Silliest place you’ve seen a dog owner take their dog

To ask where the silliest / most inappropriate place you’ve seen a dog taken by the owner

Inspired by recent posts complaining about dogs being everywhere in cafes etc

Yesterday in our local Cathedral Easter service , a dog was taken up to the altar for communion with its owners. I’ve seen it all now 😃
I was unfortunately unable to see if they attempted to snaffle a bit of bread for the dog , but it honestly wouldn’t have surprised me
Just why ?

Thats not a new thing. Mumsnet is famously anti dog, so much so that it makes me surprised to see people like my dogs when they’re out and about.

People are anti badly trained dogs and owners.

Worst I've seen is taking them on the school run despite being asked not to. And then tying a distressed dog up outside the gates.

Why is mumsnet suddenly anti dog?

I'm not anti dog but there are just some places dogs don't need to be. DH is allergic - he appreciates that where guide dogs are concerned he needs to deal with it; but he shouldn't have to where people just want to bring their dogs ie busy city centre restaurants and shopping centres.

In that last scenario it can't be fun for the dogs either.

There’s a huge anti dog sentiment on mumsnet. Honestly some posters froth at the mouth about the mere existence of dogs. Can be quite entertaining to see how unnecessarily irate they can get.

It's nice that they treat us to standard dog owner baiting thread from time to time. Saves us doing a welfare check.

myplace · 21/04/2025 08:28

Pet services are lovely.

I was irritated by a friend being outraged when she wasn’t allowed to take her dog in a church/cathedral, though. It’s great when you can, but the dog owner shouldn’t be the one deciding 😅

I had to explain that at a local dog friendly cafe they’d had to ask people not to sit their dogs up at the table, and not to let their dog lick the plates. She was horrified and began to understand why there are boundaries…!

A friend takes his dog to a specific annual
church service, due to the timing. Sits at the back. But people with allergies then struggle to be there, too.

legsekeven · 21/04/2025 08:28

I went to a military festival Last year, very hot sunny day with cannons and other explosions happening regularly throughout the day. I could not think of a more stressful environment for a dog but there were loads there. Really thoughtless owners

Conistonhawks · 21/04/2025 08:30

Smuggled into hospital in a bag and then went crazy running through the ward. Ended up cocking it leg up on the resuscitation trolley 😡😡
incidentally it was not brought in to see its owner- the women apparently could not do without her dog with her. She was banned from coming back both by the staff and the women she came to visit.

i was both entertained and disgusted as the patient in the bed opposite.

also I see so many dogs off leads on our local nature reserve with signs saying nesting birds it makes me so angry. We had a swan attacked last year that had to be put down. It was one of a pair that had produce loads of cygnets year after year. The remaining female swan was bereft

Why is mumsnet suddenly anti dog?

Most are anti badly trained dog with no recall in unsuitable places.

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 21/04/2025 08:30

Well it’s probably like the ‘MN is anti-trans!’ when really no one is anti trans, they just want to keep certain spaces and sports biological male free.

Same as dogs. Some people deem MN anti-dog when really most people don’t mind dogs, they just don’t want them in spaces where they probably shouldn’t be, especially when they haven’t been trained properly.

As evidenced already on this thread.

Creepybookworm · 21/04/2025 08:31

The library. It was huge and scary looking and dogs are not allowed apart from service dogs. He claimed this is what it was. He then started a row with another library user which led to lots of aggression on his part. So he was asked to leave (man and potential weapon-dog).

University open days.

I can understand this one. If you have to travel a long way to a uni, and there is no one to leave your family dog with for a lengthy period of time, then it makes sense.

I think the issue is that their are so many bad dog owners and increasingly since Covid and so much batshit stuff that owners do with their dogs that lots of people are here are going to post about it

Santasbigredbobblehat · 21/04/2025 08:34

I’m not anti dog, I’m just not interested in dogs. Also, there are more than ever and some of them aren’t well trained. The area I moved into ten years ago, there were hardly any dogs, now there’s loads. Dog shit in the parks, dogs in the cafes yapping and their simpering gen x owners who look hurt when you don’t stroke/ask about their inevitable cockerpoo.

rockingbird · 21/04/2025 08:39

I see countless dogs being turned away at the entrance of this weekends local food festival-absolutely heaving with people! Who in the right mind takes a dog to a food festival 🤷🏼‍♀️ temptation at every stand and barely any room to walk.. yeah let’s take the dog along.

I disagree. Whether it's appropriate for a dog to be there or not is not determined by whether the owners have someone to dogsit.

Tbrh · 21/04/2025 08:41

Library, at Children's storytime. They were told to leave 😆

Napface · 21/04/2025 08:42

I work in a supermarket. A lady asked if she could bring her puppy in, I said "no sorry, it's not allowed". She brought it in anyway and looked at me like 😠 the entire time she was in the shop. Such dirty looks it was almost comical. Why even ask if you're just going to do it anyway.

HelenWheels · 21/04/2025 08:42

JSMill · 21/04/2025 08:42

I saw a dog off the lead in Zara in Edinburgh.

it doesnt make sense at all
you arrange for someone to have your dog or at least walk your dog

Alltheprettyseahorses · 21/04/2025 08:44

Fairgrounds. Just why?! All the noise, movement and people must be so upsetting for the dogs, it's cruel imo. Any large event really.

Another one - I went on a ghost walk the other month and the email confirmation clearly says strictly no dogs except assistance dogs yet one group still turned up with their pet.

You can organise for your pet to be brought into hospital but obviously there’s a protocol and it shouldn’t be smuggled in! We have therapy animals visiting wards too, but it’s well organised.

You might not be but unfortunately many are. You can be pro womens rights without vilifying trans people - which is what many are doing

I haven’t seen that on here though. Which is what the op referred to

Not everybody though. Most people are pro women’s rights, and a few are anti trans. So let’s try to avoid sweeping generalisations on both sides as otherwise you can’t have dialogue and we’ve all seen where that leads. Besides, this is a dog thread.

HelenWheels · 21/04/2025 08:46

i am not anti dogs but people should arrange to leave them at home sometimes
