Silliest place you’ve seen a dog owner take their dog

To ask where the silliest / most inappropriate place you’ve seen a dog taken by the owner

Inspired by recent posts complaining about dogs being everywhere in cafes etc

Yesterday in our local Cathedral Easter service , a dog was taken up to the altar for communion with its owners. I’ve seen it all now 😃
I was unfortunately unable to see if they attempted to snaffle a bit of bread for the dog , but it honestly wouldn’t have surprised me
Just why ?

I took mine for a hike up a mountain, he was really annoying kept pulling at the lead and barking at sheep. Next time I'll leave him in the car

Our solicitors let us bring ours in the sign our wills! He was a brand new rescue at the time and didn't handle been left alone so we were going to wait outside in turn but they said bring him in and made a huge fuss of him. When the solicitor reads out the bit about who gets the dog if we both die in a fireball he even looked at DDog as of to check he was okay with it.

I love when people do things like this!

i am taking my dog on the tube soon,
needs must

i have seen dogs on the tube

Of course dogs are allowed on the Tube, otherwise it wouldn’t say “dogs must be carried” on the escalators, would it? Just keep the dog under control and avoid rush hour (it could get stepped on and anyway if it hasn’t bought a ticket, it could be taking up space. Londoners are brutal about space wasters).

Service dogs are essential for many people to live their lives.

Or are you suggesting that people with medical needs or disabilities shouldn't be allowed to attend places like Disneyworld?

No, pp is rightly suggesting no dogs should be outside in 33c heat.

Charlize43 · 21/04/2025 08:58

I was at a wedding last summer where the groom's ex girlfriend (also a school friend of the bride) brought her border collie decked out with a garland of silk flowers around its neck. It was quite a boisterous dog and it seemed to me the way she kept dragging it around during the reception to meet people and the fact that she unleashed it during the vows so it could roam around the church, struck me as an act of deliberate passive aggression. It was later running around the dance floor during the reception and looked like it was trying to join in. There were quite a few disapproving looks as well.

I remember think at the time how ridiculous it was to allow a dog at a wedding, but also that it would make terrific TV comedy - maybe something for Diane Morgan in Mandy.

Napface · 21/04/2025 08:56

People in real life aren't going to approach you to tell you they don't like dogs though are they? That would be wierd. They are probably thinking it though.

If they're MN-ers, they'd soon show me they were anti-dog by screaming in fear, no doubt Wink

Transatlantic First Class cabin.

Hohofortherobbers · 21/04/2025 08:59

To a serial killer exhibition in London Waterloo. It was under everyone's feet in the crowd and jumping up at people, definitely not a service dog despite the amazon bought lead that stated it was

Someone I know said she was allowed to have her dog next to her on a flight back from the US as it was her ‘support dog’. I’m not sure that could’ve been true.

This is true. See them quite often.

No, pp is rightly suggesting no dogs should be outside in 33c heat.

So blind people, or deaf people, or people with diabetes or heart conditions should just stay indoors all summer? What about in countries where it never drops below 33 degrees for months on end?

Don't be daft. Dogs are fine in 33 degree heat as long as they're appropriately acclimatised to it.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 21/04/2025 09:00

My former neighbours, wh I had never ever seen walk their poor dog in 15 years of sharing a courtyard with them, decided in their wisdom to walk the dog on bonfire night. 🙈

Soundsfamiliardoesntit · 21/04/2025 08:20

Oh my goodness!
I wouldn't be happy about that at all.

Every day I hear something else that adds to this feeling the world is spiralling into a crazy place I don't understand at all.

Why is this any issue for you at all? Trolleys aren’t expected to be sparkling clean.

Soddingcat · 21/04/2025 09:00

I saw a pug in a baby (dog) carrier in Venice a few weeks ago with all legs sticking outwards that looked ludicrous ! Ans a pomeranian in a pram ! Very funny !

I was in a public toilet of a country house the other day and there was a woman in there with her Labrador, standing under the dryers.
I could only surmise that she was on her own and didn’t want to leave the dog on its own outside, but came out into the cafe courtyard to find her sat at a table with another woman and two more dogs.

Sunshineofyourlove · 21/04/2025 09:01

I was walking on a path above a huge waterfall, which roars over almost vertical cliffs down to a seething pool below. It is pretty scary, and was the inspiration for a novel in which a man goes over and into the water, while attempting to save a dog which had slipped onto a ledge. In my real-life version, there was a couple up there throwing a ball for their spaniel.

On another occasion I saw a family up there, playing a blindfold game with a child who clearly had Down Syndrome.

Weird place.

faerietales · 21/04/2025 09:01

Sammysquiz · 21/04/2025 08:56

But in real-life you don’t know what people are thinking. So when you’re in a cafe with your dog, unless somebody actually speaks up, you’ve got no idea if everyone else is thinking ‘I wish that dog wasn’t in here’.

I love dogs but I do think the number of thoughtless owners has increased.

I'm not talking about people thinking it, though.

I'm talking about the reactions some MN-ers report to have whenever they see a dog walk past them in the park. I've never seen a single person behave the way these people claim to behave, lol.

There’s a huge anti dog sentiment on mumsnet. Honestly some posters froth at the mouth about the mere existence of dogs. Can be quite entertaining to see how unnecessarily irate they can get.

😂

MinnieMountain · 21/04/2025 09:02

DS and I “met” a dog on the tube once- DS loves dachshunds and the woman was taking it with her to a funeral as she was looking after it whilst her son on holiday. It was very sweet and I didn’t think either thing was odd.

Dogs in cafes are unhygienic and frequently irritating.

SnoozingFox · 21/04/2025 09:02

LuvACustardCream · 21/04/2025 08:18

Why is mumsnet suddenly anti dog?

There have been threads like this for a while, roughly coinciding with the boom in irresponsible pet ownership during the pandemic. There are thousands of us who don't give two hoots about "fur babies" and would prefer not to be around dogs in places where dogs never used to be taken. Who think the owners dragging their dog around John Lewis or to communion at the cathedral should have trained their animal better to be able to be left at home. And who are sick to the back teeth of the expectation that everyone loves their animals and doesn't bother when their space is invaded by a dog or they are jumped up at.

There are also many, many people who are allergic to dogs or afraid of them.

Moobootoyoutoo · 21/04/2025 09:03

People can self declare their dogs as assistance dogs now and in doing so shops would be discriminating by not allowing them in, even in supermarkets, if the dog isn't controlled then you can ask them to leave but that is often a contentious point in itself - blame the legislation behind it all - not the shops!! The wording is deliberately written so as to discourage but pointedly doesn't permit them to be banned

Yet there are multiple people on here blaming the shops, again

Coffeeishot · 21/04/2025 08:55

Dog coming out of a changing room of a Fatface in Cornwall! It didn't bother me just surprised me,

Fat Face has always been dog friendly - our local one keeps biscuits by the counter and the workers always make a beeline for anyone with a dog!

LuvACustardCream · 21/04/2025 08:18

Why is mumsnet suddenly anti dog?

I don't think it is anti dog, but I think the fetishisation of dogs now has gone too far. I also think that this thread will attract people who don't like dogs.

I like dogs. I grew up with them, but I really don't think it is necessary to take dogs with you everywhere you go. They are animals, not people. So many dog owners anthropomorphize their dogs now. It is getting ridiculous.

I am also very much aware that there are people who are allergic to dogs, and allowing them absolutely everywhere means that people with dog allergies have fewer safe places to visit.

BoredZelda · 21/04/2025 09:05

Alltheprettyseahorses · 21/04/2025 08:44

Fairgrounds. Just why?! All the noise, movement and people must be so upsetting for the dogs, it's cruel imo. Any large event really.

Another one - I went on a ghost walk the other month and the email confirmation clearly says strictly no dogs except assistance dogs yet one group still turned up with their pet.

Not all dogs are scared of noise. Mine doesn’t bother at all. Same with fireworks, mine doesn’t bat an eye. We made sure she was properly exposed to things when she was a puppy.

ClairDeLaLune · 21/04/2025 09:06

Former colleague had his dog as best man and ring bearer at his wedding. Dressed up in a doggie suit. I don’t actually like dogs personally but even I thought it was quite cute.

Makes a change from it being anti trans 🤷‍♀️

I’ve never seen any ‘anti trans’ (isn’t the word du jour ‘transphobic’?) people on MN.

Seen lots of pro women people though.

Who knew?
