog be elsewhere - why would I?

If they don’t want to be in proximity to dogs, they should go somewhere dog free.

I’d turn it around and say anyone demanding the removal or modified behaviour of dogs in a space they are welcome in, is massively selfish.

I frequently try and go to a ‘dog free’ stretch of beach and guess what is always there? Dogs. The fault is obviously partly with the council for not enforcing the fines but mostly it’s with the unbelievably selfish twats who think the clearly signed rules don’t apply to them because they have dogs and think that trumps all else.

Missohnoyoubetterdont · 24/04/2025 08:04

Dog pissed in a vintage clothes shop while we were on holiday last week and the owners just left without saying anything. Was telling a friend who works at outdoor clothing company and she says it happens all the time, but often poop on the shop floor. Dogs don’t belong in shops. Leave them at home.

My autistic son would have been bloody terrified

It’s also bloody repulsive to take a dog into a cubicle

Ok, and? I don’t think it’s a surprise to anyone that there are selfish humans in all walks of life.

There’s a park near me that is dogs on leads and I have tried to gently remind dog owners who ignore it - and had a mouthful from several of them. I don’t make the mistake of now thinking all dog owners are twats.

There are very few examples on this thread of dogs being taken places they aren’t allowed - but so many people who don’t like dogs wanting their desires to be held in higher regard. Another example of selfish people in all walks of life.

Yeah, now that cubicle isn’t sterile anymore, ffs.

Your user name suggests you like cats. I spent part of Sunday digging cat shit out of my vegetable planter. Doesn’t mean I want all cats banned, however gross it was.

On a stadium concert film I saw someone had a chihuahua with them. Right against the barriers too so she wasn't getting out of that crowd quickly. Least the poor thing had ear defenders on.

No, all dog owners aren’t selfish but there seems to be a higher proportion of selfishness among dog owners than in other walks of life. This is the problem. There is literally nowhere that should reasonably be dog free or anywhere that actually is legally supposed to be dog free that in actuality is dog free. Or dog poo free for that matter. I don’t particularly like dogs but I’m not selfish so I don’t turn up to woods or fields in the countryside and expect them to be on leads because they are reasonable places for dogs to be. I would also never ever blame the dog, either, because despite what some owners think, they are animals, not people and so cannot be held to the same expectations as people. I don’t know why there are more selfish dog owners than there used to be (or maybe why a higher proportion of selfish people are dog owners) but no other group invades other people’s space, threatens their safety or leaves areas filthy as much as dog owners do and do it not just with disregard for others but with a blatant two fingers up attitude. These are not a minority or if they are, they’re a sizeable one. Good dog owners shouldn’t be attacking non dog owners for having the temerity to object but should also be objecting just as loudly until they start to behave decently.

Dumbdog · 24/04/2025 10:21

Absolute nonsense.

There are plenty of shit people in all walks of life. Drivers, cyclists, dog owners, cat owners, parents, child free by choice.

You just have confirmation bias.

And as I’ve already said, I have reminded dog owners that their pup should be on a leash and asked them to leave playgrounds.

Plenty on this thread have said how awful it is some lazy fuckers don’t pick up the poo or hang it in a tree.

But we’re not responsible for all dog owners anymore than you are, and wasting time on selfish pricks who don’t take their responsibilities seriously is a fool’s errand.

I prefer to waste my time pointing out that someone else’s desire to have a dog free existence is not my issue to solve.

Don’t like dogs? Stay away from dogs. Dogs where they shouldn’t be? Report them or ask them to leave.

At least my dog doesn’t come and shit in your carrots.

TessTimoney · 24/04/2025 12:01

Not anti-dog but anti bad dog owners! They assume everyone must love their dog and allow their animals to wander round cafes and sniff at people and their food - extremely off putting. Speaking as an animal lover.

Did you actually read the article? If it's the one I've linked to here then it seems that you have really misunderstood the study it references... it says nothing about "people incapable of forming human relationships use dogs as a substitute"

"The study suggests owners rate their relationship with their dogs as being as satisfying or more satisfying than their closest human relationships. However, the researchers did not find the owner-dog bond was stronger in people with weaker human relationships.

Our results showed that it [the bond] does not replace human relationships but offers something different, a unique combination of characteristics to complement what we receive from the human side of our social network,” said Borbála Turcsán, first author of the study from Eötvös Loránd University in Hungary."

"Dogs are for people who can't form proper relationships with other humans" is on my bingo card. I am glad you posted what that article is actually about.

I am fed up being told I have a dog because I can't form proper relations with humans. I have ASD, so struggle with other people anyway. My dog is not a replacement for any human relationship.

Personally, I would like to see a cat hating thread. I don't hate cats, I used to have some. But I bet half the vitriolic comments on MN you see about dogs would not dared be said about cats.

I wouldn't be so sure of that. A lot of people dislike cats. But perhaps they don't encounter cats day-to-day in the same way as they do dogs. Dislike of cats will mainly be linked to them pooing in other people's gardens and killing wildlife. Or perhaps you're also showing a bit of confirmation bias, a bit like the people who see one vaguely negative comment on MN and go "waah waah, everyone here hates dogs!". Whereas in reality lots of people (both on here and IRL) love dogs, lots of (most?) people like them just fine but dislike bad dog owners, and a small minority really dislike them. But no one is stopping you starting a thread 🤷‍♀️

Bollocks. Have you been on MN long? Hundreds of cat hating threads. And dog threads that turn in to cat threads. 😂

Like this! A lighthearted thread derailed by dog-obsessives and inevitably the sneers about cats and children.

I hate dogs in cafes. There is nothing worse than sitting down having a coffee and a bite to eat and find someone’s dog sniffing around your table. There are so many selfish dog owners who appear not to understand that many people not only don’t share their love of their dog but actively detest them.

I honestly don’t understand how anyone can ‘actively detest’ a dog 😞

BeVividFox · 26/04/2025 18:46

I live in Munich. My gynae has one in her practice. It has its own room across the corridor from her, barricaded by a baby gate.

Fair enough. They key is to be an adult about it and just move on with your life when you see dogs. I see stuff I hate all the time, and I just get on with my day.
